To all whom tt may concern.- A

Beit known that I, MILTON J. FLREY, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridle-Bit and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which' will enableothers skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication.

The object ot' this invention is to provide.V suitable and e'icient means for securingv and controlling horses,

more especially designed for vicious and headstrong.

horses which cannot be controlled bythe ordinary-bit, or which have a habit of pulling and breaking away when hitched; and

It consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described. v

In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a front View of the bit showing the reins and bitching-strap attached.

Figure 2 is an end view of the same.

A is the bit or mouthpiece, constructed with a curved central bow, B. i

This bow is covered with rubber', gutta.perclia, or other equivalent substance, to prevent injury to the horses mouth, when th'e bow is pressed down.

C represents this covering.

I) D are rings, to which the ends jointed, as shown in the drawing.

E E are slides, jointed atvone end to the lower portion of the rings at the points F F.

The bow B stands upright in the horses mouth,

when the reins are loose in driving, and the slides also standnpright with the bow, but their top ends may bev drawn inward toward the bow, so as to press the v jaw' between them when the horse pulls upon the strap. This griping ofthe under jaw is so 'painful to the horse that he soon ceases his efforts to break the strap.

In driving the horse the slides E act as levers when the reins are drawn', and serve to press the bow B vdown upon the tongue with any force required to curb or control the horse.

If the horse is gent-le, and only requires guiding, t-he reins may be attached directly to the rings.

'Ihe bit is thus adapted to gentle as well as fractions horses.

In bitching the horse, if he has a habit of' pulling, the strap, being attached to one of the links G, is passed through the other link. When the strap is thus arranged, pulling gripes the jaw, with the result already mentioned. 4

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combination, with a bridle-bit, of the slides E E, links G G, and the bow B, when the same are arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. The rubber covering G on the bow B of the bit, substantially as and for the purposes described.
