KEYING DEVICE FOR CUTTER-HEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 26, 1911. Serial No. 629,746.
citizen of ,the United States, residing at- Kirbyville, in the county of Jasper and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Keying Devices for Cutter-Heads, of which the following'is a. specification.
- This invention relates to means for attaching tools to shafts, such as cutter heads, priofile attachments, pulleys, wheels and the li e.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction for conveniently and expeditiously attaching cutter heads and like devices to rotating shafts and for adjusting the position of the cutter head, pulley or like device upon the shaft.
The invention consists in providing a cutter, pulley or the like with a centrally tapered hole in which is mounted a clamping sleeve having a threaded outer end to receive an operating nut. Provision is made for keeping the nut in constant engagement with the cutter head, pulley or the like, while the clamping sleeve is in position and for conveniently removing the nut when de sired, this means consisting in a split collar having nut and cutter'h'ead engaging flanges. The particular advantage in this type of device resides in the fact that if the sleeve becomes loose in the head or pulley the nut cannot become disengaged from the sleeve in rotation of the parts, it being always held in the same relation'withthe cutter head or hub of the pulley irrespective of the position of the sleeve therein.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a cutterhead'which is pro-' vided with a central longitudinal bore 2 gradually increasing in size from one end to the other and having communicating with the walls of the bore.

wardly and have their inner walls parallel Mounted in the bore is a hollow sleeve 4 which is provided with longitudinal slots 5 and constructed of a material which will have sufiicient-resiliency, when the sleeve is drawn into the bore, to contract and bind upon the shaft6. The outer end of the sleeve is provided with aclosing end 7 and threaded in this end is an adjusting screw 8 having a wrench receiving head 9 and a-binding or jam nut 10 mounted thereon. The Walls f the sleeve 1 are provided with apertures 1 having inwardly tapered walls and seated in the apertures are,plugs 12 which travel in the channels 3, so as to prevent the sleeve from turning relatively to the'cutter head, pulley or like device in which the sleeve is mounted.
Adjacent the upper end of the cutter head there is formed an internal annular chan- I nel 13 which communicates with the bore and is adapted to receive the sectlonal retaining ring or collar 14. This retaining ring is constructed of a plurality of sections 15, 16, 17 and 18, the sections 16 and 17 being provided with beveled ends so as to permit the insertion of the section 18 which is provided with correspondingly beveled ends.
Mounted upon the outer threaded end 19 of the sleeve 4 is an operating -nut 20 having a plurality of sockets 21 arranged around its periphery to receive a spanner wrench. or the like. Communicating with the bore through the nut is an annular channel 22 which is adapted to receive the upper flange of the sectional collar l4.- the lower flange being received by the channel13.
In the application of the device to a cutter head having a channel 13, the nut'is placed r upon the cutter head and the sections 15, 16 and 17 placed in position with their upper and lower fianges in the channels 22 and 13 respectively. These sections are then spread apart so as to permit the insertion of the section 18. The sleeve 4 is then inserted in the bore of the cutter head and the nut 20 partially turned thereon. The device is then placed upon the end of the shaft 6 and the screw 8 adjusted so as to properly position the cutter head. The nut 2Q is then further turned until the sleeve clamps the shaft in position. It will be observed that this type of connection may be utilized for securing profile attachments of planers, pulleys, automobile wheels to their axles, and in fact connect any type of device to an axle which is adapted to rotate therewith. The closing end 7 and the adjusting screw 8 may be dispensed with and the shaft passed directly through the sleeve if found to be necessary.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is The combination with a shaft and a de vice to be connected thereto having a tapered bore, of a split shaft-receiving sleeve mounted Within the bore and having tapered walls and a threaded end, said device having an annular channel communicating with the bore, a nut threaded on the sleeve and having an annular channel, and
a sectional retaining collar removably engaged with the annular channels of the device and nut and held in position by the sleeve. 7
