Specification of 'Letters Patent.

Application filed lTanuary 26. 1912. Serial No. 673,549.
To all 'wher/'L it may concern:
Be it known that l, lViLLL-iir llTnNDoBr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, illinois, have invented a new and useful Tailors` Measuring Device, of which the following is a specification.
flhe essential object of this invention i to provide new and improved mean wherebyv a tailor ma)7 talre the ineasiu'ements of a customer, and the invention is adapted to be used for the purpose of taking the measurements of ladies waists or of mens coats or vests.
In the drawings Figure l is an elevation showing a vest or other garment in outline, and the device forming the subject matter hereof prior to taking the measurements ot the customer, the dotted lines showing the positions to which certain of the parts are adapted to be moved in order to taire certain measurements; `Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device as sed for taking front measurements; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the device as arranged for talring the rear measurements of the person tor whom the garment is to be made; and Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views ta ren on the line @t1-:0 and 5--5 respectively.
.fr flexible steel tape l has a member 2, formed of brass or other metal, riveted thereto at 3, the point being' the point from which all measurements start. L sliding member 4 carrying an upright arm is mounted upon said steel tape, which moves slidablvr toward or away 'from point Two other members (i and 7 are also slidable upon said tape l, member 6 being on one side of point 3 and member 'Y being upon the other side thereof. it point 3 there is a stud 9 from which a tape l0 depends, the tape being secured to a member ll which loops over stud 9 so that the tape can swing freely about said stud. The members 6 and T, respectively, bear similar studs l2 and 13 and tapes 11- and l5 are secured to studs 1Q and 13 so as to swing loosel;T thereupon. A separate tape 16 is provided, tape 1G not being secured to the other parts ot the device. The several members Q, (i, and 7 are each provided with sharp hoo rs 17, which are adapted to hook into the under garments so that the measuring devicel can be held in place upon the person ot the customer without requiring the use of the tailors hands. At one end of the steel tape l is a lrnob 18, and at the other end thereof there is a series m Ui.
ot perfor-ations 19 of a size adapted to receive the knob. Each oit the members l, l0, let, l5, and 16 bears a scale which clearly shows the measurements that have been galten by that tape.
lllhen the device is to be used, the steel tape l is placed about the person of the customer whose measure is being talren so as to give the chest measurement. 1 rEhe stud 18 locks the lett-hand end ot the tape (Fig. l) to the right-hand end, and thus indicates one measurement required by the tailor. The slide e is then moved to a point so that the upwardly projecting members 2 and 5 respectively bear against the frontI and the baclr of the arm-pits, which measurement is indicated upon the scale borne upon the member' l hv the distance between points 3 and 20. The member 6 is moved upon said scale until it stands iu the middle of the back ot the person being measured, and the distance between points 8 and 2l is half of the bach width. rlie member 7 is then moved until it stands in the center' of the breast or chest of the person being measured, and the distance between noints 3 and 22 gives the ifi-ont breast measure. The tape l0, wien it is in the position shown in Jfull lines in l, will give the side waist length. Then moved to the dotted line position designated 23, said tape l0 gives the bust measure. When it is moved to the dotted line position 24s. it gives the neck point measurement. Vhen it is moved to the dotted line posit-ion 25, it gives halt ot the over shoulder measurement.
Tape i5. when in the full line position Figs. l and 2, gives the front waist length measurement; when in the dotted line position Q6, it gives the trent balance measurement; when in the position 2T, it gives the iront height measurement; and bv reading downwardl)T upon said tape l5, when same is in the full line position, to the point where the dotted line 23 intersects same, the front depth measurement is obtained.
Bv the tape le, when in the full line position. the bac r waist length measurement is given; when in the dotted line position 28, the back over shoulder measurement is obtained; and in the position 29, the back height measurement is indicated. The separate tape 16 is used for giving the waist measurement.
ritter the various measurements have been taken, the device is removed from the person of the customer Who is being, measured, and can be laid down upon the paper or other substance from Which the pattern is cut before the slides 4, 6, and 7 are moved, and the pattern can quickly be drawn or laid out upon the paper simply by moving` the various tapes l0, 14, and l5 so that they assume upon the pattern the various positions indicated by dotted lines in the drawing.
The member 2 is firmly secured to the steel tape l by rivets 8l, While each of the members t, (5, and 7, is preferably constructed as shown in Fig. being formed so as completely to loop over the tape l and fasten thereupon by a rivet 32, which rivet, however, must be loose enough to permit said members to slide back and forth upon tape l.
Many changes in the details of the construction ot' the various parts can be made Without departing' from the scope of the invention or of the various claims.
I claim as my invention In a device of the character described, the combination of a flexible tape, a member ixed thereupon and projecting outwardly therefrom, a slidable member mounted upon said tape and adapted to be moved toward or away from said fixed member, the arm of the person being measured being adapted to be placed in the space between said iXed member and said slidable member, a pair of slidable members, one of said members being adapted to approach one end of the tape and the other of said members being adapted to approach the other end of the tape, each of said second-mentioned slidable members having` a tape in pivotal connection therewith, and a tape pivotally attached to said A first-mentioned tape adjacent to its point of attachment to said outwardly-projecting member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto attiXed my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
