This invention relates to certain new' and useful improvements in braidlng machine carriers, and the object of the invention 1s to provide improved latch means for the bob bin. V V A further object of the invention is to generally simplify, improve and increase the efliciency of the latching means, and to provide a construction in which the bobbin may T be removed by use of but one hand of the the weight 4 slides. The weight 4 is constructed to have, opposite guides which slidingly receive the standard 3, one of the guides 5 being enlarged as shown and provided with an inwardly extending foot 6. The body of the weight 4 is provided W'ltl]. a notch 7 in its bottom edge for the purpose of receiving the thread 8. The standard 3 is formed with a guide eye 9 through which i I the thread 8 passes, the latter then being extended downwardly between the standard 3 and the inner face of weight 4 and being passed through the slot 7 of the latter and then extending up along the length of the .standard and through the guide eye 10 at the top of the latter. The standard 3 is provided with outwardly extendlng' perfo ratedlugs 11 and 12 through the perforations of which a rod 13 is slidably passed. Rod 13'has a cotter pin 14 rigidly aflixed to its lower end and has a coiled spring 15 surrounding the samegthe lower end of the coiled spring abutting the cotter vpin and the upper end of the spring being for engagement with the under face of lug 12; A rectangular head 16 is rigidly secured to the upper end of rod 13 and carries a latch 17 at its outer end. ZWhen it -is desired re lace a -new-tobbin on the carrier or for any other purpose it is desired to remove the bobbin from the carrier, thebobbin is lifted by one hand of the operator carrying with the same the latch 17 and its associated parts against the tension of spring .13., until the lower face of the head 16 cccupies a position above the seat 19, whereupon the operator imparts a slight rotary movement to the bobbin toward the left, which will obviously cause one ofthe ratchet teeth 2 to move the latch 17 toward the right, causing the under face of the head 16 to overlie the seat 19 and allowing spring 13 to enter into action, drawing the head 16 down to the seat 19 and holding the latch locked in inoperative position.
In the operation'it will be understood that when tension is exerted on the end of the cord 8 above the guide .eye 10 the weight 4 will be lifted, bringing its foot 6 into engagement with the lower end of rod 13, raising the latter until the spring 15 contacts with the face of the lug 12 after which the movement will be against the *tension of the spring 15, permitting the bobbin to be rotated-until tension is released on cord 8 when the latch will bedrawn to normal position by the action of the spring 15 and the weight 4; ;Having thus described my invention, I
claim as newand desire to secure by Letters 1 ratchetteeth and a standard, lugs carried by the standard and having perforations, a rod extending through said perforations, a prov jection on the rod, a coiled spring sur rounding the rod and engaged between said projections and one of the lugs to normally exert downward tension on the rod, a'rec-' tangular head carried by the rod, a latch carried by the head, said standard havmg a right angular guide-way in which bhellead slides so as to have a non-rotating move ment, said standard having a seat above said guide way thereof to receive and engage said head when the latter is moved out of the guide-way and given a partial turn, and a weight havinga foot to engage the lower end of the rod to raise the latter.
3. In combination with a bobbin having ratchet teeth, latching means to engage the ratchet teeth, means to normally prevent rotation of said latching means, sald latching means being movable out of engagement with said means, and being rotatable when twat out of engagement with said last named means to be locked in inoperative position.
4. In combination with a bobbin having 20 ratchet teeth, s rin latching-means, means for providingagg'uide for the latching means which normally holds the latchin means againstrotation and means where y when the latching mea s is raised out of engage- 25 ment with said guide same will be held by said spring in inoperative position.
