Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SWEDEN- BoRc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtabula., in the county of Ashtabula and St-ate of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boat-Handling Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to devices for handling boats, and especially to devices for lowering life boats from the decks of vessels, and it has for its object the provision of a device of that kind which shall be rapid in operation, which shall be under perfect control by persons in the boat, and which shall not be subject to interference from ice which may accumulate thereon. In devices of this kind heretofore constructed, it has been necessary for the same to be operated by persons standing on the deck of the vessel, which persons, after the boat has been launched or partially lowered, climb down the side of the vessel and take their places in the boat. Such devices are slow in operation, and they have been so constructed that an accumulat-ion of ice on the deck has interfered with their operation, so that at times when life boats were most needed, the devices for handling the same have frequently been so frozen up that they could be operated only with great difliculty,
it being necessary to chop away the ice before the devices could be moved.
In the accompanying drawings, which show what is at present my proposed form of construction; Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device for handling boats, the boat being shown in end elevation; Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the center of the boat, and of the device for handling the l same; Fig. 3 is a detail showing one of the cradles for holding the boat; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the winch or windlass for lifting the boat and for controlling its descent; Fig. 5 is a plan view of t-he device for handling the boat, the position of the boat being indicated in dotted lines, and Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the Weighted pawl and the ratchet for holding the boat and for releasing the rope or cable supporting the boat so that the latter may be lowered into the water.
Taking up a detailed description of the invention by reference to the drawings, A is intended to represent the water line, and B a boat or vessel, said vessel being shown as having a lower deck C and an upper deck D. Of course, the vessel forms no part of my invention, which may be applied to almost any construction of boat or to docks or other places where boats are lowered into the Water.
The invention proper is shown as mounted upon the upper deck D.
E is the life boat, and F is a railing surrounding the lower deck C.
Journaled in suitable brackets 1 on the upper deck is the davit or derrick, the same consisting of a curved horizontal member 2, the ends of which are pivoted in the brackets 1; of a pair of derriok arms 3, which are secured to the said curved member substantially midway the said brackets, of upright braces 4: connecting the derrick arms with the said curved member and with a transverse brace 5, which extends across from one of the said arms 3 to the other, the entire structure being very rigid and turning in said brackets 1. VAt the point of connection between the arms 3 and the member 2, the davit is provided with a plate 6 which extends toward the left in Fig. 2, and with an eye-piece 7 extending in the opposite direct-ion. Journaled in suitable bearings on the upper deck and extending substantially parallel to the edge of the latter, is a rock-shaft 8, said shaft having a hand lever 9 attached thereto, the lever being provided with a hand grip 10 controlling a spring-pressed bolt 11, which bolt is adapted to lock into a slot in a segment plate 12 that is secured in a notch 13 formed in the edge of the deck.
As appears from Fig. 1, the hand lever yprojects over the lower deck C, and the same may be operated by a person standing on the said deck. Also connected to the shaft S is a. crank 14, said crank being connected, through a link 15, with a sliding bolt "16, which is mounted in suitable guides 17 von the upper deck. Vhen the hand lever 9 is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bolt 16 is projected into position for overlapping the plate 6 of the davit; and, when the hand lever is swung downwardly ,into the notch 13. of the upper deck, the bolt ldrum 26 of a winch or windlass,
16 is retracted so as to clear the plate 6 and permit the davit to turn in the brackets 1. Also secured to vthe shaft 8, near its ends, are crank arms 18, each of said arms being connected through a link 19 to the pivoted side 2O of the cradle for holding the boat when in normal position. There is one of these cradles secured to the upper deck near each of the pivots 1 and adjacent the ends of the boat, each of the cradles consisting of a movable part 20, hereinbefore referred to, said part being pivoted at 21 to the stationary part 22 of the cradles. The said stationary parts and also the pivoted parts 20 of the cradle, are curved so as to conform to the lower surface of the boat, whereby the same is held firmly in position. In order to accommodate the keel of the boat, the part 2O is provided with an angular eXtension 23. The stationary parts 22 are supported by bracket members 22a and 22h.
