Description

APPLIOATIOH FILED APR. 21, 1910 Patented 0015.151912.
" Aam/EVS.
ALBERT H. EMERY, OF STANFORD, CONNETCUT.
I FULCRUM non sonnes.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented Got. 15, 1912.
Application filed April 21, 1910. Serial No. 556,671.
,To M whom t may concern Be it known that I,- ALBERT H. Emmi', n citizen of the United States, residing in Stamford, in the county of Fairfield, State 'ofConecticnt, hitve invented certain new `and useful Improvements in- Fulci-urns for Seules, of which the following is u specitication.
My invention relates .toe new form of plate fulerum for use in scales und Vespe- Cinll in the scales nsed in connection with the ery testing machine shown inv my Patent No. 918,488.
My invention is illustrated by two figures on one sheet of drawings of which- Figure 1 isa cross section of n fulerum, Fig.' 2 is a View showing the use of four of "these fulerums :is applied to two of the 4levers of. a scale. Y l y` My invention is morel fully described 1n the following speeilications .in which 1 isn frnme or base. 2 is the first' lever of e scale which lever visfulcrumed to the'frame 1 by fulcrum 3 set in block 1^.
'Il is a, column on vwhich -the load to be weighed is applied. This load is trnnsnutted to the lever 2 by fuleruirr 5 and the long end of the lever 2 is conm .cited to the lever 6 by fulorum 7, which lever 6 rests on frame 1 through Afulerum 8. These fulcrums may be held. in pince in various Ways, several of which are illustrated in the drnwinff. Fulf i Crum 5 is held in lever 2 by having a forced 35 tit and is held :it'thc other end in piece 9 by l clamp 10 andA screws 10A in onedirection 'and by screws l1 in the other, the piece 9 beingheld in load column 4 by screws 12. .Fulcrum 3 is secured to block 1^ by a clamp y 4,0 piece 13 zfndscrews 14E in one direction and by screws 15 in the other and to lever 2 in .bothdireetions where. screws 16 hold it in one direction and screws 17 hold it inthe other.
'For ense of assembling anddisnssembling the fulcrum may be fastened to e block, which is in turn fastened/totheframe or vlotherpart. This is illustrated by fuleruni 5 which is fastened to block 9, which is in O turn fastened to` load column 4 by screws 12 andyby fulerum lwhich is secured to block l", which is secured to the frame. In :is
, sounding-,the fulerums 3 and 5 nre assembled with the lever 2 and with blocks 9 and 1^'and then the whole assembled with the 'frame 1 and .load column 4, the screws 12 lows the .fulcrum t'o be easily secured firmly being at an `ingle with the faces in the load column l zigainst which block 9 rests :ind draw the block firmly against these in es and insure its being' readily replaced in exact position. In order to replaicc the block 1^ in exact position I use screws ld, which 'drew its side face iirmly against the corresponding face in the frame, and the wedge piece 19, Whieh is drawn in by screws 2O forcing the block 1^ down on its seat in framed; This arrangementof wedge piece 19 ond screws 18 and 20 allows the hloclr to be disassembled and `replaced in exact po sition.
The fulcrum itself is formed with a relatively thin central .portion connecting twov much thicker portions or heads, this thin portion giving the fulcrum its flexibility while the large heads spreadout the load and decrease its intensity, umd, is en irnprovement on the ordinary knife edge form which upon heavy loadingv or use loses its sharpness and thus becomes inaccurate because of friction and changed length of lever arms, and, it is also an improvement on my old plate fulcrum, generally known :is the hnery pla-te fulorum used in the Einery testing machines' andl elsewhere, for under heavy `loads the plate compresses sen sibly in the clamped portions as well as in the freeportion and this causes a slight slipping between itund the sides of the sent, which is 'objections-ble. This /new form, by very greatly increasing` the aren in the por tion 'forming the ends where they are seated, allows the-load to he transmitted from the fnlcrum tothe lever or frame Wholly by di reet pressure instead of clamping friction and direct pressure combined, and this nl- `in its sent in :1 manner to prevent blacklash or slipping, .and'allows it to be easily res moved and replaced exactly where it was bef fore. 100 Having thus described my invention, what l claim ns nenr and desire to secure by Letters latcnt is l. In ascale, the combination with two members each providedwith a fulormu sont, of a. fulerum entering snd Fulcrum stents und connecting said members and allowing' relative angular motion between them: smid fulcrum havingn thin flexible central portion', :rnd euch end thereof terminating in n thick .solid rectangular portion.
