Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OE'EIGE.
JOSEPH LE COMTE AND GEORGE I-I. PERKINS, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL CANS.
Specification forming part of` Letters Patent No. 104,747, (lated June 28, 1870.
To all whom fit mag/concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH LE COMTE and GEORGE H. PERKINS, ct' the city of Brook. lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Construct-ion of the Scams ot a Metallic Gan or Cans; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to Vthe accompanying drawing, which is lettered to correspond with 'and form part of this specification.
To enable the public to understand the nature of our said improvement, and in what manner the same is to be constructed, we will describe it as lfollows, to wit: y
Figure l is a perspective drawing of a vertical section of a can, A, having expanded sides S S, and provided with uted heads, having the convex surface of the tluting F on the outside of the can, as shown in drawing.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the horizontal seam 2, showing the arrangement of the several parts thereof preparatory' to formin g the union of the top and bottom with the sides of a can by means of suitable dies torpressing the heads and sides into shape or form, preparatory A to using the horizontal pressure for inclining the upper edge P of the side S inward until it reaches P.
y Fig. 3 represents a vertical section ot' seam l after the vertical press has been used.
This seam is produced, rst, by employing a horizontal pressure to turn the lap I inward, as shown at Fig. 2. Then the vertical or drop press, having suitable dies, instantaneouslyr closes the entire seam or joint, which unites the head to the sides of the can A at a sin glc blow, ready for soldering.
The object of the ilutes F F is, first, to form a guidefor the soldering-iron while the can is being soldered 5 secondly, to form a ilexible top and bottom that will yield to the expansion ot' the contents of the can A without injury to the can itself.
The nature ot' our improvement consistsin the combination of the horizontal flanges M and C with the lap of the edges of t-he top and bottom of the can.'
What we claim vas our improvement, and what we wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The expanded sides S S, in combination with the horizontal seams l 2 3 4: and iiutes F, as shown in the drawing, all arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto subscribe our names in the presence of two witnesses.
JOS. LE COMTE. GEO. H. PERKINS.
Titnesses JAMES I. MoLEAN, ANNE S. MCLEAN.
