PACKING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1912.
Application filed March 13, 1912. Serial No. 683,436.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN KERCI-INER and JOHN STUGNER, subjects of the King of Hungary, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to packings for hammers of the hydraulic and steam operated type, and the primary object of our invention is to provide a packing that will insure a non-leakable connection between the piston rod and the cylinder of the hammer.
Another object of this invention is to provide positive and reliable means, in a manner as will be hereinafter set forth, for connecting the hammer head to the piston rod.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the steam hammer, partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a plan of a sectional locking ring, Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 7 illusstrates details of the packing.
The reference numeral 1 denotes an A- frame having the upper end thereof provided with a seat 2 for the base 3 of a steam cylinder 4. The cylinder 4 has'a detachable head 5 and a steam chest 6 provided with if the metallic packing ring 12 mounted upon the seat 9, the resilient packing ring 13 upon the ring 12 and the gland 14 retaining said rings within the opening 8. The ring 12 is made in two semi-circular sections whereby it can be easily placed upon the seat 9 around the rod 11. The resilient packing ring 13 is similar to the ring 12 and is preferably made of rubber. The gland 14 is made in two sections and is provided with lateral lugs or extensions 15 and the sections of said gland are connected together by bolts 16 and nuts 17 said bolts extending through transverse openings 18 provided therefor in the lugs or extensions 15. The confronting faces of the lugs or extensions 15 are recessed, as at 19 to provide vertical openings adapted to receive depending stud bolts 20, carried by the base 3 of the cylinder. Screwed upon these bolts are nuts 21 adapted to retain the gland in the lower end of the opening 8.
The lower end of the piston rod 11 has a head 22 adapted to fit in a socket 23 rovided therefor in a guide 24 slidably mounted in the beam 25 of the frame 1. To retain the head 22 in the guide 24, a sectional locking ring 26 is employed and fitted in the socket 23 upon the upper beveled edges of the head 22, the lower end of the ring 26 being beveled, as at 27 to engage the head 22. Each section of the ring 26 has a socket 28 with the walls thereof threaded to receive the lower end of a rod or suitable instrument (not shown) adapted to facilitate the placing and removal of the sectional locking ring. To retain the ring in the socket 23, bars 29 are employed, these bars being arranged transversely of the socket 23 in openings 3 provided therefor in the guide 20.
Suitably attached to the bottom of the guide 24 is a hammer head 31 adapted to engage a block 32 arranged upon the foundation 33 of the A-frame 1. To cushion an upward stroke of the guide 24, the base 3 of the cylinder is provided with sockets 34 and in these sockets are arranged coiled springs 35.
What we claim is In a hammer, a cylinder, a base carried by said cylinder, sectional packing rings arranged in said base, a piston rod slidably In testimony whereof We afiix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN KERGHNER, JOHN STUGNER.