` The davit isA swung into the position shown inpfull lines in Fig. 1, by a cable 24 that is attached to the eye-piece 7 and runs under a pulley 25 that is secured to the upper deck. This cable is wound upon the the drum being supported upon a suitable frame 27. Secured to the drum is a large spur gear 28 with which meshes a small gear 29, the drawings showing the latter as a pin gear, forthe .reason that the teeth of the gear 28 break the ice from the pins more readily than they could from a spur gear. A crank 30 is provided for turning the said pin gear. Suspended from the upper end of each of the arms 3 is a pulley block 31, the same having an eye-piece32 into which one end of a hoisting rope or cable is secured. There are two of these hoisting cables designated 33 and 33a, one at each end of the boat E, the latter being provided with pulleys 34 and 34a about which said cables pass. Beginning with the eyepiece 32, the cable 33 extends downwardly about the pulley 34 on the boat, thence upwardly over a pulley in the block 31, thence downwardly around a pulley 35 on the deck D, thence in the direction of the boat E to a `drum 36. This drum is journaled in suitable brackets 37 on the upper deck, andthe two cables 33 and 33 extend therefrom in opposite directions.I whereby when the said drum 36 is rotated thev cables 33 and 33a are simultaneously shortened so as to lift the boat E and maintain the same in horizontal position. Ycured to the drum 36, and preferably integral therewith, is a larger drum 3 8, the same having secured thereto a rope or cable 39 which extends in the direction of the cable 33, passing over guide pulleys 40 and 41 on the upper deck, and hanging down alongside the deck within convenient reach of persons in the boat E when the davit is lowered, as hereinafter described. One of the heads of the drum 38 is provided with rentrant ratchet notches 42, (see Fig. 6), into which a pawl 43 is adapted to enter, said pawl being pivoted in a bracket 44 on the deck D and being provided with a weighted end 45. If the drum 38 be rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 6, the pawl 43 is released from the ratchet notches 42, whereupon the weight 45 rocks the pawl backward away from the drum, thus leaving the latter free to rotate.
The davit is prevented from swinging too far outwardly by a cable or rope 46 which is secured at one end to the deckand at the other end to the eye-piece 7.
In order to prevent the davit from swinging too freely in lowering the boat, T provide the winch or windlass with a suitable cont-rolling device, one form of the same beling illustrated in Fig. 4, and consisting of a crank disk 47 which is secured to the shaft carrying the pinion or gear 29. This crank disk is connected by a link 48 to a piston rod 49, said rod carrying a piston 50 which is surrounded by a cylnder 51. The cylinder is made fluid-tight, and its opposite ends are connected outside the cylinder through a pipe 52, in which I place a valve 53 for regulating the effective size. of the opening through the pipe. As the drum 26 rotates, the piston 50 is moved up and down within the cylinder, such movement forcing the liquid or air therein alternately from one end of the cylinder to the other thro-ugh the pipe 52. By adjusting the valve 53, the de sired speed of the winch may be secured.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming the boat E to be resting upon the cradle, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and that it be desired to lower the same, the men who man the boat may take their positions upon the lower deck C. By depressing the lever 9, the movable part 2O of the cradle is swung outwardly and downwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, vand the plunger 16 is simultaneously withdrawn from the plate 6. The weight of the boat overbalances the davit, and the same turns about in the brackets 1, unwinding the cable 24 from the drum 26 and rotating the latter, the piston 50 regulating the speed at which the drum rotates and at which the davit is lowered. The davit continues to swing until the slack in the cable 46 is taken up, at which time the boat E has taken the middle position shown in Fig. 1, just outside the railing F, and in such position that the men on the lower deck may readily step into the boat. Having taken their positions in the boat, the men pull on the cable 39, and thus rotate the drum 38 in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 6, thereby releasing the pawl 43 from the ratchet notches 42. Thereafter the rope 39 is simply payed out .and the boat is lowered under the control of the men therein, until it reaches the water level, as indicated in Fig. l, after which the pulleys 34 and 34a may be disengaged and the boat left free in the water. In hoisting the boat the reverse operation takes place; namely, the pulleys 34 and 34a are attached to the boat, the rope or cable 39 is hauled inwardly, thereby winding the hoisting cables 33 and 33a on the drum 36 until the boat has reached the middle position shown in F ig. l. The pawl 43 is then engaged with the drum 38, and the winch is operated to wind up the cable 24 and thus swing thev davit with the boat back into its normal position, the boat resting upon the stationary parts of the cradles. The hand lever 9 is then swung to its normal position, thereby raising the pivoted positions of the cradles and throwing the plunger 16 over the plate 6 on the davit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. In a device 'or handling boats, the combination with a vessel having' an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted upon the upper deck, a boat suspended from the davit outside of the vertical through the 'davit pivots so as to tend to cause the davit to swing upon said pivots, means operable from the lower deck for normally holding the davit against such swinging movement, mechanism for controlling the swinging movement of the davit, such movement bringing the boat substantially opposite the lower deck and means adapted to be under control of persons in the boat for lowering the latter below the lower deck.
