WILLIAM HENRY GALVIN, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
SMOKING-PIPE. i
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that'I, IVILLIAM HENRY GAL- a citizen 'of the United States, and a and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, ofwhich the following isa specihad to the'accompanyling'drawings. l
T is invention relates to-'certain new and useful improvements in smoking pipes, and the object of my invention is tov provide a smoking pipe including a removable foraminous plate whichv is held a suitable distance above the bot-tomof the pipe and above the y draft openingleading into the stein, so that ai chamber is provided below the disk into nwhich any saliva entering the stem will drain. l
Another object is to provide a pipe of a simple and inexpensivel vnature and of a durable construction including a removable tobacco carrying plate which shall be capableof convenient adjustment iii position within the ipe bowl in a manner to prevent the saliva raining into the bowl coming contact with'the tobacco.
A further object is to provide a suitable I pipe with'a foraminous tobacco support-ing disk having anotched circumscrbing spring flange insuring the disk being held within the pipe .bowl in spring pressed condition, thereby preventing casual displacement of the disk, the disk further, in being withdrawn from the bowl, abrading the inner Asurface of the pipe, thereby cleaning the same. y i With these and other objects in view, the
present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointedout in the appended'v claim, it being further understood that changes in the spe-k cific struetureshown and described ma. be made within the scope of the claim witout departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in whi-ch like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is an elevational view of the pip'e embodying my iiivention, disclosing the bowl in section. Fig. 2 is a top view of the ipe with a portion of the stem removed. ig. 3 is a section on line 3, 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows an elevationaldetail of the' tobacco carrying disk.

Application filed February 14, 1912,`Se1ial No. 677,494. Renewed October 24, 1912. Serial No. 727,561.
i Fig. 'ishows` a detached detail ofthe pipe bowl.
In my present invention' I provide a tobacco pipe soI constructed thatl the tobacco 'within the same will be held upon the removable foraminous disk located a suitable distance above'the bottom of the pipe so that there is provided :in air chamber below the tobacco holding member which further serves to receive anyT saliva thatmay drain.
into -the pipe bowl. The chamber further serves as a cooling compartment, thereby preventing the lower end of the pipe bowl becoming heated. 4
In the accompanying drawings, the nu* ineral 1 designates a suitable pipe bowl having a cylindrical opening 7 I lie lower end 2 of the bowl is preferably provided with an exterior screw thread to rceivea cap 15. This cap` may be of'metal oi' any other suitable material; and is detachably secured'to the bottom of the pipe bowl, as shown in Fig l.' Near'the lower end, the pipe bowl. -is provided with the stem aperture 3, while located withiny the upper edge of the bowl are the two oppositely positioned earl openings 4. As shown in Fig. 2, the semi-circular bail seat 5 extends from one ear opening to the other.
Arranged -to be removably and frictionally held within the'l pipe bowl opening 7 is the foraminous disk 8 having the circumsoribing notched upstanding resilient flange 9. This flange 9 performs a double function in that it not only holds the disk against casual displacement within the pipe bowl, but in withdrawing the disk from the bowl,
this resilient flange 9 shears off the charred inner surface .of the pipe bowl, thereby keeping the inner bowl surface clean'above the disk. This foraminous disk is held a suitable. distance'above the stein bpening 3 -as clearly shown in Fig. 1, land extending from the inner face of this foraminous disk are the two oppositely positioned arms 10, each arm ending in an angularapertured earll. within the apertures off'which are pivotally held the re-c'urved ends 12 of the bail 13. This bail is preferably iade of lspring wire, and is ofsuch size that it requires manualmanipulation to force the bail i'nto the seat 5. After being seateid, it' 'necessarily requires manual manipulation to unseat the bail.l 'As shown in Fig. 1, the angular apertured ears 11 are arrangedto seat-within the openings 4.
portion above the disk. As the bore withinA In connection with the bowl 1, yI havel shown a stem 6 which. ma be of any convent-ional construction and7 is arranged to bev secured within the opening 3.
The pipe is used exactly as any other pipe is used. The smoke, after passing through the foramina of thedisk 8 enters thelower portion of the pipe bowl from which it is drawn through the stem 6. 4A s the tobacco is held above the. stem opening 3, t-he saliva entering the pipe bowl will not contact with the tobacco. -The pipe is emptied in unscrewing the cap 15;' The foraminous disk can be readily 'kept in a sanitary condition in that-the same can'easily be withdrawn. The disk edge 9 abrades the inner surface of the pipe bowl and so removes any charred thelpi 'e bowl enlarges in the use of the pipe, t e notched disk 9 is flared outward whichlcan be easily done.4 Under these conditions, the foraminous disk is always tightly held within the pipe bowl, while the bail is securely held within its seat.
A pipe constructed according to my invention is simple and inexpensive and both durable and eiiicient in operation and the adjust-ment of the foraminous disk within A smoking pipe including a bowl havinga cylindrical opening with a stem aperture positioned near the lower end of the bowl and oppositely positioned ear openingswithin the upper edge, a semi-circular bail seat extending from one ear opening to the other,
-of a foraminous disk having a circuuiscribing notched upstanding resilient flange arranged to be frictionally held within said cylindrical bowl opening above said stem aperture, two oppositely positioned arms secured to said disk each ending in an angular 'apertured ear, said ears arranged to seat within said openings, and a bail pivot-ally held to said ears arranged to be sprung into said bail seat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v In testimony whereof I ax my' signa ture, in presence of two witnesses.
