To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST Scrmnrrnn, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Franktfort-on-the-Main, in the Kingdom of Prussia and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Douches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an apparatus for the production of an air blast, and the object of the invention is to so construct and arrange the several parts to produce a very stable portable device by which an air blast may be created and applied as desired, the temperature of the blast being regulated in such a manner, for example, as that explained in Letters-Patent No. 999,880, granted to me August 8, 1911. Devices for this purpose have been heretofore constructed in such a manner that the blower or tan was housed within a casing provided with a handle, electric conductors and a blast pipe, and could be used as a hand-apparatus, or compressed air was produced in a distant plant and conducted to the places of use, for instance, into barber shops or clinics where stable devices such as head-supports, hair receptacles, etc., were arranged. I'Iandapparatuses have only a narrow range of use fulness, as the weight to be mastered by the human arm is limited, and the stationary plants are impracticable in many cases, owing to their immobility and the cost of installation.
The present invention presents a device which will furnish any desired quantity of air without being restricted as to mobility, and in which the fan connected with an electric motor is placed upon a supporting stand in common with the head support, the hairreceptacle, etc., the masses being advantageously distributed over the device so that a high degree of stability is attained.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete apparatus. Fig. 2 shows the connection between the air delivery tube and the nozzle. Figs. 3 and L are views taken at right angles to each other showing the connection between the fan casing and the hair receptacle or support. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the hair receptacle or support. Fig. 6 is a section through the hair support or receptacle on the line A B.
In carrying out my present invention, I employ a base a from which rises a standard consisting of a fixed tube 7) within which a movable tube (1 is slidably or telescopically mounted, the said inner movable tube being secured at any desired height by means of a set screw as indicated at a: and as will be readily understood. On the upper end of the inner tube (2 is secured a casing cl, which is preferably of spherical form and within which the fan or blower is housed. The discharge tube (1 extends from the casing (Z and has a threaded extremity 6 shown in Fig. 2, upon which a nozzle 9 is fitted. The discharge tube a is preferably flexible so that the nozzle g may be moved freely in any direction and the air blast thereby directed to any particular point, the nozzle being of such form that it may be easily grasped.
My device is intended more particularly for use as a hair drier and for this purpose I provide a hair-support, shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 6, into which the air from the tan or blower may be directed, so as to escape to and through the hair placed upon the support and drive oil the moisture therefrom. The base a with the telescopic standard I) c rising therefrom may be moved to any posi tion in the room and the lady whose hair is to be dried, may be seated upon a chair placed convenient to the hair-dresscl"s work table, so that the hair may be placed upon the receptacle without causing any strain upon the head or neck of the customer. The hair-support is constructed in such a manner as to be readily separated into its component parts in order that it may be cleaned or repaired when necessary and of light material so that it may be disposed in the position most convenient to the operator without disturbing the equilibrillm of the device. The hair-support consists of an upper body or rim it having its lower edge turned inwardly, as clearly shown at h in Fig. 6, to engage a longitudinal groove K: in the side edges of the lower body or pan i whereby the parts may be readily slid longitudinally, so as to be connected or detached. A screen or perforated plate Z is arranged within the bottom of the rim 7:, so as to cover the pan or lower member 2' of the hair-support and serve as a plate upon which the hair may be spread after being shampooed. A rest m in the form of a yoke having a concave outer side may be fitted in the rim of the hairsupport, so as to bear against the neck or head of the customer, and thereby support the same so as to prevent the muscles of the neck from becoming fatigued while the hair to the air discharge tube 6 so that the air may be directed into the hair-support through a short tube at disposed at an angle to the air discharge tube 6. One end of this connecting tube n is secured to the end of the pan 2' while the opposite end thereof is formed as a part of a short nipple or ecu-- pling p rotatably fitting over the spout 0 of the casing 05 and also fitting into the end of the air discharge tube 6, this construction permitting the discharge tube or hose to be turned freely in all directions so that the nozzle or handle may be brought to any desired point without afiecting the stability of the apparatus. A notch 1", shown in Fig. 3, is formed in the spout so that by turning the connecting pipe n into or out of registry with the said notch, the air may be permitted to flow into the hair-support or be partly or wholly cut off therefrom as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
1. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, an air conveyer having an opening in its Wall, a coupling fitted to rotate around of air through the latter.
2. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination with a blower casing,
and a blower therein, of a discharge spout on the casing having a lateral opening, a nipple fitting over said discharge spout, an air conveyer fitting over said nipple, a tube extending laterally from the said nipple and adapted to register with the opening in the spout, and a receptacle carried by said lateral tube.
3. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of a pan, a rim slidably fitted on the said pan, a perforated support within the rim covering said pan, and means for directing the air current into the an. P In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
