SAFETY ATTACHMENT.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee, s, 1912.
Application filed .Tune 8, 1912. Serial No. 702,489.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, WILLJOT P. ALBEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Safety Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in fasteners, and has for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive device of the character specified, especially adapted for safe guarding a watch by attaching it to the clothing, wherein a support is provided for the watch, which will permit the watch to be taken from the pocket for inspection and returned without releasing the wat-ch from the fastener, or the fastener from the clothing.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of the improved fastener in use; Fig, 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; F ig. 3 is a front view of the holding strap extended; Fig. 4 is a front view of the strap folded; Eig. 5 is a perspective view of the pin; and Eig. 6 is a front view of a modified forni of snap hook.
The improved fastener comprises a strap 1 having a cutaway or reduced portion 2 at each side edge, extending from near one end to near the other, to form heads 3 and 4, one at each end of the strap. The head 3 is provided with a button 5 on its front face, and the head 4 with a button hole 6. The button is provided with a shank 7, reduced at its outer end at 8, to pass through an opening' in the head, and the end of the reduced portion is offset or headed at 9 to hold the button in place, the strap being en gaged on one face by the head and on the other by the annular shoulder formed by reducing the shank. The shank is also provided with a plurality of pairs of parallel longitudinal slots 10, the members of each pair being spaced apart laterally from each other. Two of the pairs are arranged one pair below the other, just below the button, and another pair near the center o-f the strap, and another pair is arranged in the head 4, at the outer end thereof, and over similar spaced parallel slots 10a arranged in head 3 .near its upper end. A pin is also provided, (Fig. 5), the said pin being bent from a single piece of resilient wire. The wire is first bent to form a coil 11, in-
termediate the ends thereof, and the por-` tions 12 and 13 on each side of the coil are then bent parallel with each other. In the present construction the coil is formed by three turns of t-he wire, and the end 12 is sharpened at its free end to form a point 14. The portion 13 is shorter than portion 12, and at the end remote from the coil, the said portion is bent at right-angles across the portion 12, as shown at 15, and backwardly parallel with the portion on the opposite side of the portion 12, as shown at 16. The portion 16 is of less length than the portion 15, andthe wire is then bent longitudinally beyond the point 14, as shown at 17, then parallel with portion 16, as shown at 18, and then parallel with portion 17, as shown at 19. The portions 16 1713 and 19 form a rectangular frame, for protecting the point, and portions 15 and 16 form a catch for the point. The portion 12 of the pin is designed to pass through the members of the pairs of slots 10, to hold the strap in position, and to secure the strap to the clothing. n
In use, the strap is passed through the ring 20 of a watch 21, and the button 5 is engaged with the buttonhole 6. Vith reference to Fig. 3 the lower end of the strap is passed through the'ring from the rear to the front, and the buttonhole is engaged with the but-ton, the button being then in front of the doubled strap.
It will be not-ed that the two slots in head 4 are so arranged that when the head 4 is superposed on head 3 the said two slots will register with the two inner slots of the four in head 3. The pin is visible, when the device is in place only between the two slots in head 4. The point of the pin is passed through the clothing 23 from the rear, that is from inside, through the slot 10a at the right of Fig. 3 from in front of the head 3, thenV through the next slot lOa'from the rear and also through the registering slot 10 of head 4. The point of the pin is now in front of head 4, and the said point is passed rearwardly through the other slot 10 of head 4, and through the registering slot of head 3. The po-int of the pin is now behind head 3, and the said point is then passed through the slot 10a at the left of Eig. 3, and through the clothing 23 from the front, and is then engaged with the cat-ch 15-16. A second pin 24, of precisely the sameconstruction may have it's point passed through the clothing 23 from ther-ear, through theslot 10 at the holder 26 as shown.
right of thepair at the center of the strap, then from the front through the other slot and the clothing to engage with its catch. The strap is thus secured to the clothing both at the end remote from the watch, and
at the end adjacent to the watch.
If desired, the strap may be provided with t-he spring snap hook 25, shown in Fig. 4. The said hook is engaged with the watch ring, and the hook is held to the strap by the The said holder has a transverse slot 27 at one end through which the strap is passed, and an o-pening 28 at the other for engagement by the hoo-k. The strap is secured to the clothing in the same manner as just described.
It will be noticed that the portion 19 of the safety pin is provided with a. cap or protector 32.
The modified form of snap hook shown in Fig. 6 comprises an open substantially rectangular frame 29, and a hook 30 swiveled in a bearing 31 at the center of one of the side members of t-he frame. side member of the frame is adapted to be engaged by the stop, and the snap hook may Y be engaged with the watch.
1. A fastener of the character specified, comprising a st-rap having its ends widened laterallyV at both sides tok form a head at each end, a button on the face ofone head,

strap having another pair of spaced parallel longitudinal slots adjacent to its center and nearer the button than the buttonhole, a second pin for engaging the slot to secure the strap to the clothing, a snap hook for engaging a watch ring, and a holding plat-e hav- The opposite f ing a slot at one end for engaging the strap and an opening at the other for engagement by the snap hook.
2. A fastener of the character specied, comprising a strap having its ends widened laterally at both sides to form a head at each end, a button on the face of one head, the other head having a buttonhole for engaging the button, said strap having four spaced slots in the head provided with Ythe button at the end thereof, and two slots at the other end registering with the central slots at the first named end when the button is engaged with the hole, a safety pin for engaging the slots at the ends to secure the strap to the clothing of t-he wearer, the stra-pv having another pair of spaced parallel longitudinal slots adjacent to its center and nearer the button than the buttonhole, a second pin for engaging the slot to secure the strap to the clothing, said strap being adapted to pass through the ring of a watch.
3. A fastener 0f the character specified, comprising a strap having its ends widened laterally at both sides to form a head at each end, a button on the face of yone head, the other head having a buttonhole for engaging the button, said strap having four spaced slots inthe head provided with the button at the end thereof, andr two slots at the other end registering with the central slots at the first named end when the button is engaged with the hole, and safety pins engaging the slots to connect the strap to the clothing.
4. A fastener of the character specified, comprising a strap having its ends widened laterally' at both sides to form a head at each end, a button on t-he face of one head, the other head having a buttonhole for engaging the button, and pins for connecting the strapv to the clothing, the strap having means at its upper end and near its center for engagement by the pins.
