Description

J. TAYLOR.
TRUCK.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT 16, 1012.
Patented Dec. 24, 1912.
WITNESSES 3 INVENTOR JOHN TAYLOR, F COLONIE, NEW YORK.
TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 16, 1912. Serial No. 720,610.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TAYLOR, of
Colonic, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Trucks; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
on their upper ends.
and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
.This invention is a novel improvement in 'trucks for railway cars and particularly relates to the means for suspending the spring planks or bolsters of such truck.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the hanger-supports and hangers by which .the spring plank or bolster are suspended upon the truck frame, and is particularly designed for use with the form of trucks shown in my Patents Nos. 674,224 and 674,225, datedMay 14, 1901, but it is also adapted for use with the variety of trucks of other constructions and for use wherestrong swinging suspension devices are needed.
In the ordinary construction of car trucks the spring planks and bolsters have been suspended from the truck frames by means of pairs of links, or by means of U-shaped hangers, which latter are usually suspended from the hanger-supports by means of nuts In the practical use of such U-shaped hangers considerable dif- ,ficulty has been experienced as the jarring of the truck caused by the Wheels running over rough joints, switches and crossings, tends to crystallize the hangers and cause them to break at the threaded portion; and where the U-shaped hangers are suspended 402 from the supports by passing through openings therein, the supports are apt to fill up with mud and slush and obstruct the free swinging motion of the hanger, which is necessary when the truck is rounding curves, and this produces severe strains upon the hangers at their points of suspen- 'sion from the hanger supports, and has frequently caused breakage of the hangers and resultant loss and damage.
In my present invention all such difficulties are overcome and avoided by reason of the novel construction of the hanger-support and hanger.
The invention in brief comprises a U-shaped hanger support which is adapted tobe secured to and preferably between the top sidebars of the truck frame and to support a rectangular link hanger freely. suspended from such support and preferably formed of one continuous piece; and when properly engaged withsucb', a hanger-sup- Patented Dec. 24,1912;
port is free to swing laterally and it is" improtection is desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a car truck equipped with my invention, one of the top side bars of the frame being broken away. to show the attached hanger support more clearly. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical section on line 22, Fig'.
'1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3,
of Fig. 2.
In the cent pedestals of the side frame f the truck which may be connected at the top by parallel side bars B, and at the bottom by a which is itself suspended from the bars B,
intermediate the Wheels of the truck, by suitable. hangers.
The parts thus far'described may be constructed substantially as shown and de-' scribed in my Patent #674,224 above referred to; but may be of any other suitable construction.
Between the to bars B of eachside frame, and at a point intermediate the wheels of the truck, and adjacent the ends of the tie- .bars H, is secured one of my novel han er supports 1; such hanger-support is pre orably U-shaped in'cross section and s of a width to fit closely between and against the inner sides of the adjacent bars B; and' xthis hanger-support is provided at its upperdges with lips 1" which are adapted to project over and rest upon the upper edges of the bars 'B. The hanger supports are sedrawings, A, A, desi nate adja orted upon 'bolts 2fjwhich; pass ,thr'oug'lj corresponding openingin tli'e'bars B and the hanger as gether so as to make" the hanger solid or con are secured to and supported upon the lower 'out' of around steel rod, and is like a rechanger is confined in the hanger-support by ,can havethe necessary free longitudinal swing transversely of the truck.
" "theihafi'gers';thatthere is nothing to break is transmitted-f from the'hanger to '"thefliotto'm' of the'ha-nger-supportrand that. the} hanger has a' long broad bearing in the dinal yibf e. 't'i'ii ki g he pp cured to the bars B by means ofthrough shown, and may be secured by nuts 23 or other suitable means. A spacing member 3* is inserted in the hanger and preferably sup ported on the bolts'2, and said spacing member prevents distortion of the hangersupport when the bolts 2 are-tightened'to clamp the hanger-support securely in position,
Suspended from each hanger support is a link hanger 4; which is preferably forged tangu'lar frame in shape; the ends and sidesof'said hanger'being preferably forgedto tinuous, Gne endof' this hanger is placed in the U-shaped hanger-support 1 and it is lowered between the "bars B before the hanger-support is bolted in position; the
means of the b'olts'2 which, however, do not interfere with the free swinging movement of thelower part of the hanger.
As shown the endsof the spring plank O endsof the hangers 4, substantially as describedin-iny Patent #674,224 aforesaid; or inany' other suitable way so the spring plank It will be seen that in my invention it will beimpossible for any collection of dust or-fdirt' in the hanger support to interfere orobstruct the fr'ee swinging movement of about"v theanger unless the body", thereof gives way"; that -no pins or bolts are directly oonnected with the hanger and that all the haiiger supportand byreason of suchbear-f ingf the tendency of the spring plankl to sw ng or move laterally in a direction longior 'st arting off the carwill be overcome.
{The hanger-support might be forged like.
the or both may he made ofmalleable Mynovel hanger support and hanger are less expensive to manufacture I and more easily asse bled and mrneasdta theitr'uck frame, than th'e forms or hangers andhanger supports commonly employed in truck con- What I claim is i I 1. In combination with the parallel side bars ofa truck;a U-shaped hanger-support secured to and between said bars,- a' frame 160 shaped hanger hai'ing its upper member lying Within and extending longitudinally "through. said support and suspended there;
by from said support ported onsaid hanger. I p;
2. In combination with a truck frame having parallel side bars,"U-shaped hanger supports bolted to and between the said side bars; rectangulr link-shaped hangers hav and a member suping their upper members lying within and extending longitudinally through said sup-' ports and suspended therefrom; spacing members in said supports; a spring plank supported on said hangers; springs on the lank and a bolster mounted ont'he s aims; 7 5 P a o l D 3, The v combination with a truck frame having pairs of parallel bars at each side, of opposite hanger supports attached directly to and between the pairs of bars at the sides of said frame, a"framesliaped liangerfhay ing its upper member extendingacrossand resting Within each support andsuspended thereby fromsaid support, and a bolster carfried by saidhangersg 4, In combination witha truck frameh'av- .ing pairs of parallel side bars at' each side,
a U-shaped hanger support bolted 'to and between the sidebarsat each, side of said frame, a frame-shaped hanger having its upper member lying within and exten di'ng longitudinally through said support and Suspended thereby from said support, a
spacing member in said support above the hanger Inembenand a bolster carriedby; said hangers.
In testimony that LI claim the foregoing as my own, I aflix my, signature in presence of two witnesses.
