HAND-STAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 17, 1912. Serial No. 678,162.
To all whom it may concern:
new and improved stamping device morev especially designed for stamping hams and other meats or other articles, and arranged to permit the operator to conveniently handle the device with a view of accurately stamping a large number of articles in a comparatively short time.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a stamp held on a shank connected by a link with a handled frame on which is fulcrumed a hand lever having a sliding connection with the said shank to impart a swinging motion to the stamp, and an inking pad adapted to be engaged by the said stamp to ink the same.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ignprovement with the stamp in stamping posi tion and the inking pad and its trough shown in section on the line 11 of Fig. 2.

line 2-2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged face view of the impression of the stamp.
The stamping device is mounted on a suitably constructed frame A provided with a handle B adapted to be taken hold of by the operator for manipulating the device in a manner hereinafter more fully described. A hand lever C is fulcrumed at C. on the frame A and the said hand lever is provided with a fingerpiece C extending in close proximity to the handle B so as to enable the operator having hold of the said handle B with one hand to manipulate the finger piece C with the thumb of this hand to impart aswinging motion to the hand lever C. The lever C is pivotally connected with a slide D mounted to slide on a shank E pivotally connected by a pivot pin F with a link F fulcrumed at F on the frame A. The free end of the stem E is provided with a socket E engaged by the stem G of a stamp G bearing a suit-able legend, such as indicated in Fig. 3. A set screw H screwing in the socket E engages the stem G so as to secure the stamp G in position, it being understood that when the set screw H is loosened the stem G can be removed and replaced by another one, and the stem G of the stamp G can be adjusted in the socket E to move the face of the stamp G into .the desired position and relatively to an inking pad I used for inking the face of the said stamp.
The inking pad I is of felt or other fabric material and forms a covering on a hollow roller J provided in its peripheral face with spiral depressions J having apertures or perforations J through which the ink can pass from the inside of the roller J to the depressions J and to the pad I so as to keep the latter saturated with ink. The inner end of the roller J is provided with a long bearing J (see Fig. 2) mounted to turn on a pipe K extending from a supply chamber L arranged in the bottom of a supply tube or reservoir L secured to the frame A and containing ink. The chamber L is connected by a valve seat L with the supply tube or reservoir L, and the said valve seat L is controlled by a valve 0,
preferably of conical form, and provided with an upwardly-extending valve stem 0 passing upward in the tube L. The stem 0 has a threaded portion 0 screwing in a nut L supportedby a spider L from the wall of the tube L so that when the stem 0 is turned in one direction the valve 0 is raised and moved off its seat L to allow ink to pass from the tube L by way of the open valve seat L into the chamber L from which the ink can pass by way of the pipe K into the hollow roller J. When the stem 0 is turned in an opposite direction the valve 0 moves to its seat to close the same and thus disconnect the chamber L from the supply tube L. The upper end of the stem 0 is guided in a cap L screwing on the upper end of the tube L, and on the forked end 0 of the stem 0 is pivoted a handle 0 adapted to be swung into horizontal position for forming a convenient handhold for the operator in turning the stem 0 to move the valve 0 to or from its seat as above described. When the handle 0 is not in use it is swung into vertical position to allow of unscrewing the cap L and removing the same from the tube 'L to permit of refilling the tube with ink whenever it is necessary to do so. Thus the cap L can be removed without removing the valve O and its stem 0 from the tube.
The outer end of the roller J is provided with a trunnion J journaled in the outer end of a trough P made approximately semicircular in cross section and inclosing the lower portion of the inking pad I so as to retain any ink that may drop off the said pad I. The trough P is hung at its inner end on the pipe K and is provided at the under side with a supporting bar P adapted to be fastened by a fastening device, suchv as a bolt and clip Q, Q, to an extension L held on the lower end of the tube L. A spring arm R bears against the bar P and is fastened in place by the screw Q.
The pivot pin F previously mentioned projects at one side to form a stop adapted to engage the top of the frame A so as to limit the downward swinging motion of the link 1*. The upward and rearward swinging motion of the link F is limited by the lug F (see Fig. 2) projecting transversely from the link F and adapted to abut against the shoulder A of the frame A. The sliding movement of the slide D on the shank E is limited in a downward direction by the socket E and in an upward direction by the flattened portion E formed on the said shank E.
