To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. Jon- GESON, a citizen of the United States, residin the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in Show-Cases, of which the ollowing is a specificatlon.
My invention relates to that type of showcase wherein plate glass is employed to form the front, ends and top of the show-case, and my primary object is to provide improved means for joining the glass plates at the front corners of the show-case, obviaiing the necessity of drilling holes in the glass plates. illustrated in 1t-s preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a broken plan new of a showcase constructed in accordance with my 1nvent-ion; Fig. 2, a broken horizontal sectional view, looking upwardly toward the lower surface of the glass top plate; Fig. 3, a bottom view of a modification of my improved corner fixture; Fig. 4, an enlarged broken section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, an enlarged broken View taken as indicated at line 5 of-Fig. 1; and Fig. 6, a bottom perspective view of a corner plate employed.
In the preferred in Figs. 1, 2 and 4' proved show-case comprises a base A; aback 13; glass end-plates C (one shown) a glass front plate D; a glass top plate E; and front corner fasteners F (one shown).
The back B of the show-case is usually provided with 16 or more sliding doors (not shown)! At the rear corners of the show-case are usually employed wooden uprights 1, forming a portion of the back of the show-case. I
Each fastening device F (one being employed at each upper front corner of the show-case) comprises a corner plate 2 interposed between the to plate E and the adjacent upper edges of the end plate C and front plate D, said plate 2 having downturned exterior flanges 3 adapted to embrace the outer surfaces of the end andpfront plates; an angular inner clampin member 4 adjustably connected with the ower side of the plate 2,; and a hook-form top-plate clamp 5 whose hooked outer extremlty engages the front edge of the top late, said clamp 5 having a shank 6 whic extends construction illustratedj to 6 inclusive, the imthrough a perforation in the flange 3 and is ad ustab y connected with the plate, 2, preferably by the same means which connects the inner clamping member 4 to said plate. A connecting device 7 anchors the corner-fastener F to the back of the showcase.
The corner-fastener F is preferably interchangeable, that is to sa it is capable of use at either upper front corner of the showcase. Thus, each down-turned flange 3 of the corner-plate 2 is provided with a slot or opening 8, whose upper wall is flush with the ower surface of the plate 2; and depending fr'om the center threaded stud or bolt 9 which is equi-dis tant from the flanges 3. The shank 6 of the top-plate clamp 5 is provided with a slot 10 adapted to engage the stud 9. It will be noted that the shank 6 is disposed in contact With the lower surface of the plate 2; and the angular inner clamping member 4 is provided with a portion or shank 11 which is inte osed between the shank 6 and a nut 12 applied to the threaded stud 9. The shank-portion 11 of the clamp 4 is provided with an oblique slot 13, permitting adjustment of the clamp along a line which makes angles of 45 with the front plate and end plate of the show-case. depending flange or lug front plate D and a similar lug 15 parallel with the end plate 0. It is obvious that the front and end plates-may be clamped between the flanges 3 of the corner plate 2 and the lugs 14 and 15 by adjustment of the clamp 4 toward the corner of the show-case.
The preferred construction of the means 7 for anchoring the corner connection F to the back of the showcase is a rod-16 having a threaded rear end and provided at its front end with a hook 17 which engages adown-turned perforate ear or lug 19 with which the inner extremity of the shank 6 of the top-plate clamp 5 is provided; and a tubular nut or hollow screw 20 which extends through a perforation 21 in the corner member 1 which forms a part of the of the plate 2 is a 14 parallel with the back of the show-case, said hollow member 20 receiving the threaded rear extremity of the rod 16. her 20 engages a washer 22, as shown in Fig. 5. When the fastener F is employed at the front corner of the show-case which is shown in Fig. 1, theshank 6 of-the top-plate clamp passes through one of the slots 8; and when the fastenen is employed at the other front "corner of the show-case, said shank 6 passes through the other slot 8. Obviously, there fore, the corner fastener is an interchangeable device, of the upper front corners of the show-case. According to this invention, itvis possible to stanchly construct a show-case of this charapter without drilling holes in the glass topate. 'Eener can be manufactured at very small cost, and can be readily applied.