2. In a device `for handling boats, the
combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted upon the upper deck, a boat suspended from the davit outside of the vertical through the davit pivots so as to cause the davit to swing upon said. pivots, means for normally locking the davit against such swinging movement,` a cradle in which the boat normally rests, means operable by persons standing on the lower-deck for unlocking the davit and for releasing the boat from the cradle, mechanism for controlling the swinging movement of the davit, such movement bringing the boat substantially opposite the lower deck and means adapted to be under control of persons in the boat for lowering the latter below the lower deck.
3. In a device for handling boats, the combination with a vessel having` an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, such davit having a pair or" arms rigidly connected together so that the entire davit moves as a single member about its pivot, pulleys carried by the said arms, apulley secured to the said boat adjacent to each of its ends, a drum journaled in bearings on the upper deck, a pair of cables wound upon the said drum from opposite directions, one cable of the pair passing over the pulley on one of the arms ot the davit and also about the pulley at the adjacent end of the boat and the other cable of the pair passing over the 'pulley on the other arm of the davit and about the pulley on the adjacent end of t-he boat, means for permitting the davit to swing about its pivots to lowerthe boat from its normal position to a position adjacent the lower deck, and means under control of persons in the boat for lowering the latter below the lower deck and for controlling such lowering movement.
4. In a device for handling boats, the combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, such davit having a pair of arms rigidly connected together so that the entire davit moves as a single member about its pivot, pulleys carried bythe said arms, a pulley secured to the said boat adjacent each of its ends, a drum ournaled in bearings on the upper deck, a pair ot cables wound upon the said drum from opposite directions, one cable of the pair passing over the pulley on one of the arms of the davit and alsol about the pulley at the adjacent end of the boat and the other cable of the pairv passing o-ver the pulley on the other arm of the davit and about the pulley on the adjacent end of the boat, a cradle in which the boat normally rests, means for releasing the boat from the cradle and for permitting the davit to swing about its pivots to lower the boat from its normal position to a position adjacent the lower deck, and means under control of persons in the boat for lowering the latter below the lower deck and for controlling such lowering movement.
5. In a device for handling boats, the combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, said davit consisting of a pair of diverging arms with means for ho-lding said arms rigidly together, whereby the davit moves about its pivot as a single member, a pulley block for and suspended from the end of each of the arms of the davit, a boat having a pulley adjacent each of its ends, a cradle secured to the upper deck in which the boat normally rests, a drum journaled in bearings on the upper deck, a pair of cables secured to the drum and wound thereon from opposite directions, one cable ot the pair passing over the pulley in one ofthe pulley blocks, thence around the pulley on the adjacent end of the boat and back to the said pulley block to which it is secured and the other cable of the pair passing over the other pulley block, thence about the pulley on the adjacent end of the boat and back to the last mentioned pulley block to which it is secured, means for normally locking the.

a cradle secured to the upper deck in which the boat normally rests, the cradle. having a movable side member, a drum journaled in bearings on the deck, a pair of cables secured to the drum and wound thereon from opposite directions, one cable of the pair passing over the pulley on the adjacent end of the boat and back to said pulley block to which it is secured, and the other cable of the pair passing over the other pulley block, thence about the pullev on the adjacent end of the boat and back to the last mentioned pulley block to which it is secured, means for normally locking the davit against 1novement with the pulley blocks thereon above the boat, means operable by persons on the lower deck for unlocking the davit and moving the side member of the cradle for releasing the boat from the cradle, whereby the davit may swing outwardly and thus lower the boat ,into a posit-ion opposite the lower deck and means under control of persons in the boat for controlling the rotation of the drum, whereby the drum may be lowered below the lower deck.
7. In a device for handling boats, the combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, said davit comprising a pair of diverging arms and members for holding such arms rigidly in position whereby the entire davit may turn about its pivot as a single member, a boat suspended from the arms of the davit, means for normally locking the davit against movement and means under control of persons standing on the lower deck for unlocking the davit, whereby the latter may swing outwardly and downwardly and thus lower the boat.
