Speciioation of Letters Patent. i Original application-filed August 28, 1896, Serial No. 604,162. Renewed June 8, 1905, Serial No. 264,335.
Patenteaoetl 15,1912.
Divided and this application filed December 15, 1905. Serial No. 291,883.
601,162, and renewed June 8, 1905, Seriali This invention relatesl to a certain improvement in pipe wrenches of the type shown in United States Patent No. 167,368 dated August 31 1875, the object of the present invention being to improve the operation of a .wrench of that type by causing it to grasp the pipe more securely. 1 I
In the accompanying drawing; Figure l, is a side .view of a Wrench made in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2, is a sectional view of the same on the line 1f-a, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, is a transverse section on the line b-b, Fig. 1.
vThe Wrench comprises a handle 1, and a head 2, made` in'one/piece, said head comprising tWo jaws 3 and 4, -disposed at an 'angle to one another, so asto provide a tapering mouth or ,f ,rullet between them. The acting face of thejaw 3 is provided with teeth disposed diagonally across the same, as shown in Fig. 3,l and lsaid face is parallel, and, by preference, approximately flush, with the central longitudinal line of the handle l, the acting face of the jaw 4 being diagonal in respect to said line. yIt has been found that when the toothed jaw of the wrench is thus disposed aquicker and firmer grip of the Wrench upon apipe or other rounded surface is secured than when the acting faces of both .of the jaws are inclinedin respect to the longitudinal linev of the wrench, as in the former patent.
In order to permit of 4the ready renewal of the toothed surface of the jaw 3, said toothed surface is formed on a bit 5, which has a tenon 6, fitting Within a mortised portion of the jaw 3, the bit being retained in place on the jaw by means of transverse bolts, screws, rivets or other equivalent fastenings, a pair of rivets 7 being shown for the purpose in the present instance.
I claim as the invention of the said GEORGE WV. IVAITr:
A wrench having tW'o ri `id jaws, one pre-V sent-ingV a toothed face su stantially parallel with the handle of the wrench and the other presenting a smooth inner face disposed at an acute angle in respect to the inner, face of the first jaw.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
