Specification of Letters l'atent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1912.
Application filed Augnst 3, 1911. Serial No. 642,121. 7 Y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Guanine Gooowm, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglass-Holders, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to that class of eyeglass holders which comprises a reel for winding the eyeglass chain inclosed in a housing adapted for attachment to the clothing. a
The objects of my invention are primarily simplicity and cheapness of construction, a
reduction of the number of constituent parts, and facility, and certainty-of travel nish a means for insuring a uniform disuse of tance of travel of the chain durin the eyeglasses and obviate the necessity of re-.
peatedly jerking the chain to catch o1:'r e-: lease apawl locking reel as required in g The described reel web'has fixed upon'its present structures.
In the accompanying in like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views, Figures 1 and' 2 are front and side elevations respectively of my novel eyeglass holder, Fig. 3, a secsection of the reel web, Fig. 8, 'a side elevation of the reel, and Fig. 9, a plan of the bearing plate for the spring.
The holder casing in the present instance comprises a back plate 10 having a side wall or flange 11 provided with an opening 12. The material of the plate 10 at its center is drawn inwardly forming a tubular 1 sleeve or bearing 14 which is longitudinallyslit to form an outturned finger 16 incline from the base of the sleeve.
Attached to the back face ofthe plate 10 in any usual convenient manner is a fabric "ginal flange 23 fi-ictionally engaging and engaging 'device consisting in this instance of a omt consisting of a front plate 22 having a mar- To the above ends essentially my inven-. tion consists in such novel parts and com-- binations of parts as fall within "the scope. of the appended claims. I
drawings which form a part of this specification and wheremember 18, catch 19 and :p'in tongue 20. A cover completes t e casing,
provided with a flange 30 of the same depth as .the' hub 28.
A lip '31 is cut from the body of the flange I 30. The looped end 32 of a volute spring 33 engages the lip 31 while. its other end is looped as at 34 upon the finger 16.. The spr ng is inclosed by the flange 30 and abuts aga nst a bearing or space plate 35 resting against the inner face of the plate 29 and plate is providedwith a peripheral notch 39.
flange 30 a cylindrical rim 41 having outturned flanges 42 extending from its ends.
provided with a central opening .37. The
The 41 is provided with'an opening 44 reg stering with the opening 39 in. the plate 35, whereby one end .of the chain may be readily afiixed in position. In these openings is held by fridtion or otherwise the end link 46 of a chain 47 wound about the rim 41 of the' drum and passes through the open- 1 ings 12, 24, of the casing. This. end link 46 is passed through the coincident openings 39 and 44, as seen in Fig.3, the said link being then turned at an angle to the next adjacent link, which latter lies in saidopenings and the end link 46 bearing/against the inner wall,.as seen in Fig. 3, "prevents displacement of the chain.- The chain is provided at one end with a snap 49, and intermediate'its length is a ball 50 of greater dimensions than the portion 25 of the opening in the flange 23, but of less dimension than the slot portion 24. The ball is located at such a distance from the snap as to allow the requisite length of chain. for the use ofthe operator while the eyeglasses are in use. I
The spring 33 acting upon the reel normall winds the chain tight within the easing oldin the snap 49 tight against the casing. w ien it is desired to use the eyeglasses the operator pulls the chain outwardly throu h the larger portion 24 of the opening l nt the ball 50 emerges. -The direction of the pull upon the chainis then changed to bring the latter in the portion- 25 'of" the opening, and the chain is then released; whereupon the ball is pulled by the the reel, a snap upon the chain-exterior of glasses.
action of the'spring intoand retained in its concave seat 26', where it remains until the operator discontinues the use'of the eye- What I claim -is,-
1. In a device of the typeset forth, the combination with the casing provided in the fixed wallthereof with an opening of elongated form, reduced in width at'one end, of
a reel rotatably mounted in the casing,ya
chain upon the reel extending through said opening, means for exerting tension upon the casing, and means upon an intermediate portion-of the chain adapted to engage a 2. In a device of the type set forth', a casing provided in a fixed wall thereof with an opening having abroad portion and a nar- .row portion, a reel rotatably mounted in the travel of the chain, said casing being pro-' casing, means exerting tension on the reel, a chain upon the reel extending through the opening, a snap upon the chain exterior of the casing, and an enlargement upon an intermediate portion of the chain movable through the enlarged portion of the opening and engageable with the fixed walls of the narrower portion'of the opening to stop the vided at the end of the narrow portion of the opening with inwardly dished walls to form a seat for said enlargement.
3. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with a casing comprising a front and back plate, of a tubular bearing upon the back plate, a reel within the casing,
a hub integral with the reel: andv extending into the bearing, a spring surroundingthe bearing and attached to the bearing and to the reel, a chain upon the reel having a portion extending through an opening in the casing, a bearing plate resting against the inner face of the reel and having a central opening and a peripheral notch, the rim of the reel having an'opening registering with said notch, a spring abutting against said bearing plate, and a chain having one end plate and rim. Y 4. In a device ofthe combination with a casing comprising a front plate and back'plate,-of a tubular hearing integral with the back plate, a reel with- \ip the casingcomprisi'ngarirmabody and a hub, said hub being located withinthe bear.- ing', a spring connecting said bearing and bodyand surrounding the bearing, a bearing plate between said-body and spring, and ,bearingagainst the inner face of the web of the reel, and a'chain upon said rim, said bearingplate having a peripheral notch for cooperation with said chain. 1
5. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with a casing comprising a front plate and a back plate, of a tubular bearing rigid with the back plate, a reel within the casing comprising-a rim, av body, and a hub, said hub-being located within said bearing, a spring connecting said bearing and body and surrounding the bearing,
