J. R. MAYNARD & B. P. MASSEY.
PLUMB LEVEL.
APPLIQAMONHLED ML2?, 1911.

JOHN RUFFUS MAYNARD AND BENJAMIN F. MASSEY, OF CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA.
PLUME-LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 27, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JoHN R. MAYNARD and BENJAMIN F. MAssEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Levels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to levels and the principal object of the same is to provide a level in which the engaging handles are mounted upon shafts which are seated in the movable plugs so that if a shaft works loose the plug can be removed and a new one inserted.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for securing the dial in place.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of the level. Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section along the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the ring which holds the dial in place. Fig. 5 is a view of a pointer which may be used with this level. Fig. 6 is a view of a modied form of pointer. Fig. 7 is a modified form of the pointer. Fig. 8 is a sectional View through a modified .form of dial.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that this level comprises a body portion 10 which is rectangular in shape and is provided with an indicating means at each end upon opposite faces, and a central indicating means upon each face. The indicating means are constructed in a similar manner so that a description of one of the indicators is suiflcient for all of them.
The body portion is provided with a seat 11 cut in the face which is provided with a central socket 12. The outer portion of the seat 11 is enlarged to form a seat 13 for the glass, and a seat 14 for the securing ring. A plug 15 is fitted in the socket 12 and the dial 16, which is provided with a central opening is placed in the seat 11, and rests upon the plug 15 so that the shaft 17 upon which the pointer 18 is pivotally mounted may be passed through the opening 19, and into the plug 15. This plug is removably secured so that if the shaft 17 works loose, the plug can be removed and a new one inserted. A split ring 20, which is formed of spring metal, and which is normally of greater diameter than the diameter of the seat 11, is placed within the seat, and rests upon the dial 16 so that when the ring is released, it will clamp the sides of t-he seat 1l, and hold the dial in place. The outer edge of the ring -is liush with the seat 13 so that the glass 21 which fits in the seat 13 rests upon the outer edge of the ring 20. The glass is held in place by means of a plate 22 which is secured in the seat 14 by means of the screws 23 so that its beveled face 24 will engage the beveled edge of the glass and securely hold the glass in place. These indicators may be provided with any desired type of pointer, such for instance as the type shown in Fig. 1 or with the types shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. If desired the dial may be provided with an integral iange 25 which is used in place of the split ring 20. This flange 25 is of such a height that it will be engaged by the glass 2l, and tightly held in place.
What we claim is z- In a level comprising a body portion having a recess cut in the side thereof and having a ledge cut adjacent to the outer end of said recess, a second ledge cut around said first mentioned ledge, said body portion being provided with a socket at the center of said recess, a plug mounted in said central socket, a plate in said recess, an open eX- pansion band in said recess resting upon said plate, a pin passing through said plate into said plug, an indicator mounted upon said pin, a transparent disk mounted upon said irst mentioned ledge and resting upon said band, and a ring mounted upon said second mentioned ledge and Voverlapping said disk to hold the same in place.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aiiiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
