To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINER R. PARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roseburg, in the county of Douglas and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Type-Setting Device, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a device for setting type by hand, and its object is to provide means whereby any one of the type of the alphabet may be selected as desired, or whereby such double letters as double e, double 0, or double 1, etc, may be lifted two at a time when necessary.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device for holding the type in such a manner as to enable them to be readily cleaned.
In the drawings in which the same numeral of reference is applied to the same portion throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the type-setting table showing a portion thereof in section for purposes of illustration, the legs being broken away to enable the machine to be shown upon a larger scale than would otherwise be possible, Fig. 2 is an end view of a portion of the table, five type holding grooves being shown, although it will be understood that in a full sized machine, it will be necessary to have at least twenty-six grooves on each side of the selecting mechanism, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the selecting mechanism with one side plate removed therefrom for purposes of illustration, and showing a number of type abutting against the edges of the selector mechanism. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the upper portion of the selector showing the single type and double type levers, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of the selector mechanism showing the double space types, and Fig. 6 is an edge view of a portion of the selector mechanism showing the double space lever and side plates only.
The numeral 1 represents the legs of the type table which may be of a suitable length to permit a person to sit down at the machine, said legs supporting a table 2 on each side of the selecting mechanism 3. The several series of selecting mechanisms, one for two type, are severally strung on a supporting bar 4 and are suitably connected at each edge to the grooved table 2. The grooved table has grooves 5 to receive the type 6, which type are pulled forward by means of a block 7, around which passes a cord 8, said cord lying in grooves 9 on each side of the grooves 5 and having both ends thereof passed over the top of the bar 4 and around a roller 10, a spring 11 pulling the string of type forward. There are two sets of rollers 10, one set on each side of the type selecting mechanism, and they are supported by means of a board 12 secured to the bottom of the type selecting mechanism, and they have their upper ends journaled in the bottom of the table 2.
The type selecting mechanism comprises a pair of plates 13 and 14, the latter of which has the type-selecting guard 15 at the two upper corners thereof, the opening through said guard permitting only such type as may pass through itto rise out of the type channel When sought. Extending downwardly from a point below the notch 16 at each side of the plates 13 and 14, are bars 17, said bars being pivoted near their lower ends to plates 18, which plates each have a slot 19 and open slot 20 therein. The plate 18 is connected by means of its slot 19 to a lever 21, which lever is pivoted to the plates 13 and 14 at 22, and which has its handle 23 extending above the top of the plates 13 and 14. A spring 24 is coiled around a suitable post 25 and holds the two levers 23 on each selecting device in the position indicated by the right hand lever, Fig. 3, except when it is desired to pick up a type, in which event the desired type lever will be moved back as indicated by the left hand lever, Fig. 3, whereupon it is possible for a bar 26, of which there are two, one on each edge of the type selecting mechanism, to lift the desired bar 17 and project the desired type up through the selector plate 15. Unless some means such as the plate 15 is provided to prevent the next to the last type from rising when one type is to be lifted, any movement of the last type of the line will tend to dislodge a number of type instead of one, therefore, the plate 15 is used to prevent the dislodgment of more type than the one or two desired. The bars 26 are connected by means of several rods 27 to a plate 28 below the plate 12, and this plate 28 is connected by means of a pitman 29 to a foot lever 30. The foot lever is pivoted to the floor at 31 by means ofasuitable support, and whenever one of the levers 23 is pushed back, the desired type may be pushed up by depressing the foot lever.
Inasmuch as certain type frequently occur as double letters, for example, double e, double 0, double 1, etc., it is desirable to have some means whereby two type may be picked up instead of one, and this means comprises the secondary type selector plate 32 having a slot 33 therein and 10 pivoted to a lever 34. The lever 34 is pivoted at 35 to the plates 13 and 14 and at 36 to the plate 32, a spring 37 extending from the post 25 holding said lever 34 normally raised. At its outer end, the plate 32 has a 15 U-shaped portion indicated at 40, the object being to form a smooth surface agamst which the type may abut, while at the same time leaving an opening through which the bar 17 may pass when a given type is to be 20 hfted.
.The result of the construction outlined is that normally a line of type is presented to the opening in the plate 15 by being pressed against the end of the plate 32 at 40, the
spring holding said plate extended being sufiicient to overcome the spring pushing the line of type against said plate. This plate 40 is so set that one type may then be pushed up through the hole in the plate 15.
