To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN H. Coornn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake, State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propelling Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to providing a mechanism and apparatus for the hand propulsion of boats, that will be easy of operation to the uninitiated; that will always be ready for action, and will do away with the danger of the uninitiated using oars in stormy weather when the waves are high, and the danger of the oars being mis-placed in the excitement of a wreck.
Other advantages will be readily seen by reference to the drawings and this specification.
My invention consists of an apparatus for propelling an ordinary screw by hand.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, a sufiicient portion of the'side of the boat being cut away to show the mechanism.

1 is a screw attached to the propeller shaft 2. 3 is a beveled gear keyed to the forward end of the said propelling shaft and engaging a rotating bevel gear 4 keyed to the vertical shaft 5, which carries at its upper end the fly-wheel 6, to the outer periphery of which is pivoted at 7 the pitman 8, the other end of the pitman 8 being pivoted at 9 to the rod 10. Extending transversely of the said boat are the rods 11, 11, each end of which moves lengthwise of the boat in a groove 12 prepared for the same; the said rod 10 passing through the said rods 11, 11,
and being rigidly secured to them by bolts or other suitable means through the crosses 13.

It will be noted that one of the advantages of my invention is that no matter how unfamiliar a person may be with rowing, as long as he has sufficient strength to shove the rod 11, forward and pull it backward, he will be able to impart some motion to the boat, and the greater the number of passengers the greater the motive power that can be applied to the boat.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In devices of the class described, a longitudinal rod passing through the center of a plurality of transverse rods, said transverse rods sliding in a longitudinal groove on either side of the boat, the forward end of the said first mentioned rod being pivoted to a pitman, which in turn is pivoted to a fly-wheel, attached to a shaft vertically placed in the boat, the other end of the said shaft having a beveled gear attached to a propeller shaft, and having a propeller attached to the other end thereof.