The operation is as follows: In using the device, the operator takes hold with one hand of the handle B, the thumb of this hand engaging the finger piece G which when pressed downward causes an upward swinging of the stamp G until it extends in an approximately vertical position to permit the user to move the face of the stamp G into contact with the ham, meat or other article to be stamped. As the face of the stamp is inked an impression is made on the article, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. It is understood that while the operator holds the fingerpiece C depressed the entire device may be moved by the user into any desired position for engaging the face of the stamp G with the article whether the latter is hung up or lying down or is otherwise supported, and the operator by having one hand free can readily use this hand for manipulating the article, if necessary, to insure a proper impression thereof. hen the operator has made the impression as described the fingerpiece G is released so that the stamp G swings downward by its own weight and in doing so its face passes over the top sur face of the inking pad I (see dotted lines in Fig. 1) to supply the face of the stamp G with ink, and on the operator again pressing the lingerpiece C an upward swinging motion is given to the stamp to again move the face of the stamp G over the body I to insure a thorough inking thereof for making the next impression as above explained.
By providing the device with a reservoir L for containing ink and supplying the said ink periodically to the roller J on periodically opening the valve 0 the device can be used for a long time without requiring refilling of the reservoir L with ink.
By arranging the roller J with the perforated depressions J the ink is readily dis tributed to the pad I so as to keep the same saturated with ink and as the inking pad I is in the form of a roller it readily turns on being engaged with the swinging face of the stamp G.
It is understood that by mounting the rod E on the link F the stamp G can readily pass with its under face over the surface of the inking pad I to insure a thorough inking of the entire face;

A stamping device, comprising a frame having a handle, an inking pad supported from the said frame, a stamp adapted to engage the said pad, a shank carrying the said stamp, a link pivotally connecting the) said shank with the said frame, and a hand lever pivoted on the frame'an cl having a sliding connection with the said shank.
2. A stamping device, comprising a frame having a handle, an inking pad supported from the said frame, a stamp adapted to engage the said pad, a shank carrying the said stamp, a link pivotally connecting the said shank with the said frame, a hand lever pivoted on the frame and having a sliding connection with the said shank, and a stop pin on the said link and adapted to engage the said frame to limit the swinging motion of the link.
3. A stamping device, comprising a frame, a manuallycontrolled swinging stamp mounted on the frame, a supply tube mounted on the said frame and adapted to contain ink, a supply chamber for receiving ink from the supply tube, a valve for controlling the supply of ink from the supply tube to the supply chamber, a pipe extending from the supply chamber, a hollow roller into which discharges the said pipe, the hollow roller having perforated depressions, and an inking pad of fabric material forming a covering for the hollow roller and adapted to be engaged by the said stamp.
4:. A stamping device, comprising a frame,
a manually-controlled stamp. mounted to swing on the said frame, a supply tube attached to the said frame and provided with a bottom chamber having avalve seat, a manually-controlled valve extending in the said tube and controlling the said valve seat, a pipe extending from the said chamber, a hollow roller having one end mounted on the said pipe, the said roller having its periphery provided with perforated depressions, an inking pad of fabric material forming a covering for the said roller and adapted to be engaged by the said stamp, and a trough supported by the said supply tube and provided with a bearing for the other end of the said roller.
5. A stamping device, comprising a frame, a manually-controlled stamp mounted to swing on the said frame, a supply tube attached to the said frame and provided with a bottom chamber having a valve seat, a manually-controlled valve extending in the said tube and cont-rolling the said valve seat, a pipe extending from the said chamber, a
hollow roller having one end mounted on the said pipe, the said roller having its periphery provided with perforated depressions, an inking pad of fabric mate-rial forming a covering for the said roller and adaptthe frame and provided with a finger piece extending in proximity to the handle, a link fulcrunied on the frame, a shank pivotally connected at one end with said link, a slide pivotally connected, with the lever and mounted to slide on said shank, a socket at the free end of said shank, a stamp having a stem adjustably engaging the said socket,
and an inking pad supported from the said frame and adapted to be engaged by the said stamp.
