To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J Than, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the front end draft appliance of locomotives.
- The primary purpose of the invention is to remove sparks and cinders which are inevitably drawn through the boiler tubes by the blast of the exhaust, and yet permit a direct passage of the products of combustion from the boiler tubes to the stack. This action is secured by the conjoint operation of a system of battle plates and a drum screen of particular form, the screen being so designed as to present a maximum surface which surface is continuously subjected to the scouring action of cinders carried by the products of combustion. In this way the screen is kept clean and the cinders instead 1 of being drawn against the screen are thrown forward across the screen and fall to the bottom of the smoke box, out of the path of the draft current. From this point they are returned to the fire box by means of a steam ejector receiving steam from a live steam passage in the saddle when the engine throttle-is open.
Additional features of the invention reside in the use of horizontal and vertical guide partitions for the prevention of what are technically known as a cross draft and overdraft. This being the general principle of my invention I shall now describe a preferred embodiment of the same illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure '1 is a longitudinal vertical. section of the front end of a locomotive showing my draft appliances attached; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on the line a-a of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the screen drum on the line b?) of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the'line c-0 of Fig. 1; and Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate front cover plates adapted to be substituted for that indicated in the remaining figures.

9 is the smoke stack, and 10 is the draft pipe associated therewith. The draft pipe 10 and exhaust pipe 6 are alined as is usual in locomotive construction. The draft pipe 10 is provided with a flaring rim 11, at its lower end, and this flaring rim 11 is within a drum 12 mounted in the smoke box and supported therein by its attachment to the draft pipe 10 and by brackets 13, as shown. This drum is substantially coaxial with the smoke box. The rear head 14 of the drum and the rear part 15 of its cylindrical. wall are of imperforate plate. The exhaust nozzle 6 and the draft pipe 10 enter through the Walls of the drum in this rear imperforate portion. The front head of the drum consists of an annular imperforate portion 16, the opening through which is closed by aplate 17 detachablyconnected thereto in any suitable manner. Other plates 17 and 17 of netting or perforated plate respectively may be substituted for the cover plate 17 (see Figs. 5 and 6), this change being made to adapt locomotives for different classes of fuel. The size and number of openings of the mesh are dependent upon the character of the fuel as will be apparent. The front part 18 of the cylindrical walls of the drum is made of wire net or other foraminous material and the front half of the drum is divided into two parts by a vertical partition 19 extending rearwardly to the front edge of the flaring rim 11. The purpose of this plate is to equalize the draft through the drum on opposite-sides of the smoke box.
At the rear of the drum and extending between its rear head and the tube sheet is a vertical partition 20 whose purpose is to prevent cross draft by dividing the tube sheet into equal areas and atleast partially producing two separate paths for the products of combustion from the tube sheet to the interior of the drum. The drum may be and preferably is, slightly flattened at the top as at 21 to give a convenient mode of attachment of the draft pipe 10 to the drum. Adjacent this flat top portion of the drum and extending horizontally from one side of the smoke box to the other is a partition 22 which extends from the tube sheet forward over the top of the drum and prevents whatis known as overdraft. An annular bafiie plate 24 extends downward from the partition 22 with 'which it is connected at 23. This baffle plate 24 is closely in contact with the smoke box except at 25 at the bottom of the smoke box where it is cut away to. permit cinders if deposited in the rear portion of the smoke box to be drawn forward by the draft and ultimately discharged by the ejector as will be described. The bafiie plate 24 follows approximately the line of junction of the solid and the foraminous portions of the drum and its inner edge is spaced from the drum a short distance, the amount of such spacing being dependent upon the characteristics of the locomotive to which the invention is applied.
At the forward end of the smoke box, and
\ at one side thereof is mounted a steam blast ejector 27 whose discharge pipe 28 leads to the fire box (not shown). The ejector 27 takes steam through a pipe 29 which enters one of the live steam passages in the saddle 5, so that the ejector operates whenever the locomotive throttle is open, as will be readily understood. The suction pipe 30of the ejector extends into the smoke box and downwardly to a point 31 at the bottom and near the front end thereof. When the enthe forward end of the gine is running on steam the ejector is constantly operating to draw cinders up through the pipe 30 and discharge them through the pipe 28 to the fire box. In this way the smoke box is kept free from cinders and it therefore becomes possible to arrest the cinders in the smoke box rather than to attempt to break them up to a sufficiently small size to discharge safely from the stack as has been the practice heretofore. When the engine is running; the exhaust through the nozzle 6 will draw products of combustion through the boiler tubes, the baffle plate 20 serving to equalizev the draft on the two sides of the boiler and the plate 22 confinmg the draft to the lower portion of the smoke box. The products of combustlon after leaving the boiler tubes pass for- Wardly around the sides of the drum and through the annular space 26 adjacent the walls thereof.- Cinders and sparks drawn through the tube are consequently thrown across and obliquelyagainst the netting 18 producmg a constant scouring action which tends to keep the netting free and open. The momentum of the cinders causes them to pass across the netting and strike against I smoke box where, as they are out of the line of draft through the smoke box, they fall to the bottom of the box and are then discharged .by the ejector and dellvered to the fire box. The products of combustion thus freed from the cinders and sparks pass through the netting 18 and are discharged through the stack in the usual manner. The partition plate 19 serves to equallze the flow through thenetting at opposite sides of the drum. The opening 25 permits such cinders as have fallen to the bottom of the smoke box at the rear of the baflie plate 24 to be gradually drawn to the 17 I adapt the device for the burning of lignites or kindred fuels which can not be satisfactorily burned when an imperforate cover plate is used at this point.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a draft arrangement for locomotives the combination with .the usual boiler and smoke box, of a drum mounted in the smoke box substantially coaxially therewith, said drum having imperforate heads and having cylindrical walls made up of a forward foraminous port-ion and a rearward imperforate portion; a stack to withdraw gases from said drum; a blast pipe discharging, through said drum and adapted to create a draft out through said stack; a vertical guide partition extending between the rear head of the drum and the tube sheet of the boiler; a vertical partition longitudinally dividing the forward portion of the interior of the drum; a partition extending across the smoke box from the tube sheet of the boiler over the top of the drum;
an annular bafile plate extending inward from the walls of the smoke box to within a short distance of the walls of the drum; and an ejector to withdraw cinders from the smoke box.
2. In a draft arrangement for locomotives, the combination with the usual boiler and smoke box, of a drum mounted in the smoke box substantially coaxially therewith, said drum having imperforate heads and having cylindrical walls made up of a forward foraminous portion and a rearward imperforate portion; a stack to withdraw gases from the said drum; a blast pipe discharging through said drum and adapted to create a draft out through said stack; and an annular baflie plate extending inward from the walls of the. smoke box to within a short distance of the walls of the drum, said baflie plate following approximately the line of junction of the imperforate and foraminous portions of the drum.
3. In a draft arrangement for locomotives, the combination with the usual boiler and smoke box, of a drum mounted in the smoke box substantially coaxially therewith,

