DANIEL J'. RING, OF QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS.
H l GARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 7, 1911. Serial No. 664,317.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. KING, of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Garter, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to provide a garter which will efficiently engage the stocking and which at the same time will be simple and inexpensive.
The main feature of my invention is the use of a cord member which engages the stocking and also clamps itself to the stocking.
Other features of the invention will be pointed out below.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing the garter in place on the leg: Fig. 2 is a front elevation enlarged of the stocking engaging members: Fig. 3 is a central section of the same; and Fig. is a rear elevation of the same.
The main gripping member is preferably of leather or similar material and has a flat body portion A and also has an ofi-set projection consisting of a head a, a projecting lip a and groove a to engage the stocking. It is also provided with a headed stud consisting of shank a having a head a for a purpose hereinafter pointed out. It has an inclined passage from its rear face at a: leading through to its front face and has a passage a leading from its front to its rear face, this passage being slightly to one side of the longitudinal central line of member A. I also provide grooves a a in the sides of member A for a purpose later described.
Member B is preferably a cord, knotted 1 at one end to engage the rear face of member A at a and extending thence through the inclined passage to the front of member A, thence along the front of member A, thence through passage a to the rear of member A, thence across the rear and through groove a to the front, thence across the front and through groove a to the rear, thence passing through passage a to the front of member A. The cord member then passes around head a, beneath lip a and through groove engaging the stocking between it and member A. Member B then extends in a substantially straight line across the front of member A passing beneath member B at y and 3 then passing partly around shank a beneath head a. Member B ends in triangular loop 7) which the dotted line at 6. Loop 72 is in sliding engagement with the ordinary looped leather strap B having the ordinary buckle b for adjustment purposes. The strap B is shown as extending around the leg although it might engage any other suitable support such. as a corset and at its end is formed with a loop 6 the inside of which engages loop 71 the latter being preferably stitched to loop 6 as indicated by engages shank a and is prevented from slipping off therefrom by head a.
In using my garter the edge of the stocking is placed over head a of the offset projection and'is firmly clamped between the edges of the head and member B where the latter passes around said head and also between member B and groove a Member B holds itself firmly clamped against the stocking because when the portion above head a is drawn upon all the rest of member B toward the knot at a; is tightened and the portion of member B which extends in a substantially straight line from groove a to shank a is firmly clamped beneath those portions of member B indicated at g and y. Putting the central passage through member A slightly off center enables me to run member B from groove a to shank a in a substantially straight line and this is preferable because it makes the device smooth and flat and prevents liability of kinking. It is preferable to run member B from the right edge of groove a (as shown in Fig. 2) to the left edge of shank a and when member B is loosened to remove the stocking it is desirable that member B be held in the position shown so that it will be in said position when the garter is to be attached to the stocking and this is accomplished by that portion of member B which extends across the front of member A be tween groove a and groove (1 because said portion remains suflioiently taut to retain member B so that it will run from the right of groove (1 to the left of shank a By providing a loose connection between loop 7; and strap B I make sure that the pull on said strap will always be a central one.
The head tance from the body a may be at any desired disportion of member A as its main function is to prevent member B from slipping off from the shank but it may be desirable to clamp member B be neath saidhead and this may be done by Patented Dec. 10, 1912.
making said distance slightly less than the 1 sum of the diameters of member B and of the member forming loop 5 It will be clear that the more strain there is on member B the more firm will be the, clamping force exerted by member B itself.
The rigid connection between loop Z) and loop 6 makes sure that slipping will be avoided which is an advantage of importance.
What I claim is 1. A garter comprising two members to engage a stocking between them, one member having a body portion, an offset projection and a headed stud; and the other member being connected at one end to the first member, extending thence over said body portion and thence around said offset projection to grip the stocking between it and said projection, said othermember extending from said projection beneath the abovementioned portion of itself which extends along said body portion, thence partly around said headed stud to engage a support, that portion of the second member extending from said projection to said stud being clamped between said body portion.
7 and said portion of itself which extends the other edge,
over said body portion to maintain the grip. upon the stocking.
2. A garter comprising one member hav- 7 ing a body portion with a headed stud near one end; and a second member cooperating with the first member at a distance fromsaid stud to grip the stocking, a leg-encircling band, said second member extending from said gripping point to and partly around said stud to engage said leg encircling band; said band carrying at its free end a loop, the latter adapted to encircle said stud and clamp a portion of the second member beneath the head of the stud.
3. Agarter comprising a member having? a headed stud near one end, a grooved oifset projection and two passages extending from one face of said member through to the other face; and a second member knottedi at one end, extending through one of said passages, thence across one face of the first member, thence through the other of said passages, thence around one edge of the first. member, thence across said face and around thence through the second namedpassage, thence through said groove, thence to said stud across said face and beneath that portion of itself which extends from edge to edge of said face, a support, said second member extending thence partly around said stud to engage one end of said support, the latter being connected at its other end to said first member.