8. In a device for handling boats, the combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the said upper deck, said davit comprising a pair of diverging arms and members for holding such arms rigidly in position, whereby the entire davit may turn about its pivot as a single member, a boat suspended from the arms of the davit, a cradle upon the upper deck in which the boat normally rests, means for normally locking the davit against movement and means under control of persons standing on the lower deck for unlocking the davit, and for releasing the boat from the cradle, whereby the davit may swing outwardly and downwardly and thus lower the boat.
9. In a device for handlingboats, the combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, a boat suspended from the davit, a pair of cradles upon which the boat normally rests, said cradles each having a pivoted side, a plunger bolt normally locking the davit against movement, a rock shaft, a hand-lever secured to the rock shaft for turning the latter, said hand-lever being in position for operation by persons standing on the lower deck, means for connecting the rock shaft with the pivoted sides of the cradles and with the plunger bolt, whereby, when the handlever is operated to turn the shaft, the boat is released from the cradles and the davit is unlocked, a winch, a cable wound upon said winch and connected to the davit, whereby the swinging movement of the latter turns the winch, means connected with the winch for controlling the speed of its movement and means under control of persons in the boat for lowering the latter below the lower deck andV for controlling the speed at which the boat is thus moved.
10. In a device for handling boats, the combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, a boat suspended fro-1n the davit, a pair of cradles upon which the boat normally rests, said cradles each having a pivoted side, a plunger bolt normally locking the davit against movement, a rock shaft, a hand-lever, secured to the rock shaft `for turning the latter, said hand-lever being in position for operation by persons standing on the lower deck, means fer connecting the rock shaft with the pivoted sides ofthe cradles and with the plunger bolt, whereby,
`when the hand-lever is operated to turn the shaft the boat is released from the cradles and the davit is unlocked, a winch, a cable lwound upon said winch and connected to the davit, whereby the swinging movement of the latter turns thel winch, means con- 4neet-ed with the winch for controlling the speed of its movements, means for arresting the davit when the'boat is substantially op vposite the lower deck, and means under control of persons in the yboat for lowering Vthe latter below the lower deck and for controlling the speed at which the boat is thus moved.
11. In a rdevice for handling boats, the
combination with a vessel having an upperl and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, said davit having a pair of diverging arms and bracing members connecting such arms so as to form a rigid struct-ure that turns about its pivot as a single inember, a boat suspended from the arms of the davit, a cradle in which the boat normally rests, means under control of persons standing on t-lie lower deck for releasing the boat from the cradle, whereby the arms of the davit may swing outwardly and downwardly and thus lower the boat, a cable connected to the davit for controlling the pivotal movement of the latter, a winch upon which said cable is wound, said winch rotating as the davit is swung on its pivots, a crank shaft for turning with said winch and for drawing the davit back into its normal position, a pump operated from the said crank shaft and means for controlling the operation of the pump, whereby the speed of rotation of the winch is regulated and the rapidity with which the davit is swung isi l unlocking the davit, whereby the arms controlled.
12. In a device for handling boats, with a combination vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upperdeck, said davit having a pair of divergingv arms and bracing members connecting such arms so as to form a rigid structure that turns about its pivot as a single member, a
boat suspended from the arms of the davit,
a pair of cradles in which the boat normally rests, each of said cradles having al pivoted side member, means under conti-ol of persons standing on the lower deck for swinging the pivoted cradles, whereby the arms of the davit swing outwardly and downwardly and thus lower the boat, a cable -connected to the davit for controlling the pivotal movement of the latter, a winch upon which said cable is wound, said winch rotating as the davit is swung on its ivots, a crank shaft turning with the said winch and for drawing the davit back into its normal posit-ion, a cylinder, a pist-on in the cylinder, connections for operating the piston from the said crank shaft, a pipe connecting the ends of the cylinder and a valve in said pipe, whereby the speed of rotation of the winch is regulated and the rapidity with which the davit is swung is controlled.
18. In a device for handling boats, the combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit mounted upon the upper deck, a boat, a drum, cables wound upon said drum from opposite directions and connecting the davit and the boat, means under control of persons standing on the lower deck for permitting the davit to swing outwardly and downwardly, whereby the boat is lowered to a position subst-antially opposite the lower deck and means under control of the persons who l thence around the pulley on the adjacent take their places in the boat forL controlling the rotation of the drum, whereby the boat is lowered below the lower deck.
