My invention also relates to the type in `which a heavy pressure medium such as carbonic gas is released so as to actuate the piston and expel the liquid or fluid in a steady stream until the re extinguisher is exhausted. In re extinguishers of this type there has been difficulty in controlling the extinguishing medium, in re-filling the barrel or casing, and in preserving the contents without leakage'and without pressure on thev working parts. v
The object of my invention isv to produce a simple device of this character in whichthe pressure medium is carried in a capsule,
and in which a floating piston is used, but which also is arranged so that the casing or barrel can bel charged like a pu-mp rby the simple drawing up of the suction piston, and
in which a turn of the handle or cap at the top of the extinguisher will open the valve at the lower end and at the Sametime piercethe capsule andliberate the carbonio acid or other pressure medium so that the liquid lire extinguisher is immediately and nicely expelled. v v Y Another object of my invention is to make the structure in a very simple and inexpensive manner, to the end that nothing can get out of order, and that the apparatus can be supplied at a reasonable price.

i The figure is a broken longitudinal section of the fire extinguisher embodying my invention.
The apparatus 1s provided with a casing or barrel 10 which is preferably cylindrical and which has a removable bottom portion 11, and this in turn is provided with a removable nozzle 12 which screws to it and is provided with a gasket 13. The barrel 10 has also a removable top portion 14, preferably provided with an eye 15 to suspend it, and with a closure plug 16 which screws into lthe upper end of the member 14.. Obviously these features are not important, as the cas- ,mgcan be made 1n a slngle piece or 1n other form, without in the least affecting the invention. The plug 16 is removable and has a reduced upper end 17 which is provided with a nut 18, and suitable washers 19 and 20 can be inserted between the top of the casing and the nut so as to make sure that a tight joint is effected. At the upper end of the plug 16 is a gland 21 through which extends a rod 22, and this also extends through the handle or cap 23 which is threaded to it the reduced end 17 of the plug 16 and is chambered out to receive a pin 24 which limits the movement of the rod upward with pin 25 Vabove the cap and handle holds the handle and rod in right relation in the other direction. The rod 22 is rigidly connected' with a yoke or frame 26 which also connects with a rod 27, this extending longitudinally of the casing and forming a continuation of the A rod 22, the rods 22" and 27 acting together as presently described, and-the frame or yoke 26 simply serving to provide for the capsule holding means presently referred to. The rod 27 has at its lower end a disk 28, but the valve may be of any other type, and this fits upon a seat and closes the outlet to the nozzle 12. The upper end of the rod 27 terminates in a brad 29 which is adapted to pierce the capsule 30 containing liquid carbonio, acid or other -liquid which on being liberated will generate a gas which will exert suiiicient pressure in the apparatus. Any
suitable means can be provided for holding the capsule in place, and I do not limit my invention to a holder such as shown, but for Convenience I have shown a ysocket formed of the members 31 which are soldered or otherwise secured to the plug 16, and which have spring lingers 32 on opposite sides bent inward to gripy the lower part of the capsule 30. This capsule I do not claim as my invention, nor do I claim lthe use of it in a fire extinguishing apparatus, except in combination with other parts operating substantially as herein stated. Below the yoke 26 and fitting snugly but movably in the barrel 10, is a piston 33 which iselongated on opposite sides so that it will not wabble on the rod 27, any suitable guiding means being used for this purpose, and as a convenient guiding means I have shown a lianged nut 36on one side of the piston and a tube 35 filled with packingon the other side, this tube being provided with a flange 37 which screws up against the piston so that w'here the piston is in separable parts these will be clamped together between the nut of the gland 34 and the flange 37.
In most types of so-'called gun fire extmguishers the barrel has to be lled by pouring the liquid through the nozzle end,`
but it will be seen that with my device the plug 16 can be unscrewed and then the barrel'can be loaded like an ordinary squirt gun or suction pump,that is to say, the nozzle 12 can be inserted in the liquid with which the barrel is to be illed, and the piston 33 drawn upward by hand. This is because when the rod 27 is pulled out, the valve 28 will strike the lower side ofthe piston and pull the latter up vertically in the barrel 10, thus sucking in the liquid through the nozzle 12. When the plug 16 is screwed to place and the'c-ap or handle 23 screwed down, the valve 28 will be forced to its seat,
`and the apparatus will be in the position shown in Fig. 1. The capsule 30 will of course have first been slipped into its holder or socket before the iiuid is inserted in the barrel 10, by unscrewing the cap 16 and withdrawing the holder or socket through the cap opening. It will be seen that there is no pressure medium liberated in the barrel until the ire extinguisher is to be used, and that as the valve 28 is tightly closed, there is no leakage. When the apparatus is to be used, the operator simply gives a few turns on the cap' or handle 23,' which causes the rod 22 to move longitudinally upward. 'Ihe rod 27 will of course move with the rod 22, and the blade 29 will pierce the capsule 30 and liberate the carbonio acid or other pressure medium,'while the valve 28 will at the,
same time be .raised from its seat. The liberated pressure medium immediately expands and forces out the piston 33, thus expeiling the are, extinguishing liquid through the nozzle 12.
It will be readily seen that the apparatus is very-simple, that it can be pointed in any direction, and that there is nothing about it to get out of ordereven though it may be a long time before it is used.
I claim 1 A vfire extinguisher -comprising an elongated casing having a nozzle at one end, a valve to close the nozzle, a floating piston in the casing, a capsule holder in the casing behind the piston, and means for simultaneously opening the valve and breaking the capsule in the holder, therebyy releasing the pressure medium behind the piston.

A portable lire extinguisher comprising a casing having a nozzle at one end, a rod extending longitudinally through the casing, a valve on the rod to close the nozzle, a piston sliding on the rod and arranged to be engaged by the valve when the rod is pulled through the iston, a removable closure at one end oli) the casing, handle means connectedwith the rod and closure whereby when the latter is opened the rod can be pulled out to actuate the piston, and