In a draft arrangement for locomotives the combination with the usual boiler and smokebox, of a drum mounted in the smoke box substantially coaxially therewith, said drum having imperforate heads and having cylindrical walls made up of a forward formanious portion and a rearward imperforate portion; a stack to withdraw gases from said drum; a blast pipe discharging into' said drum and adapted to create a draft out through said stack; a ver tical guide partition extending between the rear head of the drum and the tube sheet of the boiler; a partition extending across the smoke box from the tube sheet of the boiler over the top of the drum; and an annular baffle plate extending inward from the walls of the smoke box to within a short distance of the walls of the drum.

8. In a draft arrangement for locomotives, the combination with the usual boiler and smoke box, of a drum mounted inthe smoke box substantially coaxially therewith, said drum having an imperforate rear head and being adapted to receive interchangeable front heads, and having cylindrical walls made up of a forward foraminous portion and a rearward imperforate portion; a stack to withdraw gases from said drum; a blast pipe discharging into said drum and adapted to. create a draft out through said stack; an annular battle plate between'the walls of the smoke box and drum approximately following the line of junction of the imperforate and foraminous portions of the drum and adapted to confine the flow of gases to a stream adjacent the walls of the drum; and an ejector to withdraw cinders from the smoke box andoperative only when the engine is running.
9. In a draft apparatus for locomotives, the combination'with the usual boiler and smoke box, of a drum having walls of foraminous material, and mounted in the smoke box; a stack adapted to conduct the products of combustion from said drum; a blast pipe adapted to discharge through the drum to create a draft out through the stack; and an annular baffleplate between the drum and the walls of the smoke box, adapted to direct the products of combustion flowing through said box in a stream across and close to the foraminous portions of the drum.
10. In a draft apparatus for locomotives, the combination with the usual boiler and smoke box, of a drum having walls of fonous portion and a rearward imperfor'ate Y rality of interchangeableheads for the front raminous material, and mounted in the smoke box; a stack adapted to conduct the products of combustion from said drum; a blast pipe adapted to discharge through the drum to create a draft out through the stack;. an annular bafiie plate between the drum and the walls of the smoke box, adapted to direct the products of combustion flowing through said box in a stream across and close to the foraminous portions of the drum; a vertical partition extending between the front head of the boiler and the rear end of the drum; and a horizontal par-v tition extending across'the smoke box, from the front head of the boiler over the drum.
11. In a draft arrangement for locomotives, the combination with the usual boiler and smoke box, of a drum mounted in the smoke box substantially coaxially therewith, said drum having cylindrical walls'made upof a forward foraminous portion and a rearward imperforate portion, and having an imperforate rear head and an open front adapted to receive a removable head; a plurality of interchangeable heads for the front end of the drum; a stack to withdraw gasesfrom the drum; a blast pipe discharging through said drum and adapted to create a draft out through said stack; and an annu-- lar baflie plate approximately following the .line of junction of the imperforate and foraminous portions of the drum and adapted to confine the flow of gas to a stream adjacent its walls.
12. In a draft arrangement for locomotives, the combination with the usual boiler and smoke box, of a d'rum mounted in the smoke box substantially coaxially therewith, said drum having cylindrical -Walls made up of a forward foraminous portion and a rearward imperforate portion, and having an imperforate rear head and an open from: adapted to receive a removable head; a pluend of the drum; a stack to withdraw gases from the drum; a blast pipe discharging through saiddrum and adapted to create a draft out through said stack; an annular baflie plate approximately following-the line of junction of the imperforate and foraminous portions of the drum and adapted to confine the flow of gas to a stream adjacent its walls; and a vertical partition extending between the tube sheet of the boiler and the rear head of the drum.
13. In a draft arrangement for locomo-,
