APPARATUS FOR USE IN CLEANING CREAM-SEPARATOR SECTIONS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PERLEY L. KIMBALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellows Falls, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Use in Cleaning Cream-Separator Sections, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. y

The primary object of this invention is toprovide means for readily and thoroughly cleaning the sections which constltute the skimming device or skimmer of cream separators, and especially for so cleaning the sections in the condition in which they must be arranged or assembled for use in the separator bowl, without disassemblmg or de taching them from one another but merely removing them intact from the bowl.

The invention consists of a twirling device having a head which may be readily applied to the sections when they are assembled as for use so that the sections or skimming device or skimmer may be immersed in any cleaning fluid, such as water, in a pail or other receptacle, and rapidly turned back and forth until thoroughly cleaned in every part, and so as to be ready for use again in the separator, after any usual scalding and drying, when these last mentioned operations are necessary or desirable, all as I will proceed now more particularly to set forth and finally claim.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device applied to a series of sections united and constituting the skimming device or skinnner, illustrating the method of use. within the frame 2 and meshing with a bevel gear 7, which is mounted upon a stud shaft 8, secured in the frame 2. This bevel gear 7 is provided with a handle 9 by which said gear may be turned in either direction, so as to turn shaft 5 through its bevel gear 6. Fixed to the bottom of shaft 5 is a head 10, having the parallel notches 11, and a verticallyarranged spring pin 12.

The apparatus above described constituting the twirling device hereinabove referred to, is designed for use in connection with a stack or nest of separator sections 13, shown in Fig. 2, and indicated in Figs. 3, 4: and 5. These sections are connected by a pair of rods 14, and the stack or nest of sections so arranged upon these rods is secured by means of thumb-nuts 15 applied to the rods above and bearing upon the outermost section, the whole constituting the skimming topmost section, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5,?

so as to clamp the head and its superposed parts upon the sections in such way that the sections as a whole may be revolved back and forth by appropriately turning the handle 9 while thfeframe 2 is grasped by the operator, all substantially as indicated in Fig. 2. To wash or clean the sections, they are inserted in a pail or dish or other vessel containing enough water to cover the sections, and then the twirling device is turned in one direction rapidly, and then'as rapidly turned in the other direction, so that the centrifugal force exercised in connection with the involute curvature of the blades 16 which form parts of the sections will serve to thoroughly rinse or cleanse the sections.

The invention is herein shown and explained in connection with a skimming device or skimmer constructed in accordance with my invention patented May 4, 1909, No. 920,481. As shown in that patent, the sections, oras therein termed, the subdividers, comprise perforated plates 17 and the curved blades 16, the blades of adjacent sections interlocking. In the present invention the upper section has its plate 17 reinforced at 18 on opposite sides of its central opening 19, and these reinforces 18 are perforated to receive the reduced tubular extensions 20 of the thumb-nuts 15, and these nuts are provided with the collars 21 which rest upon said reinforces 18. The notches 11 straddle these shoulders beneath the heads of the thumb-nuts. The opening 19 is the opening hereinabove referred to into which the spring pin 12 snaps in order to locate the head.

The head 10 is recessed on its underside to form parallel flanges 22, or these flanges may be otherwise provided, and they aline with the edges of the reinforces 18 and thus aid in holding the head in engagement with the skimmer.

Thus is furnished a very simple and efficient self-contained and portable cleaning device, with few parts, and readily applica ble to the object to be cleaned. Of course, the head 10 or other medium for effecting a connection with the article to be cleaned will be modified within the principle of the inve'ntion as hereinafter claimed in such manner as to be readily applicable to the object or article to e cleaned and as readily detached therefrom.

What I claim is 1. The combination with a handle and frame, of a shaft, and means to rotate it mounted upon said frame, and a head secured to the shaft and provided with notches and a vertically disposed detent for detachably connecting it rigidly with an article to be cleansed by imparting thereto rotary motion.

2. An apparatus for use in cleaning cream separator sections, same comprising a frame, a shaft mounted therein, means on the frame to rotate said shaft, and a head fixed to the end of the shaft and turning therewith, and having notches and a spring pin for engaging the article to be cleaned.

8. In an apparatus for use in cleaning cream separator sections having extensions thereon, a head having notches to engage said extensions on the sections, and means to fix the engagement of the head with said sections, in combination with means to rotate said head and its attached sections.

4. In an apparatus for use in cleaning cream separator sections, without disassembling the sections, a head adapted to engage the assembled sections, and interlocking means to locate said head in engaging position on the sections, combined with means to rotate the head and sections in any desired. direction.

5. In an apparatus for use in cleaning the assembled sections constituting the skimmer of a cream separator, the uppermost of said sections having projecting parts and an opening, a head having notches to engage said projecting parts, flanges to cooperate with adjacent parts of the sections, and a spring pin to engage said opening, combined with a head rotator.

6. An apparatus for use in cleaning cream separator skimmers comprising a head having parallel notches and a vertically disposed spring detent adapted to be connected with the skimmer, a supporting frame for said head, and means to actuate said head in said supporting frame so as to impart a twirling motion to the skimmer.

7 A self-contained, portable apparatus for use in cleaning a cream separator skimmer, comprising a frame, a head mounted in said frame, means to impart a twirling motion to said head in said frame, and means on the head adapted to engage cooperating means on the assembled skimmer for looking it transversely and longitudinally with the skimmer.
