To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that l, CHARLES. M. CLEMENS, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Eyota, in the county of Olmsted, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Onion-Toppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it aoaertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in onion toppers.
An object of this invention is the provision of an onion topper comprising a frame work in which is supported a pair of topping rollers and means for feeding onions or the like into engagement therewith and means for cleaning the topping rollers.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an onion topper in which the topping rollers are engaged by a pair of rotatable and longitudinally movable rollers which are adapted to engage the same for cleaning purposes.
A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eiiicient in use and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4& of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally my improved onion topper which comprises a supporting frame 11 0011- sisting of opposite side and end bars 12 and 13 supported by legs 14- which are in turn connected by braces 15.
A hopper 1.5 is supported by the frame 11 and carries rotatably mounted in its opposite ends a pair of topping rollers 16 and 17 arranged that their adjacent sides contact with each other.
The rollers 16 and 17 are formed with spirally arranged grooves 18 and 19 the former of which are substantially twice the same width and depth as the latter, while the axles 20 and 21 of the rollers are so connected by a pair of intermeshing spur pinions 22 that the roller 17 will be revolved at a slightly greater rate of speed than the roller 16.
A pair of guide plates 23 are secured to the upper edges of the side bars 12 and are formed with inwardly projecting flanges 2-1 upon which rests a pair. of endless belts 25. These belts 25 pass over suitable sprocket wheels 26 mounted adjacent the end bars 13, and over similar sprockets 27 supported by the lower extremities of the legs 14.
The inner sides of the bars 12 are provided with longitudinally extending grooves 28 in which are located for sliding movement therein, the opposite extremities of axles 29 which support brushes 30, the bristles of which engage the lower sides of rollers 16 and 17 for cleaning purposes, the shafts 29 are j ournaled in a frame 31 which has pivoted to its intermediate portion a lever 32, this lever 32 is connected intermediate its ends to one of the braces 15 and has attached to its lower extremities a link 33 which is eccentrically connected to a sprocketwheel 34 also mounted upon one of the braces 15. This sprocket wheel is connected by means of a chain 35 to a sprocket wheel 36 which meshes with one of the chains 25.
The chains 25 are connected by a plurality of transversely extending slats 37 which produce a conveyer, the said'slats being sub-' stantially triangular shaped in side elevation to conform to the shape of the rollers 16 and 17 and to feed the onions into engagement with their cont-acting faces.
The sprocket wheels 26 adjacent one end of the wheel are keyed to a shaft 38 which shaft is rotatably connected with the axle 20 as indicated by the numeral 39.
Any desired means of transmitting power is applied to the shaft 26 and obviously when this shaft is rotated, the conveyors operated and the onions feed into engagement with the rotating rollers 16 and 17. The tops of the onions will become engaged within the grooves 18 and 19 and severed therefrom after which they will be conveyed by the slats into a receptacle not shown in the drawings.
The operation of the shaft 38 manifestly causes the oscillation of the brushes 30 over the lower faces of the rollers 16 and 17 thereby moving all particles of refuse matter therefrom.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that an onion topper is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
,7 1. The combination in an onion topper of a pair of rotatable rollers provided with grooves, means for rotating the rollers, a conveyor engaging the rollers, a pair of oscillating brushes engaging the rollers and means for oscillating said brushes through the medium of the conveyer.
2. An onion topper such as described comprising a main frame, topping rollers rotatable therein, means for rotating the said rollers, oscillating brushes mounted in the frame and engagmg the said rollers, a supplemental frame connecting the brushes, a
lever pivoted to said frames, a sprocket wheel journaled upon the frame, a link connecting the sprocket Wheel and lever, a conveyer mounted upon the supplemental frame, and disposed above the rollers and means connecting the sprocket and the conveyer for oscillating the said brushes.
