FASTENING DEVICE FOR WEIGHT-CORDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs M. HoUsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at tichmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Weight-Cords, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a simple and novel device for fastening weight cords to window sashes and has for its object to provide a device for this purpose which may be stamped by means of a suitable die from a single piece of metal, can be easily and quickly secured to the sash and will at all times effectually hold the end of the weight cord in connection therewith.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plate adapted to be fitted into an opening or recess in the sash stile, said plate having an open slot to receive the weight cord and lugs between which the knot of.
the cord is disposed, said plate being further provided with a spur on either side of the cord receiving slot to be embedded in the sash stile, and an angularly disposed foot to be secured by means of a suitable fastening screw to the sash.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical fragmentary section of a sash stile showing my improved cord attaching means applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the fastening plate.
Referring in detail to the drawing 5 designates the stile of a window sash, 6 the guide pulley for the weight cord 7 and 8 the sash weight secured to one end of said cord. The stile 5 is provided with a longitudinal groove or channel 9 to receive the other end of said weight cord, and at one end of said channel a comparatively deep hole or recess 10 of rectangular form is provided.
My improved fastening device for the weight cord as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing consists of a single metal plate generally designated by the numeral 11. This plate in blank is of a substantially diamondshaped form in plan, and one end or point of this diamond-shaped plate is bent at right angles as shown at 12 to provide a foot which rests upon one wall of the recess or opening 10 in the sash stile. At the bend of the plate whereby the foot is provided the same is formed with an opening 13 to receive a suitable fastening screw 14 which extends downwardly and inwardly into the sash stile. The other end of the diamond-shaped plate 11 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 15 which is open at its outer end, the inner end of said slot being enlarged as indicated at 16. At the open end of the slot the offset spurs 17 are formed upon the plate 11, the opposed edges of said spurs providing a flared entrance into the slot 15. Lugs 18 are centrally formed upon the longitudinal edges of the plate 11 and extend at right angles thereto.
In applying the device for the attachment of the weight cord to the sash stile, a knot is formed in the end of the cord 7 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the weight cord is then inserted into the slot 15 of the fastening plate into the enlarged inner end thereof. The knot upon the end of the cord is disposed between the lugs 18 on the plate and the plate is now inserted into the opening 10 of the sash stile, the spurs 17 being forced upwardly into the stile, and the foot 12 simultaneously moved inwardly into engagement with the opposite wall of the opening 10 until the fastening plate is disposed in said opening in a substantially vertical position. The screw 14 is now inserted and driven into the stile to rigidly secure the plate in position. When thus disposed, it will be observed that the knot on the end of the cord is positioned between the base wall of the opening 10 and the inner face of the plate 11.
By means of my improved fastening device as above described, it will be readily seen that the end of the cord is securely held in position in the opening 10 of the sash stile while at the same time the cord can be easily and quickly removed in the event that the same becomes broken or is otherwise unfit for further use and it is necessary to replace the same with a new cord.
As the device consists of but a single sheet of metal, it will be obvious that the same may be manufactured at very small cost, and

The combination with the sash stile having an opening therein, of a cord fastening plate having a longitudinal open ended slot to receive the cord and spurs on either side of the slot to be embedded in the stile, said cord having a knot on its end, and angularly disposed lugs formed on the plate and disposed on opposite sides of the cord knot.
2. The combination with the sash stile having a cord receiving recess therein, of a fastening plate for the cord provided with a longitudinal open ended slot having a flared entrance, a contracted intermediate portion and an enlarged inner end to receive the cord, saidcord being provided with a knot upon its end, and lugs formed on the plate and extending at right angles to the body thereof disposed upon opposite sides of the knot, a right angularly extending foot formed upon one end of'the plate and having an opening therein to receive a fastening screw whereby the same is secured to the sash stile.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a fastening device for sash weight cords consisting of a metal plate having a longitudinally extending open ended slot enlarged at its inner end to receive the cord and provided with offset spurs at the outer end of said slot, the opposed edges of the spurs forming a flared entrance to the slot, lugs formed upon the longitudinal edges of the plate and extending at right angles thereto between which the cord knot is adapted to be disposed, and a right angularly disposed attaching foot formed on one end of the plate provided with a screw receiving opening for the attachment of the same to a sash stile.
