Specification of Letters Patent.
Application ledApx-il 2, 1910. Serial No. 553,069.
Tov ally whom 'it may concern: l Be it known that I, ROBERT NV. Soorl'rha citizen of the United States, residlng 1n -Leeds Point,lAtlantic county, New Jersey,
have invented certain Improvements in Selvaged Knitted Webs and Making Same, of which the following is a specification.-
The object of my invention is to form, in a simple, eiiicient and inexpensive manner, a selvage upon the top df a plain knitted web, such for instance, as the top of a stocking leg.v This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to t-he accompanying drawing, in which- Figures 1 and Q represent, on an exaggerated scale, parts of two w'ebs having. selvag'es formedjhereon in accordance with my invention.
Insteadof starting the knitting operation by feeding'the knitting 'yarn to the needles in succession, in the ordinary \way,I first vfeed the knitting yarn to alternate needles, of the set, say" the odd numbered needles and on .the next course, I feed the yarn only to the even numbered needles, or to all of the needles, thu's in the diagram Fig. 1, theknitting yarn starting at has first been draw-n into a loop l by the first needle, has
then missed the second needle, been dlgawn into a loop'B by the third needle, has missed the fourth.ne evdle, been drawn into a loop l 5 -by the fifth needle, and so on, around the series of needles, being finally drawn into a loop 19@4 bythe next to last` needlel and missing the last needle. On the next course, however, it misses the first needle, is drawn, into a loop Q'by the second needle, misses the third needle, 'is drawn into a loop 4;'by the fourth needle, misses4 the fifth needle, and'- so on, finally missingthe next to last needle and being drawn into a loop 200'by.
the lastv needle. Each needle now has a.' loopy and in knitting the third course,
stitches are drawn through all of these loops,
and so pn, -the result' .eing a close, nonraveli'ng'selvage atthe'tQp-of the web. l
In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the
` yarn :is first drawn into floops by the odd .the Vstitches of av previously formed web.
I ture. fora plainl` numbered needles, as shown at l, 3', 5, 7, 9, etc., and misses the even numbered needles, butin laying,y the second course a stitch is drawn through the loop l, a loop 2 is then .drawn by the second needle, a stitch. is
ldravvny through the loop 3, a loop 4 is then drawn' by thel fourth needle, and so on, throughout the series, a stitch being drawn through loop 199, a loop 200 being drawn by the last needleand the yarn then being vdrawn through the stitch upon' the lirst needle to stait th'e third course o n the-odd .numbered needles, and then through the `-loop 2 on the second, needle to startthe second courseon the even numbered needles.
A selvaged web ofthe character described lends itself well tothe productionof a welt r hem lupon a web. by restraining the initial loops or stitches'upondsome of the needles until the desired length of web for the lwelt or hem has' been knitted, and then casting oif these restrained stitches into engagement with-the stitches of the course which is being drawn. Thestitchesupon either the odd or the even numbered needlesv are\available for such. restraint. q
-The method of knittin` which I have de scribed provides an e ective method of starting the knitting of a plain web upon the'naked needles of the machine,` that is to say, needles which donotalready contain f'/ 1. A selvage structure for a plain knitted web comprisinga course of yarn enga 'ng' the initial 'stitches of .the web in some o the wales only of said web and .another course Patented Nov. 26,1912.
