WATER-HEATER- Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whomit may concern:

Be it known that I, fin-1A1: P. Airs-us, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinWater- Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in water heaters as used for domestic purposes, and particularly to thatclass used in connection with kitchen boiler-tanks as commonly connected with cooking ranges. Its objects are to provide devices whereby the contents of such tanks may be raised in temperature by means auxiliary to the usual heat source or entirely independent thereof and without interference.

Another object is to provide such devices readily applicable to existing conditions and finally to provide such devices, which adequately fulfil their purposes at moderate expense.

These objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming part of these specifications and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plane view of the heater as applied to an ordinary kitchen tank and, Fig. 4 is a par tial front elevation of the same.

The invention consists of combining with an ordinary kitchen boiler-tank, a heating coil connected with the side outlet of the same at one end and at the other with a pipe leading directly to the tank. The heating coil as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is arranged by suitably bending a pipe, in such manner as to form a series of undulations disposed arallel to each other and which are subjeCtEd to the heat derived from gas burners of the Bunsen type suitably disposed below ters Patent 1s the coils and connected with a gas main in a common manner. A hood or casing is' attached to said tank by bands surrounding 2 the same, having a plate provided at the bottom and connected rigldly therewitlug similarly, a top covering is arranged suited i a pipe disposed within said heating chamdoors for the purpose of affording means for light-ing the gas jets of the heater below the coils and to clean the coils when re quired. Preferably these coils are made of a suitable size and gage of copper pipe and so placed thatthe lower end of the coil will connect with the side outlet of said tank, the upper end connecting with the hot water outlet on top of it. The interior of the casm is provided with a lining of asbestos or ot er non-conducting material secured on the same.

Referring to the drawings. 10 represents an upright kitchen boiler-tank supported on the ordinary stands (not shown). Inlet pipes 11 and 12 are connected on the top cover of the boiler-tank. The heating coils 1* are connected by a tee on the upper end to the inlet pipe 11 and the lower end of the coil to the outlet pipe 13. A gas pipe 15, leading from any convenient source, is provided with a plurality of burners 16 fastened below the heating coil. A hood or casing 16. preferably made of sheet metal with anornamented castcap 1'? is fastened over the heating coil and adapted to retain the heat close to the coils; the cap 17 is loosely disposed as a cover to the casing which is further provided with a base plate 18 secured thereto. The side walls 19 of the casing have holes 20 close to the boiler and a band or hoop '21 inserted through these holes this is bent around the boiler in a manner so that the ends of the band extend past each other and may be fastened together by screws or bolts 22. For lighting the gas and also to keep the coils clean a hinged door 23 provides means for access when required.

I am aware that water heaters provided with coils and gas burners are not in themselves new. but the arrangement. of parts as herein indicated are believed to be novel and an improvement over similar devices.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 1. In a water heating apparatus. the combination with the boiler tank, having means for water circulation, of a heating chamber having front and side walls, attached closely adjacent to one side of the said boiler tank,

2. In a water heating a paratus, the combination with a boiler ta of a water pipe formed with a. series of return bends said bends being disposed in parallel, closely against the tank, one over the other, and connected to said tank so that the inlet shall be substantially midway in the height of said tank, the outlet entering the tank discharge near its top, a row of burners arranged below said pipe, a casing for said pipe, open at the back to the tank and covermg the pipe and burners at the front and sides, said casing being closely adjacent to the pipes, a cover plate for said casing, a base plate for said casing and means combined with the casing for securing the same to the said tank.
