body of the cylinder being preferably made of cast iron as are also the heads thereof, the said body being provided with longitudinally disposed bores therethrough while the heads are provided with both longitudinally and radially disposed bores, said bores providing means foi-'permitting air to be circulated therein to cool the cylinder and heads.
A further object of the present invention is the provision 'of a piston cylinder, the body and heads of which are provided with longitudinal and radial bores, said body and head being preferably made of cast iron,
and having wrought iron tubes disposedl within the respective longitudinal and radial bores of the cylindrical body and heads to provide for the passage `of air and at the same time reinforce the structure and reimburse the cylinder and heads for the weakness due to the bores formedv therein.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details ofconstruction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through a complete piston cylinder made according to and embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 thereof. Fig. 3 Ais a section taken on line 3-3 thereof.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the cylindrical body of a piston cylinder which as shown is provided with a plurality of longitudinally disposed bores 2 drilled .or otherwise formed through the body thereof `and having mounted therein the wrought iron tubes 3 whose ends 4 and 4 project beyond the ends of the bores of the cylindrical body and enter the longitudinal bores a formed inthe respective heads 5 and 6 of the piston cylinder. The respective heads are provided with the radially disposed bores 9 in which snugly t the wrought' iron air conducting tubes 8 which open into the respective wrought iron tubes 3 at the pro: jecting ends 4 and 4 through the apertures 7 and 7 respectively. By this means it will be seen that thevair is permitted to circulate through the respective open ends of thel radial and longitudinal tubes and that the cylinder and heads are properly cooled to prevent the super-heating or burning out thereof. Where these bores are formed in cast iron cylinders, cast iron cylinders being the mostA economical, the walls thereof or portions adjacent to the bores are weakened to such extent that it is necessary to produce a compensating means or reinforcement at such point and for this purpose the wrought iron tubes 3 and 8 are e1nployed. The projecting ends 4 and 4 of the respective wrought iron tubes 3 will also act as a connecting means to hold the respective heads 5 and 6 relatively to the cylindrical body l of the cylinder.
What is claimed is:
l. A. piston cylinder, having a cylindrical body and a head disk at each end thereof, the walls of said cylindrical body being provided With a plurality of bores longitudinally thereof, said heads being provided with longitudinal bores to register with the longitudinal bores of the body and with a radial bore to each longitudinal bore thereof, and reinforcing tubes disposed in the bores of said cylindrical body and heads.
