Be it known that I, EDWARD MULLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Weehawken, in the county of Hudson and.
provision of a device of this characterin which a plurality of delivery pipes are provided thus enabling several operators to use the same machine. r
A further oldject of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which a plurality of delivery pipes are connected tb a common water inlet pipe, in combination with means for independently controlling the supply of water through the delivery pipes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character of such a construction as to prevent leakage at the connection of the deliverypipes with the fixed inlet pipe when the device is. not in use.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated, and wherein like characters of references refer to similar parts in the several views.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved vehicle or carriage washer; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the central portion of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, parts being shown in section.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A designates a supporting plate which is adapted to be bolted or otherwise attached to a ceiling or other overhead sup-' port and from which depends a downwardly extending pipe A which is provided with a laterally disposed inlet opening a, to which is connected a fixed water supply pipe B Swiveled in the downwardly extending pipe A is a pipe 0, to the lower end of which are coupled the inner ends of oppositely extending delivery pipes C, and C Rotatably mounted on the exterior of the downwardly extending pipe A is a collar D. Rigidly connected at their inner ends in any suitable manner to the collar D are oppositely extending arms D and D which are adapted to directly overlie the delivery pipes C and C Depending from the outer ends of the arms D and D are suitable hangers (Z which are provided at the lower ends thereof with portions which are fashioned to embrace the delivery pipes D and D The hangers serve to assist in supporting the delivery pipes D and D and take the strain off the pipe C which is swiveled in the downwardly extending pipe A. The upper ends of the hangers d are convenient-ly connected to the arms D and D by means which will permit the hangers to be adjusted longitudinally.
Positioned within the water supply pipe B is a valve E which controls the flow of water to the swinging delivery pipes C and C The valve E may be of any suitable construction, and in the form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, I have shown a reciprocating valve, the stem of which projects upwardly through the valve casing and is adapted to be actuated by an arm 6 which is fulcrumed to the valve casing and overlies the projecting end of the valve stem, which arm is connected by a suitable link 6 with one end of a lever F which is fulcrumed intermediate its ends to a support secured in any suitable manner to the water supply pipe B. The inner end of the lever F is conveniently provided with a friction roller f for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly set forth. The valve E is conveniently of such a construction that it is normally held in its closed position.
G designates a leverv which is fulcrumed intermediate the ends thereof to the arm D which directly overlies the delivery pipe C Carried by the inner end of the lever G is a fiat ring G which is positioned above the arm D and surrounds the downwardly ex tending pipe A which extends from the supporting plate A. The fiat ring G directly underlies the inner end of the lever F and is adapted to contact with the friction roller f mounted thereon when the lever intermediate the ends thereof to the arm D which directly overlies the delivery pipe C. The inner end of the lever 11 is positioned directly beneath the ring G so that when the lever H is actuated the inner end thereof will be caused to engage said ring and elevate the same, thus effecting the opening of the valve E in the water supply'pipe "B. It will thus be seenthat the valve E may be opened by actuating either the lever G or the lever H; The inner end of the lever G is connected to the delivery pipe C positioned therebeneath, by means of a coil spring 9, while the inner end of the lever H is connected to the delivery pipe C directly therebelow by means of a similar coil spring h. i
Connected to the outer end of the delivery pipe C is a hose I, which may be of any well known construction, and connected to the outer'end of the delivery pipe C is a similar hose K. The flow of water through the delivery pipe C is controlled by a valve L, and the flow of water through the delivery pipe C is controlled by a valve M. The valves L and M may be of any convenient construction, and in the form of the invention illustrated in the drawings I have shown reciprocating valves, the stems of which project upwardly through the-valve casings and are adapted to be actuated by levers L and M which are fulcrumed to the valve casings and overlie the projecting ends of the valve stems. The valves L and M are of such a construction that they are normally held closed and are opened by depressing the levers L and M.
Means are provided for independently actuating the'valves L and M and for operating the valve E in the water supply pipe when either of said valves L and M are actuated. Extending from the outer end of the lever H is a chain or cable N which passes under a suitable pulley 11/ supported by the delivery pipe C and over a suitable pulley n which is positioned at the end of the delivery pipe and beyond the connection of the hose I therewith. A branch cable N extends from the cable'N vat some distance from its connection to the lever H and is connected at its outer end to the lever L which is provided for actuating the valve L in the delivery pipe 0.