14. In a device for handling boats, the combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, said davit having a pair of diverging arms and bracing members connected thereto for causing said davit to move as a single member, a pulley block carried by each of the arms of the davit, a` boat, a pulley secured to each end of the boat, a drum, a pair of cables wound upon said drum from opposite directions, one of said cables passing over the pulley in one of the pulley blocks, thence around the adjacent pulley on the boat and back to the pulley block and the other cable passing about the pulley in the other pulley block,

15. In a device for handling boats, the combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, said davit having a pair of diverging arms and bracing members connected thereto for causing said davit to move as a single member, a pulley block carf ried on each end of the boat, a pair of cradles in which the boat normally rests, each of said cradles having a pivoted side, a drum mounted in journals upon the upper deck, a pair of cables wound upon said drum from opposite directions, one of said cables passing over the pulley in one of the pulley blocks, thence around the adjacent pulley on the boat and back to the pulley block and the other cable passing about the pulley in the other pulley block, thence about the pulley on the adjacent end of the boat and back to the last mentioned pulley block, means for normally locking the davit against pivotal movement, means operable from the lower deck for moving the pivoted side of the cradles and for unlocking the davit, whereby the arms thereon may swing outwardly and downwardly to lower the boat into a position substantially opposite the lower deck, a second drum connected with the rst mentioned drum, and a lowering cable wound upon the second drum vand adapted to hang down the side of the vessel, whereby the persons in the boat may grasp the same and control the rotation of the said drums and thereby cont-rol the lowering movement of the boat.
16. In a device for handling boats, the combinat-ion with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted on the upper deck, said davit having a pair of diverging arms, a pulley block attached to each of said arms, a boat, a drum, a pair of cables wound around the said drum from opposite directions and extending respectively to a pulley block on the davit and thence to the boat, whereby the boat is suspended from the said davit by said cables, means for permitting the davit to turn on its pivot so as to carry its arms outwardly and downwardly and thus lower the boat into a position substantially opposite the lower deck, a second drum connected with the rst mentioned drum and being provided with rentrant ratchet notches, a weighted pawl adapted to engage in said notches for holding the drum against movement in the direction for lowering the boat, and a cable wound upon the said second drum and adapted to hang alongside the vessel in position to be continuously within the reach of persons in the boat while the latter is being lowered, the construction being such that when said persons take their places in the boat from the lower deck they may rst pull upon the last mentioned cable to rotate the drums until the weighted pawl disengages said notches and may then pay out the cable to further lower the boats below the lower deck.
17. In a device for handling boats, vthe combination with a vessel having an upper and a lower deck, of a davit pivoted in bearings on the upper deck, said davit comprising a pair of diverging arms and members connecting said arms for forming the davit into a rigid structure that turns about its pivot as a single member, a pair of cradles mounted upon the upper deck, eachA of said cradles having a pivoted side member, a boat normally resting in said cradles, a pulley bl'ock carried by each of the arms of the davit, a pulley secured to the boat adjacent Yeach end of the latter, a drum journaled in bearings, cables wound upon said drum and extending therefrom in opposite directions, said cables then being carried upwardly over the respective pulleys on the davit arms, thence down around the adjacent pulleys on the boat and thence back to their respective pulley blocks, a plunger bolt normally engaging the davit for locking the same against movement, a rock shaft, a hand-lever connected to the said rock shaft for turning the latter, said hand-lever extending into position for operation from the lower deck, crank arms connected with the rock shaft, links connecting said arms with the pivoted sides of the cradles, another crank arm connected with the rock shaft, a link connecting the latter crank arm with the plunger bolt, whereby the rocking of the said shaft simultaneously moves the bolt and the pivoted sides of the cradles, thus releasing the boat from the cradles and permitting the davit to swing on its pivots, a winch, a cable connecting said winch with the davit, means for regulating the speed at which the davit may turn, means for arresting the boat when the davit is substantially opposite the lower deck, a second drum connected with the first mentioned drum, said second drum being provided with a series of rentrant ratchet notches, a weighted pawl adapted to engage in said notches and a cable connected with said second drum and adapted to hang down alongside the boat within reach of persons in the boat, the construction being such that after the davit is swung and the boat lowered opposite the second deck, the persons taking their places therein may pull upon the first mentioned cable until the said pawl is disengaged from the ratchet notches, after which the drums may be permitted to rotate in the opposite direction to lower the boat into the water.
