To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL P. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gresson, in the county of Oambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
1 This invention relates .to railway tie plates and consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination, of parts which will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a tie plate for railway rails which is extremely simple in construction, which can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost, and which will perform the functions for which it is intended with ease and accuracy.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tie plate constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown attached "to the tie and a rail being indicated by the dotted lines. Fig.2 is acentral longitudinal sectional view of the tie plate. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the members comprising the plate. of the eo-acting member. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a modified form of the device.
As illustrated, and as preferred, n1y tie plate comprises two main parts or members designated by the numerals 1' and 2. Both of these members 1 and 2 are of a substantially rectangular form. The member 1 is provided'on its upper surface and at one end thereof with a centrally located enlargement 3 having an upwardly and inwardly projecting rail flange engaging member 7. This enlargement extends inwardly a short distance. The tie plate 1 is centrally cut away from the inner Wall 4 of the enlargement to its opposite edge, thus forming a longitudinal opening 4*. Each side wall of the opening et lies in the plane of the cone sponding slde face of the enlargement, 3 and the overlying rail flange engaging member The overlying member 7' forms, with the upper surface of the enlargement 3, a pocket 7 for the reception of the rail flange. enlargement 3 is provided with a vertically disposed rectangular opening 13 positioned outwardly with respect to the pocket 7* and adapted to receive a tie retaining spike. The member 2 is provided at each side of the member 9 where it joins the same with a vertical rectangular spike opening 15. Similar spike openings 15 are provided adjacent the opposite end of the member 2 at each side of the opening 11.-

The spike openings 15 in the member 2 are also in alinement with the openings 6 in the member 1. When the two members are assembled in this manner, as shown in Fig. 1, with a rail base resting on their upper surfaces and having its flanges received by the pockets 7 and 10.0f the two members, and spikes are driven through their respective. openings into a supporting tie, the joint thus formed is very compact and strong.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of the device; Inthis figure the clamping 'means 'comprises a pair of members17 and 18, each of these members being constructed of a single sheet of ma '.terial v The member 17 is bent-inwardly upon itself toform an overlying portion .19, and'themem issimilarly bent upon itself to form an overlying portion 20. The overlying portion 20 of the member 18 is flattened upon the said plate for a short distance and then extends upwardly at an angle to form the'rail flange engaging member 22. The overlying portion 19 of the member 17 is flattened for a short'dis-, tance and then extends upwardly at an angle to' form'the rail flange engaging member 21. When the member 18 is placed upon the member 17 and its end is slid into. the enlarged angle or pocket ofthe member 17 the rail flange engaging members are in operative position, The member 17 is provided with 'a spike receiving opening which extends upwardly through its flattened overlying portion 19- and is also provided adjacent its opposite extremity with a similar spike opening. The member 18 is provided with a spike opening which extends upwardly through the flattened overlying portion 20 and is adapted toregister with the opening in the end of the member 17 when the two members are assembled,
