ELECTRIC TIME-SWITCH.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, OLE P. NoisoM and OLE P. LUNDE, citizens of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Time-Switches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide means for automatically and abruptly opening and closing an electric switch at predetermined times.
To this end, the invention consists in the combination of a clock mechanism and switch throwing mechanism, the broad features of which are shown in Letters Patent granted to Noisom and Lindewald, and numbered respectively 907,088 and 934,340.
Specific details of construction and objects therefor will be better understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

lever 21 is arranged on the frame 19, they end portions 22 and 23 thereof extending into the space between the frame and toothed wheels 12 and 13, and into the path of movement of cam studs 24 carried by disks 25 fixed to the arbors 16 and 17. With this f construction, it will be seen that when a key or other suitable instrument is inserted into either of the sockets 27 at the outer ends of the arbors, the disk 25 and the indicator hand 29 will be turnedsimultaneously, this turning movement movingfthe stud 24 nearer or away from the adjacent end of the lever 21, as the case may be. It will be observed, however, that when the toothed wheels 12 and 13 are turned by the minute pinion 20, the setting disks 9 and 10 and the disks 25 being rigidly mounted on the same arbor will also turn, so that at the proper time, one of the studs will engage the lever 21 and operate the same, fora purpose to be present-ly described.
A rock shaft 30 carried by t-he frame 5 has a crank 31 which bears against a cam surface 32 on the lever 21, and the lever is held in the position shown by means of a leaf spring 35, so that when one end of the lever is engaged by one of the cam studs, as before described, the cam surface 32 of the lever will operate to turnv the crank 31 until the cam stud moves from engagement with the end of the'lever, whereupon the parts will be restored to their normal positions, as shown.
The rock shaft 30 has a pawl 34 which is normally arranged in the cam slot 35 of a disk 36 carried by an arbor 37. A toothed wheel 38 on the arbor 37 is connected with the toothed wheel 39 carried by an arbor 40. An arbor 41 arranged adjacent to the rock shaft 30 has a dog 42 which engages with studs 43 on the wheel 39, and a locking dog 44 carried by the arbor 30 has an end portion adapted to successively enter notches 45 in a disk 46 secured to the arbor 47 of the power spring 48, the power spring 'tor will be released and rotate until the engaging end of the locking pawl moves into the next succeeding notch.
The casing 5l of the power spring is provided with outwardly extending studs .32 arranged in spaced relation, as shown. The

so also do the wires 6() of the internal circuit. An operating rod 61 is pivoted at its lower end to the cross piece GQ of the switch blades 63. of the operating rod extends through a guide 64 on the driver 54, and is provided on its opposite sides with spaced projections G5 and 6G.
In the normal position of the parts and with the switch open, the lower projection G5 is above the guide 64- of the driver, assuming now that the mechanism has been set to turn on the lio'hts at the hour indi cated on the setting disk to the left in Fig. l. Then the hands 7 move to the hour indicated on the said setting disk.` the stud on the disk Q5 on the left in Fig. l will trip the lever 2l. whereupon the power spring and its casing will move, as before described. This movement of the casing 5l will eifect engagement between one of the studs 52 thereof and the angular bent portion of the driver, whereupon the said angular bent portion 53 will be elevated to 2. Vhen the driver is in this position, it will be seen that the spring 56 is tensioned, and when the inner end of the guide clears the lower projection. the rod 61 will be moved slightly inwardly by means of a leaf spring 6T secured to the cross piece G2, so that the inner end of the guide will be directly over the upper surface of the eX- tension 65, and when the stud 52 on the casing 5l moves from engagement with the angular bent end portion 53, the said end portion will move downwardly under action of the spring 56, thus causing the inner end of the The upper end portion the position shown by dotted lines in Fig.
The driver 5a is pivoted to a E guide to abruptly strike the extension G5 with considerable force, whereby the 1nov able portion of the switch will be forced downwardly and into engagement with the contacts 68.
Then the switch moves to closed position in the manner just described, the rod (51 will be thrown outwardly by means of a leaf spring GS secured to the cross piece 62 and the upper end portion of the rod directly above the projection (S6 will bear upon the outer end of the guide G4. Assuming now that the setting disk on the right in Fig. l of the drawings has been set to the hour indicated thereon, it will be seen that when the hands 7 move to the hour correspoiuling to that indicated on the disk, the power spring will be released and the driver moved. as before described. It will be seen that as the inner end of the driver moves upwardly, the outer end thereof will move dmvnwardly until it clears the projection (5G, whereupon the rod G1 will j be moved outwardly under the action of the to a bracket 5S 1n the lower end of the casspring (3U and into the position shown. Then the driver has been released in the manner before described, the outer end thereof will move upwardly in an abrupt manner under the action of the spring and strike the extension (36 with considerable force, whereupon the movable member of the switch will be raised to the position shown and the parts set to be operated, as before described.
The switch is held in raised position by means of a spring latch 17 secured at one end to the casing 5, and has its opposite end adapted to yieldingly engage the cross piece 62, when the switch is thrown upwardly. The engagement between the latch and cross piece is such as to overcome the combined weights of the movable part of the switch and operating rod 61.
It might here be stated that the drawings and description illustrate and describe one embodiment of our invention, and it is to be understood that we are not to be limited to the said showing and description, since it will be manifest that various changes may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit, or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention.

l. In an electric time switch, in combination with a movable switch member; of a switch opening and closing mechanism including a movable driver, andan element connected to the switch member and shift,- able thereby into position to engage with different portions of the driver.
2. In an electric time switch, in combinzv tion with a movable switch member; of a switch opening and closing mechanism including a movable driver, an element con nected'to the switch member and shiftable thereby into position to engage with different portions of the driver, and means for yieldingly holding said element in its shifted positions.
3. In an electric time switch, in combina tion with a movable switch member; of a switch opening and closing mechanism including a horizontally disposed movable driver, and means connected with the switch member and adapted to be abruptly driven in different directions alternately by the opposite ends of the driver.
4. In an electric time switch, in combination with a movable switch member, of an operating rod co-nnected thereto, of a switch opening and closing mechanism including a horizontally disposed movable drive member, of a guide member mounted on the said drive member and adapted to slidably receive the upper portion of the operating rod and to move the same in opposite directions.
5. In an electric time switch in combination with a movable switch member', of a switch opening and closing mechanism including a horizontally disposed movable driver, a spring motor, and means actuated by the motor t-o move the free end of the said driver in an upward direction, an operating rod connecting the said switch member, and means carried by the opposite end of the said driver and operating to abruptly drive the said operating rod in opposite directions.
6. In an electric time switch, in co-mbination with a movable switch member, of a switch opening and closing mechanism including a horizontally disposed movable driver, and a combined 'guide and actuating member carried by the said driver, an operating rod connecting the said switch member and having its upper portion movably mounted in said combined guide, and actuating surfaces formed on the rod and adapted to engage the said actuating member of the driver.
7. In an electric time switch, in combination with a movable switch member, of a switch opening and closing mechanism including a horizontally disposed driver,'and a combined guide and actuating member mounted on the said driver', an operating rod connecting the said switch member, the said rod having its upper portion formed to pro# vide spaced superimposed actuating surfaces adapted to alternately engage the said actuating member of the driver at different points thereon.
