Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 23, 1912.` Serial No. 679,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUNTER It. BowERs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Herminie, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railings or Guards for Pit-Cages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to railings or guards for pit cages, and the primary object of my invention is to furnish a pit cage or elevator cage with novel railings or guards that can be easily and quickly elevated when a landing is reached by the pit car or cage.
Another object of this invention is to provide a safety device that is durable, easy to manipulate and highly eliicient for preventing persons and animals from leaving the pit cage until a landing is reached.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein there is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements to be hereinafter referred to are susceptible to such variations and modications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a pit cage in accordance with this invent-ion, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan of a portion of one of the railings or guards.
A pit cage in accordance with this invention comprises a rectangular frame 1 supporting a platform 2. -The sides of the frame 1 are provided with oppositely disposed uprights 3 and these uprights are connected, adjacent to the upper ends thereof, by roof frames 4 that support a roof 5.
The uprights 3 are braced by angularly disposed braces 6 arranged at the sides Of the frame 1 and having the lower ends thereof secured to the frame 1 at the ends of the platform 2. The braces 6, intermediate the ends thereof, are connected to the uprights 3 by filler blocks 7, and the outer sides of said braces are provided with angle brackets j vThe inner side of one of the uprights?) is provided with straps 11 and 12 vertically alining with the off-set portion 10 of the hand hold 9 of said upright. Movably mounted in the straps 11 and -12 is a shiftable bar 13 and pivotally connected to the lower end of said bar by a pin 14 are the confronting inner ends of fulcrumed levers 15. 'Ihese levers are pivotally connected by pins 16 to bearings 17, carried by the platform 2, adjacent to the uprights 3. The outer ends of the fulcrumed levers 15 are reduced to provide handles 18, and said handles extend through guides 19 carried by the inner sides of the braces 6 and operated by a person upon the car.
Arranged in the braces 6, adjacent to the liller blocks 7, are pivots 20 carrying on their inner ends blocks 21 provided with wrist pins 22. Pivotally mounted upon the wrist pins 22 are links 23 that have the upper ends thereof pivotally connected by a pin 24 to the shiftable bar 13. The mechanism just described is used at one side of the pit cage and at the opposite side the pivots 20 are simply used. Connected to the outer ends of the blocks 21 are the arms 25 of rails or guards 26, said arms being olf-set, as at 27 to rest upon the upper edges of the brackets 8. When a landing or the top of a pit or elevator shaft is reached, one of the handles 18 can be gripped and elevated, thereby lowering the bar 13, rocking the blocks 21 and elevating the rails or guards 26.
The railing or guard herein described is applicable to t-he cars of inclines, and the entire device is made of strong and durable metal.
What I claim is 1. In combination a platform alining uprights carried thereby, a pair of angularly disposed braces connected to each upright and to the platform, pivots fixed to the uprights of each pair, brackets carried by said braces, inwardly extending blocks mounted upon each of said pivots, railings having side arms supported by said brackets and connected to the outer ends of said blocks, a vertically movable bar carried by one of said uprights and means for connecting a pair of said blocks to the bar and means connected to said bar for shifting it to elevate said railings.
2. In combination a platform alining uprights carried thereby, a pair of angularly disposed braces connected to each upright and to the platform, pivots fixed to the uprights of each pair, brackets carried by said braces, inwardly extending blocks mounted upon each of said pivots, railings havingy side arms supported by said brackets and connected to the outer end of said blocks, a vertically movable bar carried by one of said uprights, a pair of links connecting the upper end of said bar to two of said blocks, and a pair of operating levers having their inner ends pivotally connected to the lower ends of said bar and said levers being pivotally supported upon said platform.
3. In combination a platform alining uprights carried thereby, a pair of angularly disposed braces connected to each upright and to the platform, pivots iXed to the uprights of each pair,brackets carriedY by said Y braces, inwardly extending blocks mounted upon each of said pivots, railings having side arms supported by said bracketsand connected to the outer ends of said blocks, a vertically movable bar carried by one of said uprights, a pair of links connecting the upper end of said bar to two of said blocks, and a pair of operating levers having their inner ends pivotally connected to the lower ends of said bar and said levers being pivotally supported upon said platform, and means carried by a pair of said braces for guiding the outer end of said levers.