The con tinued pull on the cable N will stretch the spring N and through the branch cable N actuate the lever L to open the valve L. As soon as the cable N is released, the parts will return to their normal position and the valves E and'L will close, thus shutting off the flow of water. It will be noted that when the cable N is pulled to effect the opening of valves E and L, the lever G will be actuated but the valve M will notbe opened. When it is delsired to cause the flow of water through the delivery pipe C a pull is exouter end of the operating lever M of the valve M is a branch cable 0. The branch erted on the cable 0 which will efiect the I A convenient way of operating the cables 7 N and O is to connect the outer ends thereof to the hose I and K which are connected to the ends of the delivery pipes. When this construction is used,the operator has only to pull on the hose to obtain water therethrough. i With the construction above described will'beseen that the flow of water throng the-two delivery pipes can be controlled at will by the two operators. It will also be noted that by locating the valve E in the main supply pipe, the pressure of the water in said pipe, when the machine isnot in'use, istaken ofi' of the swiveled joint between the delivery pipe and the supply pipe, so that leakage at this point is effectually pre vented. i i
While a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that many changes may be made to the formv and construction therein shown without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a water inlet pipe, a plurality of delivery pipes connected to said inlet pipe, a valve in said inlet pipe, a valve in each of said delivery pipes, said delivery pipe valves being independently operable, and means for operating the valve in the inlet pipe when either of the delivery pipe valves is operated.
2. In a device of the character described, a fixed water inlet pipe, a plurality of delivery pipes rotatably connected thereto, a valve in said water inlet pipe, a valve in each of said delivery pipes, said delivery pipe valves being independently operable, and means for actuating the Valve in the inlet pipe when either of the delivery pipe valves is operated.
3. In a device of the character described, a fixed water inlet pipe, a plurality of delivery pipes rotatably connected thereto, a
valve in said water inlet pipe, a valve in each'of said delivery pipes, independent operating means for each of said delivery pipe valves, and means for actuating the valve in the inlet pipe when either of said delivery pipe valves is actuated.
4. In a device of the character described, a fixed water inlet pipe, a plurality of delivery pipes rotatably connected thereto, a valve in said water inlet pipe, a valve in each of said delivery pipes, a flexible hose connected to the outlet end of each of said delivery pipes, a connection between the hose connected to each delivery pipe and the valve in said pipe, and means for operating the valve in the inlet pipe when either of the delivery pipe valves is operated. f
5. In a device of the character described, a fixed inlet pipe, two delivery pipes rotatably connected thereto, a valve in each of said delivery pipes, a valve in said inlet pipe provided with an operating member, a movable member rotatable with one of said delivery pipes and provided with a portion positioned to engage the actuating member of the valve in said inlet pipe when said movable member is shifted, a connection between said movable members and the valve in the delivery pipe, a second movable member rotatable with said other delivery pipe, and provided with a portion underlying said first mentioned movable member and a connection between said second movable member and the valve in said other delivery pipe.
6. In a device of the character described, a fixed inlet pipe, a pair of laterally extending delivery pipes rotatably connected to said inlet pipe, a valve in each of said delivery pipes, a valve in the inlet pipe, a lever rotatable with one of said delivery pipes, means foroperating the inlet pipe valve by said lever in any position of the delivery pipe, a connection between said lever and the valve in one of the delivery pipes, a sec- 0nd lever rotatable with the other of said delivery pipes and provided with a part positioned to engage said first mentioned lever when the second lever is shifted, and a connection between said second lever, and the valve in said other delivery pipe.
7. In a device of the. character described, a downwardly extending inlet pipe, a pipe rotatably mounted in the downwardly ex tending inlet pipe and having a pair of delivery pipes extending laterally therefrom and rotatable therewith, a valve in each of said delivery pipes, a lever rotatable with said delivery pipes and provided at its inner end with an annular portion surrounding the downwardly extending inlet pipe, a valve in the inlet pipe provided with an operating port-ion lying in the path of the annular portion of the lever, a connection between said lever and the valve in one of the delivery branches, a second lever rotatable with said delivery branches, the inner end of which is positioned to directly underlie the annular portion of said first mentioned lever, and a connection between the second lever and the valve in the other delivery pipe.
8. In a device of the character descri ed, a fixed inlet pipe, a valve therein, a par of laterally disposed delivery pipes rotatably connected to the fixed inlet pipe, a valve in each of said delivery pipes, a pair of oppositely extending independently movable levers rotatable with said delivery pipes, the adjacent ends of said levers overlapping, one of said levers and the valve in the inlet pipe being provided with cooperating OItlOIlS' whereby said valve can be operated by the lever in any position thereof, .an operating cable for each of said levers, and a connection between each of said operating cables and the valve in one of said delivery pipes. 9. In a device of the character described, a fixed water inlet pipe provided with a downwardly extending portion, a pipe rotatably connected to the downwardly extending portion of the fixed inlet pipe and provided with a pair of oppositely disposed delivery pipes rigidly connected thereto and extending laterally therefrom, a member rotatably supported upon the downwardly extending portion of the inlet pipe and provided with a pair of oppositely extending arms projecting therefrom and overlying the delivery pipes, a valve in the fixedvinlet pipe, a valve in each of saiddelivery pipes,
