Description
D. M. PETERS. GUARD FOR JOINTE APPLIGATION FILED mm Patented Dec. 10, 1912.

GUARD FOR JOINTERS.
L0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 1)AN: IEL M. PETERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellwood, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, lave invented a new and useful Improvement in Guards for Jointers, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to a guard for jointers, the object of the invention being to protect bojh the hands and clothing of the operator, )y providing effectual means for covering the cutter irrespective of the Width of the plank being operated upon.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accon'ipanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in position for use, parts being in section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan View, partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a cross section through a slide-way.
In these drawings, 1 represents a table of the usual construction, provided with a rotary cutter :2, the table being suitably slotted as at 3, and being provided with the ordinary facing plate 1 Arranged loeneath the table and parallel to the slot 3 is a slide-way 4 formed of a channel beam, said slide-way projecting slig.1tly beyond one side of the table and said projecting portion having its upper portion cut away as indicated at t". This slide is secured in place by means of clamping plates-5, which pass transversely beneath the slide-way and are secured to the table by means of suitable bolts 6. A suitable bar 7 is back and forth in the slide-way, being locked in an adj ustcd position by means of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application 'fiLed June 27,
adapted. to work Patented Dec. 1 0, 1912, 1912. Serial No. 706,270.
' a hand screw 8, which works through one of the plates 5, and bears against the underside of the bar 7. Upon the pro ecting portion of said bar is arranged a block 9, and
said block is provided with an angled flangel0 titted upon the top and one side of the block and to said flange is riveted a sheet metal guard plate 11, the free edges of which are provided with depending flanges 12. This plate projects over the slot 3 and by shifting the bar 7 in the slide-way, the said plate can be adjusted with respect to the face plate l For example, if the plank operated upon is six inches in width, the bar 7 will be adjusted so that the plate 11, will be spaced six inches from the face plate 1, so that the guard plate 11 will cover all of the slot 3 except that portion which is covered by the board. In like manner adjustment can be made for any width of board.
What I claim is The combination with a jointer table, and a rotary cutter, of a slide-way secured be neath the table parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cutter, a bar slidably secured in said slide-way, a block carried by a pro jecting end portion of the bar, an angled plate secured upon said block, and'extending above the table and in vertical aline ment with the slide-way, and a flanged guard carried by said angled plate, said guard being adapted to cover a portion of said cutter.
