Description

JOHN EVANS, CE NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
"Letters PatetNo.'104,440, dated June 21, 1870.
`IMPROVED DIE ron roRGmeEARs ron CARRIAGE-SPRING HEADS.
The Schedule' referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of 'che same To ail whom'it'pmy concern.-
'Be it knownfthat I, JOHN EVANS, of NewHayen, inthe county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have inveuteda new Improvementin Dies for Forging EarsforCarriage-springHeads; "and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with thc accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to bea full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute partof this specilication, andrepresentiu- Figure 1,` a perspective vew of the die;
Figure 3,' a perspective view of the follower;
Figure 3, a top view ofthe die and in Figure 4, the blank previousto the operation;
Figure 5, the blank after the operation.
p This invention relates to an improvement in dies for forgingyears for carriage-spring heads, the object being to prepare the ears for attachment to the springs previous to welding, that is to say, toV form n'bs upon one side as aguide for` the proper relative position, lahglalso as a means `for attachment to the heated spring', by compressing thel said ribs into the .heated metal; an i s l, The invention consists in a die in which grooves are formed `corresponding totheproposed ribs outhe ear, combined with a follower for striking the metal' int-o t'll die. M j r A isA the die, and y B, .the follower. p 1; l
`Through the die Afa recess, C, is formed, and on the follower a projecting end, l), corresponding to and s0 as to work freely in the said recess, Vserving as a guide for the follower.
The die formed the shape of the blank, and with a longitudinal groove, a, and transverse groove d, corresponding tothe ribs required on the ear, and the perforation c with a corresponding guide-pin, E, on the follower.
The blank is `first formed as seen in fig. 4,A preparatory to being set Ainto the die, it being thicker at that part where the rib is to be forn1cd,iu order to give the requisite metal. I
Heated and laid into the die, thefollower descends, the pin'Erpassing through the perforation in thje ear to preserve the perforation, the follower strikes hard upon the metal, forcing it into the grooves, and producing the blank seen iu fig, 5, with J:he ribs a and d.
It will be observed that right and left dies are essential in order to produce the ears required for each head.
I claim as my invention-'- ',lhe improved die A and follower B,'the former having the recess C, longitudinal groove a, transverse groov'e d, and perforation c, and the latter having the projecting end D and the" piu E, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN EVANS. Witnesses:
