Letters Patent No. 104,118, dated June 14, 1870.
nvneRovimvxzaw ,1N sNow-PLows.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. ,CHURCHMAIQ of the city of Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and use-4 ful Machine for the purpose of Clearing Railroad- Tracks of .Snow,'by means of an apron, revolving cylinders with anges, side guards, and combined machinery for running the car and keepingthe cylinders in motion, and I call said machine Monitor Snow- Plow. I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being hadto the annexed drawing, which is hereby made a part of this specification, and in which- Figure I-isV a perspective view of the entire machine, without thc'steam-enginc, necessary to drive the car and t-he machinei Figure II represents a plan view ofthe machine.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the front part of a railroad-truck with a at apron and two perpendicular cylinders with flanges and the sides with fenders.
lith the apron the snow is lifted from the track when the engine is in -motion and carried to the cylinders, which, being also in motion by means of usual gearing with the engine, throw the snow to the side or sides ofthe road, from whi ch it is pressed outward by the fenders on the sides. y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my truck and steam-engine in any of theknown forms, and construct thereonfwith suitable materials, a dat apron or lifter,in front, freprey sented by letter A, also aplatform to receive and carry the machinery.
I construct and place in position securely on the front part of the platform two cylinders with anges as represented by the letter B.
'lhese cylinders turn upon the Vertical axes H, with the bevel-gear wheels G fixed upon the upper end of the axes I-I, by which, in connection with the machinery and engine necessary for driving power, is secured a rotary motion of the cylinders, whereby the snow is received and thrown upon them by the apron, and is also distributed and thrown to the sides. A
.I also construct and place in a permanent position"l on each side ofthe truck a fender made of sui-table material and sufficiently strong to compress the snow after it is delivered from the cylinders. These fenders are represented by the letters D.
I place this machinery in a frame made of suitable materialsa-nd in the usual forms, and represented by letter E, all tobe covered bya roof, F, and the whole tobe used or `driven by a steamengine on the same truck.
i The operation is as follows:
i When the car is in motion, the snow is lifted on the apron'and thrown upon the cylinders, which are also in motion, andLby means of the -iianges, it is thrown outward on both or either sides, as inay be desired.
The fenders D on the sides prevent its return to the car or truck, and, it' necessary, these fenders or wings compress the snow.
What I claim as my invention is- A snow-plow, consisting of the apron A, the vertical cylinders B, and the fenders D, the whole combined and operated in the manner set forth, v
