To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVELLINGTON P. IN- TER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Feed-Cock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying .drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to feed or drip cocks for use in any connection where a regular and uniform dripping or feeding of a liquid is desired. In the use of feeds of this character considerable difficulty is experienced by reason of an improper feeding of the liquid under varying conditions of use. This is particularly noticeable in carbureter feeds as an improper feeding of the gasolene thereto causes numerous troubles, such as a flooding too weak a mixture, irregular explosions, etc.
The object of my invention is the provision of a liquid feeding means of this character, which is simple and economical in its construction and adapted to obviate the objections incident to the use of the means heretofore employed for such purpose, thus enhancing the practicability and commercial value thereof.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which is a central longitudinal section of the invention in connection with a source of liquid supply.
This application is a division of an application filed by me on July 30, 1910, Ser. No. 57 1,74 1, and which has matured into Patent No. 1,009,205, dated Nov. 21, 1911.v
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a drip or feed cock embodying the features of my invention, which may be attached to a float-chamber 2, or to any other suitable source of liquid supply. The cock 1 is provided with a throat portion 3, which is in communication with the source of liquid supply, and may be termed the supply passage of the cock, and with the throat portion 4, which is in valve-control1ed communication with the passage 3 and may be termed the drip-passage of the cock. The drip-passage 1 is open to the atmosphere at both ends, or at opposite sides of its point of communication with the passage 3, and is shown in the present instance as having its upper end portion extending at an incline past the lower or outlet end portion of the passage 3, whereby liquid may have a gravity or pressure flow through the latter passage. The flow of liquid from one to the other of said passages is controlled by a needle-valve 5, which is threaded, in the present instance, through a side of the cock and extends across the passage 3 with its valve end working in a communicating opening 6 between the two passages to close or open it to a predetermined extent. Vhile the opening 6 may be placed at any convenient point relative to the passage 3, it is important that it communicate with the passage 4 through a side wall thereof intermediate its ends. The stem of the valve 5 carries a finger 7 which coacts with a pivoted stop 8 at a predetermined point in each revolution thereof to stop the rotation of the valve. The valve is adapted upon each complete turn to permit an emission of a predetermined number of drops per minute from the cock.
It is found in practice that the opening of the passage 4 to the atmosphere above its point of communication with the opening 6 not only renders the cock more efficient and regular in its dropping or uniform feeding action than cocks heretofore employed but also that the efficiency is enhanced by prolonging the passage 41 for a considerable dis tance above the opening 6.
The float chamber 2, which in reality forms a continuation of the supply passage 3 of the cock, has communication with the interior of a tank 9 or other suitable source ofliquid supply, in the present instance, through a tube or passage 10. A float 11 is mounted in the chamber 2 and has a needle valve part 12 projecting therefrom and seating in a portion of the passage 10 to close communication between the chamher 2 and the source of liquid su ply when the liquid is at a predetermined height in said chamber.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific form, construction or arrangement of the parts thereof except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. A liquid feed means having a floatcontrolled feed and having multiple passages therein, one passage being in lateral communication with a supply passage and being open to the atmosphere above and below its point of communication with said supply passage.
2. A liquid feed means having a supply passage a portion of which is enlarged, and having a drip-passage in communication with said supply passage, said drip-passage being open to the atmosphere above and be low its point of communication with the supply passage, a float valve in the enlarged portion of said supply passage to control the feed of liquid thereto, and a valve for controlling the communication between said passages.
3. A liquid feed means having a supply passage and drip-passage, said drip-passage being in communication intermediate its ends with the supply passage and having its ends open to the atmosphere, a needle-valve controlling the communication between said passages, and a float-valve controlling the liquid feed through said supply passage.
4. A drip-cock having a passage in floatvalve controlled communication with a source of liquid supply and a drip-passage open at opposite ends to the atmosphere and in valve controlled communication with said first passage.
