. California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and
I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and eXact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
rIhis invention relates to improvements in vehicles and particularly to a rein holder to be attached to such vehicle, the object of the invention being to produce a means adapted to carry the reins attached to the horse or horses drawing such vehicle, whereby when the driver stops or drops said reins, they will be automatically held tight and not be permitted to drop loose, which often results in the dropping of the same to the ground or frightening the horses, or becoming caught under the horses tail or otherwise.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly elfective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line :cof Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of two spaced rollers. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a post holder.
Referring now more particularly to the Icharacters of reference on the drawings, I rst provide a post holder, of any type desired, but more especially as shown in Figs. l and 2 and in a modified view shown in Fig. 4. In Figs. 1 and 2, this post holder comprises two centrally orificed blocks 1 having a connecting bar 2 and a hinged latch 3 adapted to be secured to some convenient part of the cross bar under the whifle-tree or the dashboard of the vehicle. As an example of this securing means we will consider the member 3a as a cross bar under the whitHetree and to secure the member 2 thereto the member 3 would be turned baci( and the member 32t inserted into the stationary portion 3b of the member 3 and then the member 3 would be turned over the member 3 and secured in such position by means of the pin 3C. The supporting posts 4 of the device are adapted to be inserted in the orfices of the blocks 1 and fixed at any desired height by means of set screws. 0n the Lipper end of the posts 4 is a frame having a crossbar 7 provided with a center pin 8.
In practice the reins 9 project over the member 7 o-ne on each side of pin 8 and then between rollers l0 and l1. The roller 10 is disposed in said frame 6 and the roller 11 is held in spring pressed arms 12 which causes the roller 11 to bear in frictional contact against the" reins 9 and the roller 10, which structure holds said reins taut rew gardless of whether the driver drops or throws them down. Hinged as at 13 to the frame 6 is a frame 14 projecting outwardly and being provided with a sliding eXtension at its outer end, such sliding extension being provided with two spaced rollers 16 and 17. This frame 14 is supported by proA jecting members 18 hinged to the posts 4 at 19 and having a center hinge 20 whereby such frame 1%15 may be lowered if not desired for use, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When desired for use, however, the frame 14 is projected outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and the reins then go between rollers 16 and 17 and are held up away from the horse so that it is impossible for such horse to get the reins under his tail, and the sliding extension 15 is for the purpose of adjusting the length of such frame according to whether the horse is close or farther away from the vehicle.
A projecting rod 21 projects across from the post 4 to prevent the reins fromL dropping outside of the structure above described, and also to hold the frame 14-15 from swinging when it is folded into its downward position.
In Fig. 4 is shown a modified form of holder for the posts 4. In this form a plate 22 may be bolted to the dashboard and is provided with arms 23 having collars 24 adapted to receive such posts 4.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device vas substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
lVhile this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A device of the character described comprising au upwardly projecting frame, means in said frame for holding reins by friction, an outwardlyv projecting frame hinged to said first named frame, a means for raising or lowering said last named v frame, as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising an upwardly projecting frame7 means in said frame for holding reins by friction, an outwardly projecting frame hinged to said first named frame, a sliding extension on said outwardly projecting frame, two rollers spaced apart on the outer end of said extension frame,V and a means forraising and lowering said projecting and eX- tension frames, as described.
3. A device of the character described comprising an upwardly projecting frame, means in said frame for holding reins by friction, an outwardly projecting frame on said first named frame7 a sliding extension on said outwardly projecting frame, and a rein supporting means on the outer end of said extension frame7 as described.
