To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs Pane, a citizen of the United States,.residing at Paterson, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in De vices for Preventing the Freezing of House- Plumbing, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device to compel the tenants of a house in using the water supply from the different positions on the different floors to turn the water on and off by means of a certain valve located below freezing line, preferably in the cellar, from a leader or control adjacent to the point of use.
In carrying out the invention, I provide a valve beneath the freezing line in the cellar, and adjacent to a natural drainage point, or to a drop connection with a sewer, which valve may be the ordinary three-way valve,
so connected that water from the street mains will pass to the house plumbing on the straight connection, and that the water from the house plumbing will pass to an escape outlet to the drain in the other position of the valve. This valve, which I locate beneath the flooring of the cellar below freezing line, or protect by a sleeve rising up through the floor, is provided with an ordinary closure cap, and through the cap I pass a rod or spindle fastened to the valve plug, and extending up on to the floor of the building adjacent to the outlet to be controlled. The protect-ing sleeve for the valve is made preferably cylindrical with a bifurcated end, which will fit over the valve, one
of the bifurcations being provided with an,
opening to receive the drain projection from the valve, the other bifurcation being provided with a screw to hold the valve in place in the sleeve.
The scope of my invention will be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a building with my improved device shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a detailed plan of the spring and look device for returning the valve to its normal position. Fig. 3 is a central sectional side elevation of my improved protecting sleeve. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the sleeve and valve. Fig. 5 is a section on line 55, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional plan through the center of the valve.
As shown on the drawings, Fig. 1: 1 is the inlet pipe from the street main. 2 is the plumbing pipe through the house opening ad acent to the basin 3 or other plumbing fixture. 3 is the valve casing provided with an nlet passage 1, a valve 6 having a stralght away opening 7, and a branch opening or waste drain 8. 9 and 10 are stops on the valve casing with which a pin 11 on the valve plug may rest to secure two full open and closed posltlons for valve. 12 is a long spindle connected with the valve and rising through the house to the floor on which the water is to be controlled. 13 is a lever secured to the spindle 12. To lock the spindle 12 I provide the same with a lever or handle 14: located adjacent the lower end thereof, and provide a lock 16 and chain 17 secured, atone end thereof, to any suitable support. By means of the chain and lock the spindle 12 can be secured so that the valve cannot be turned thereby preventing a tenant from using water if the owner so desires. The protecting sleeve 18 is provided with a hole 19 on one side, through which the drain spout of the valve may project when the screw 20 forces the valve casing to the right, as shown in Fig. 3. A lower part of the sleeve is formed bifurcated, so as to straddle the valve casing as shown. A cap 21 may be provided for the protecting sleeve. The valve should be located as heretofore stated below the freezing line of the cellar floor, and adjacent to a natural drain or a sewer drainage shown at 24 in Fig. 1. A spring 15 is provided to cause the return of the valve to its proper position after the release of the lever 13.
In operation, should the tenant desire to use water he throws the lever adjacent to his basin or other utensil, which permits water to pass through the straight passage of the valve to the riser pipe, and to the basin. Upon releasing the lever the spring restores the valve to a position which connects the riser pipe with the outlet drain. The water which is unused and standing in the riser pipe then flows out and away, leaving an empty plumbing pipe through the exposed portion of the house. When the plug or valve 6 is turned to shut offthe water supply the waste opening 8 will aline with the opening 8 in the valve casing, thereby allowing the water from the riser 2 to run off through the waste opening 8. The connection between the shut-off valve and basin is direct, that is to say, I do not use any valves, the water being turned on or oif by means of the handle 18. As there are no valves in the line it is impossible for water to settle and freeze, the line being straight, without any pockets.
I claimas my invention:
1. The herein described device, consisting of a street inlet pipe, a house plumbing pipe, a valve between the two having passages adapted to connect the street supply with the house pipe, or the house pipe with a drain at a time of shut-off of the street pipe, said valve being protected from freezing, and a spindle from said valve passing up through the house to the point at which said supply is to be used, a sleeve for the valve having a bifurcated end straddling the valve, through one bifurcation of which the drain pipe passes, through the other bifurcation of which a set screw passes adapted to be forced against the valve easing.
2. The herein described device, consisting of a street inlet pipe, a house plumbing pipe, a valve between the two having passages adapted to connect the street supply with the house pipe, or the house pipe with a drain at atime of shut-01f of the street pipe, said valve being protected from freezing, anda spindle from said valve passing up through the house to the point at which said supply is to be used, a sleeve for the valve having a bifurcated end straddling the valve, through one bifurcation of which the drain pipe passes, through the other bifurcation of which a set screw passes, adapted to be forced against the valve casing, said valve and sleeve being located at a distance below the floor line, with the upper end of the sleeve protruding therefrom.
3. The herein described device, consisting of a street inlet pipe, a house plumbing pipe, a valve between the two having passages adapted to connect the street supply with the house pipe, or the house pipe with a drain at a time of shut-off of the street pipe, said valve being protected from freezing, and a spindle from said valve passing up through the house to the point at which said supply is to be used, a sleeve for the valve having a bifurcated end straddling the valve, through one bifurcation of which the drain pipe passes, through the other bifurcation of which a set screw passes adapted to be forced against the valve casing, a resilient means for normally closing said valve between supply and house piping, and for opening the house piping to the drain.
4. The herein described device, consisting of a street inlet pipe, a house plumbing pipe,
a valve between the two having passages adapted to connect the street supply with the house pipe, or the house pipe with a drain at a time of shut-off of the street pipe, said valve being protected from freezing, and a spindle from said valve passing up through the house to the point at which said supply is to used, a sleeve for the valve having a bifurcated end straddling the valve, through one bifurcation of which the drain pipe passes, through the other bifurcation of which a set screw passes, adapted to be forced against the valve casing, said valve and sleeve being located at a distance below the floor line, with the upper end of the sleeve protruding therefrom, a resilient means for normally closing said valve between supply and house pipe, and for open ing the house piping to the drain.
