GAS-BURNER.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that' I, WILLIAM NEWTON BEST, S12, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gas-Burner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in gas. burners adapted for heating, the special object of the invention being to so construct the burner that the combustible gas after escaping will become mixed with air and burn closely adjacent the surface of the refractory material, which latter will retain the heat and facilitate the combus-' tion.
gaseous fuel through a plurality of small openings and substantially parallel to the surface of a refractory block, so that the block will be heated by the burning gas, and, at the same time, will serve to heat the gas and air adjacent the burner. By'this construction I secure a greater degree of heat.
The invention may be embodied in any form of heating apparatus, and the gas delivery tube and the refractory material be of any suitable form or size, to secure the desired object. v
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erence indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which F1gure 1 is a longitudinal section through a water heater having a burner constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section through a portable stove embodying my invention.
My improved burner is adapted for heating purposes, and when used for heating, I may employ a second block of refractory material, so that the flame will lie between two substantially parallel blocks.
In Figs. 1 and 2, I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention inwhich the urner is used for heating a water coil in the type of construction commonly known as instantaneous heaters. In this construction, I .utilize an annular burner tube 23, supported by a delivery pipe 24 extending diametrically across the burner. This Specification of Letters Patent.

The lower end of theblock may rest directly upon the cross pipe 24'and the upper end may be held in place and prevented from moving upwardly or laterally by a securing plate 27 connected to theextension of the pipe 25. The burner is supported inside of a sheet metal casing 28 and concentric therewith, and the adjacent portion of the sheet metal casing may have a lining 29 of refractory material. This lining is concentric with the block 26 and is spaced a'short distance therefrom to leave an annular passage, at the lower end of which is the annular burner tube 23. The flame rising from the burner is midway between the two refractory surfaces and closely adjacent to each, so that both operate to radiate heat to the mixture as itis formed directly above the openings in the burner tube, and to facilitatefibmbustion and create a higher temperature, the lining block 29 may also be provided with apertures therethrough, if desired. Substantially the same construction may be employed in a portable stove. In Fig. 3, I have illustrated a portable stove having a burner identical in form with that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, save that the casing 28 is not as tall and no water coil is employed. .The stove may be supported abovethe floor by suitable legs 32, and perforations may be provided in the upper portion of the casing instead of in the heat-deflecting'top or dome 31*.
It will be noted that the gas escapes vertically through a row of small openings, and substantially parallel to the surface of a block of refractory material closely adjacent thereto. Having thus described my invention, I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A, gasburner comprising a vertically disposed gas delivery tube, branches extending therefrom in'opposite directions, an annular burner tube concentric with said gas delivery tube, and in communication with said branches, an annular block of refractory material, encircling said gas delivery tube and provided with openings. the annular block being disposed within the vertical projection of the annular burner tube, an-

A gas burner comprising a vertical gas delivery tube, branches extending therefrom, an annular burner tube concentric to said gas delivery tube and connected with said oranches, an annular member of refractory material encircling said gas delivery tube and substantially coaxial with and within the vertical projection of said annular burner tube, said block of refractory material being in close proximity to the said burner tube, another block of refractory material encircling said first mentioned block i and said burner tube, and spaced from the first-mentioned block, said second-mentioned block of retract ory material being provided with openings, and a metallic casing encir- 1 cling said second-mentioned block and protrided with openings in registry with the l Openings in said second-mentioned block.
