SELF-INKING DEVICE FOR STAMPING EGGS.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnamacs E. Caook, a subject of Great Britain, residing at Hornitos, in the county of Mariposa, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Inking Devices for Stamping Eggs; and I. do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of re erence marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements for marking or stamping machines and particularly to egg markers or stampers, the object of the invention being to produce a self inking rotary marking device whereby eggs, or in fact anything may be marked or stamped with any designation desired.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device, and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
Ihese objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the marker in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same in open operative position. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the marking wheel or drum. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the end of a finger operated lever. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of a marking wheel or drum showing slots to receive date type. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the date type. Fig. 8 18 a top lan view of a retaining Wire spring mem er.
Referring now more particularly to the characters .of reference on the drawings, I first provide a containing frame 1 having a thumb and finger handle member 2. J ournaled in the outer end of the member 1 as at 3, is a marking wheel or drum 4 having disposed on its outer rim a ty e late 5 of metal or rubber as may be desir carrying type or letters 6 designating whatever 18 to be stamped or printe upon the object to be Specification of Letters Patent.

Disposed within the wheel or drum 4 is a band sprin 7 secured at one point as at 8 to the member 1, which spring maintains thedrum 4 in such normal position as to keep the type late 5 normally under a curved inking pa 9 mounted in a curved frame 10 provided with a projecting operating lever 11 fulcrumed in the frame 12, which frame 12 is fulcrumed on the frame 1 as at 13, there being a spring 14 pressing against the lever 11 to keep the pad 9 normally closed over the type plate 5 to ink the type 6.
On the outer end of the lever 11 is an operating thumb member 15 whereby the user of the device may press such member 15 to cause the lever 11 to lift the pad 9 off of the type 6 and then the wheel or drum 4 may rotate by pressing the ty e 6 against the object to be stamped and this will cause the entire face of the type to move over the object, thus impressing whatever designation is desired thereon. Then when the operation is complete and the drum 4 is removed from the surface of the object which is being stamped, the spring 7 returns the drum and type plate 5 to normal position underneath the inkin pad 9. However, as one inking may do for several impressions from the type 6, I provide a slot 16 in the end of the member 15 adapted to receive a rod 17 havin" a lug 18 on its upper end which holds the member 15 in lowered position whereby several impressions may be taken from off the type 6 before it is again %nked8by releasing the lever 11 from this n order to prevent an undue return movement of the drum 4 and to maintain it in a fixed normal osition I provide a projecting stop mem er 19 on its side adapted to engage a recess 20 in the member 1, which engaging point is the limit of backward movement which the drum 4 should make in bringing the type plate back under the inking pad. Since the spring 7 might lose some of its tension, I provide a plurality of holes 21 5 need apart to receive the member 19 at. different points in order to compensate for any loss of tension in such spring 7.
Fig. 4 shows the marking drum with merely a name stam ed thereon which will be used if desired, but if name and date both are desired then I will use a form shown in Fig. 6 wherein the type plate 5 has slots 22 to receive removable date type,
eer AVAILABLE one 2% whereby the date can be changed as desired, and in order to hold this date type rigid during operation I provide a spring wire member 25 secured in the drum 4 and projecting through a slot 24 and pressing against the type 23 to hold them rigid during operation but. when it is desired to remove such type, then the wire member 25 may be pressed outward with a knife or similar instrument and the type 23 will then readily fall from the slots 22 whereupon they can be replaced by any designating type desired.
From the foregoing description it will readily appear that l have roduccd such a self inking device as will su stantially fulfil the objects of the invention, as setforth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described comprising a handle member, a type member ,mounted in the outer end of said handle member, an inking pad adapted to enga said type member, a projecting lever on said inking pad, a frame flexibly connected with said handle member, said lever being rigidly connected with the outer end of said frame, said lever being provided with a slot. cut into its inner end, a pin flexibly connected to said handle member and adapted to be projected into said slot, a cross-head on said pin adapted to engage said lever, and a A spring interposed between said handle member and said lever to hold the said lever in frictional contact with said cross-head, as described.
