SEWING-MACHINE.
' Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in sewing machines, and especially to machines for weaving a thread back and forth upon the upper surface of the fabric, making an ornamental stitch upon the upper surface of the fabric, the appearance of the stitch being similar to an embroidery stitch.
The present invent-ion comprises as to its stitch-forming mechanism, two thread-carrying needles arranged oblique to each other respecting the line of feed, with two under thread-carrying loopers cooperating therewith, to form stitches, and a vibrating thread-carrying finger above the cloth plate oscillating back and forth, in a diagonal path across the line of feed to lay the thread diagonally, and so carrying its thread with respect to the needles that it passes back of the path of the needles and the thread is sewed down by the needles upon the upper surface of the fabric. The finger carries preferably an ornamental cord or yarn of some kind instead of the usual thread.
The present invention relates more especially to a novel mechanism for oscillating the thread-carrying finger, and it consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.

In these drawings, A represents the bed plate of a Union Special Machine of ausual type; B is the needle bar carrying the needles a, 6, herein shown as two in number, and arranged oblique to each other with respect to the line of feed, these two needles cooperate with two loopers on the under side of the throat plate.
0 represents the driving shaft, provided with a gear D, meshing with a gear E, upon Specification of Letters Patent.

embraced by the lower end of an eccentric connecting rod or pitman G, which at its upper end is pivoted to the lower end of the crank arm H, attached to the rocking shaft J, journaled on the machine frame, in any suitable manner. Said shaft J .has near its opposite end a downwardly depending crank arm K, which is pivotally attached at its lower end to the ball stud L, which is embraced by one end of the horizontal connecting rod M, which latter at its opposite end has a clamp embracing a ball N on the end ofthestud O, which at its opposite end is fixedly sleeved upon the vertical shaft P,
journaled in the head of the machine, and
having means at its lower end for the attachment of the shank of the thread-carrying finger Q, which oscillates back and forth across the line of feed in a diagonal path.
The gear F has twice the number of teeth as the lower gear, hence the finger will be driven to either one of its extreme positions, and remain there while the needles are making a full reciprocation, thus allowing the needles to stitch down to the fabric the thread carried by the finger Q.
It will be seen that I have provided a thread-carrying finger which is mounted on a shaft located at one side of the line of stitching, and which finger oscillates in a curved path from a point at one side of and in advance of the front needle, to a point at one side of and in rear of the back needle. By this movement of the thread finger which moves once across the line of feed for each complete reciprocation of the needles, I am able to lay a thread across the line of feed between each pair of consecutive needle punctures.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the stitch-forming mechanism of a sewing machine, including a plurality of needles set in an oblique position with respect to the line of feed of thread laying mechanism, comprising a thread-carrying finger, a vertical shaft supporting the same, and means for operating the shaft, said vertical shaft being disposed at one side of the line of feed, whereby said thread-carrying finger moves in an arc substantially equal distances from said needles.
2. In combination with a driving shaft,

In combination with the stitch forming mechanism-of a sewing machine, including a a plurality of needles set in an oblique position with respect .to the line of feed, a thread carrying finger, oscillating in a curved'path from a point to one side and in advance of the front needle to a point to one side and in rear of the back needle, a vertical shaft supporting the same, said vertical shaft being disposed at one side of the line of feed, a rock shaft, with connections between the rock shaft, and the shaft forfoscillating the finger, a driving shaft, and connections between the driving shaftand the rock shaft for operating the latter.