When it is desired to pick up more than one type, the lever 34 is depressed, thus moving the plate in the direction of movement of the line of type, the thickness of one type, and thus permitting the bar 17 35 to push two type through the hole in the plate 15.
It will be noted that inasmuch as the plate 32 moves backward only about onesixteenth of an inch for the widest letters,
0 its movement is substantially parallel to its initial position. It will be noted that the plates 18 have projections 41 at the bottom thereof and similar projections 42 at the upper ends thereof, the former being for 45 the purpose of permitting the bars 26 to draw the bars 17 down, and the latter being for the purpose of enabling the bars 26 to lift the bars 17, while the slot 20 passes over a projection 43 on the plate 13 and holds the bar 17 raised so long as pressure is kept upon the foot lever, since only when the plate 18 passes out of contact with the projection 43 can the plate 18 be retracted so that its upper projection 42 does not engage the bar 26.
In operation the levers 23 are all suitably lettered, although of course, the operator becomes so familiar with the places of all of the letters that lettering in time becomes unnecessary, and the thumb is placed against the lever 23, moving it to the position indi cated on the left, Fig. 3. The foot lever 30 is then depressed and the desired type projects up through the selector plate 15, whereupon the thumb is free to be used to pick up the desired type, after which the foot lever may be dropped and another type selected. WVhen it is desired to pick up two type as, for example, double e, the thumb is placed against the lever 23 and one of the fingers is used to depress the lever 34, whereupon the foot lever is operated and two type will be pushed up through the selector plate 15.
It will, of course, be understood by those 5 skilled in the art that the openings through the selector plates 15 will be made to correspond with the particular type to be used therewith, as, for example, the letters m and w are very wide, while 1 is nar- 0 row, and therefore the openings through the plates would vary in size in accordance with the letter to be projected therethrough.
It is to be observed that it is necessary to have the operating levers 23 and 34 closely 5 adjacent the line of type from which a type is to be selected for the reason thatthese levers aiford the means whereby a particular line is identified, and in order to pick up a type it is necessary for the selector lever to be as close as possible to the type to be projected from the line of type in order to have the thumb and fingers in the proper position to pick up the type to be selected, while, at the same time, holding said levers in a position to be operated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, modifications within the scope of the claims being expressly reserved, is as follows 1. In a type selecting mechanism, a grooved table, a plate connected therewith, a thumb lever pivoted to said plate, a slidable bar carried by said plate and operatively connected to said thumb lever, means to lift said slidable bar to project a type from a line of type in one of the grooves of the table, a secondary type selector plate and a, secondary lever to permit the selection of an additonal type from said line of type when desired, substantially as described.
2. In a type selecting mechanism, a grooved table, a plate connected therewith,
a thumb lever pivoted to said plate, a slid- 1 able bar carried by said plate and operatively connected to said thumb lever, means to lift said slidable bar to project a type from a line of type in one of the grooves of the table, a secondary type selector plate, a secondary lever to permit the selection of an additional type from said line of type when desired, and means to move said line of type forward when one or more type are lifted from the selecting mechanism, substantially as described.
3. In a type selecting mechanism, a grooved table, a plate connected therewith,
a thumb lever pivoted to said plate, a slidable bar carried by said plate and operatively connected to said thumb lever, means to lift said slidable bar to project a type from a line of type in one of the grooves of -the table, a secondary type selector plate,
a secondary lever to permit the selection of an additional type from said line of type when desired, and a type selecting guard to prevent the dislodgment of a number of the type when one or more type are to be removed from a groove in the table, substantially as described.
1. In a type selecting mechanism, a table having grooves therein, a plate having a thumb lever pivoted thereto, a slidable bar operatively connected with said thumb lever and adapted to project a type from a line of type in one of the grooves of the table, a pivoted plate connected to the thumb lever and slidable bar, a foot lever, means connected to the foot lever to raise the slidable bar when a type is to be withdrawn from the groove in said table, blocks slidable in said grooves, and spring operated rollers having cords passing around said blocks to draw said line of type toward the selector mechanism when a type has been removed from the line, substantially as described.
5. In a type selecting mechanism, a grooved table, a plate connected therewith, a thumb lever pivoted to said plate in the plane of the line of type, a slidable bar carried by said plate and operatively connected to said thumb lever, means to lift said slidable bar to project a type from a line of type in one of the grooves of the table, a type guard extending over the line of type and means to prevent the slidable bar from being released after the same has been lifted and prior to its release by the lowering of the lifting means, substantially as described.
