This invention relates to combined excaj vating and levee building machines.
The invention has for its, object the pro vision of a machine adapted to be moved from place to place as the work progresses which has, first, booms arranged in a new manner in connection with an excavating bucket and a traveling receiving car. or bucket whereby earth excavated at one point may be dumped into the receiving car and deposited to form an embankment or. levee; further, to provide a novel elevating device which will assist the bucket in dumping its load into the conveying car or bucket.
The invention has for a further object the provision of booms on opposite sides of the machine, combined with an excavating bucket carried by one of the booms and means for disposing it at any point of the length of the boom and manipulating it as desired, and, the provision on the other boom of a car or conveyor mounted in a new manner, together with operating means for the boom and for the car.
I am aware that it has been heretofore proposed to employ an excavating dipper or bucket arranged and adapted to be drawn up an incline and to dump into a m vable car, and I do not claim that construction broadly but, so far as I am aware, I am the first to provide the traveling platform or conveyor for assisting the bucket in dump- .ing its contents into the car and, further, to arrange the booms on opposite sides of the machine and the excavating bucket and con- 'veyer car on the respective booms so that a channel .may be excavated on one side of the machine and the earth removed during such operation and transferred to the car and used to build a levee or embankment on i the opposite side of the machine; further, I believe myself to be the first to mount the bucket and the car, respectively, on' the booms in the manner set forth hereinafter In the accompanying drawings :-Figure' 1 is-a plan of the complete machine; Fig. 2,: a side elevation; Fig. 3, an enlarged detail I showing the manner in which the traveling car is mounted on its boom; Fig. l, a cross section showing the manner in which the ex cavating bucket carriage travels on its boom; Fig. 5, an enlarged front elevation looking toward the left hand side of Fig. 2, the boom being in section; and Fig. 6, a cross The operative parts of the machine may be carried by any suitable frame-work or traveling carriage mounted on rollers or skids, as shown at 1 and 2, and this carriage may be self-propelling in any desired manner or pulled along from place to place as found desirable by a drum 8 having cables i (Fig. (3) which are secured to any suitable anchoring devices. The drum may be driven from one of the engines or by any suitable means.
Extending out from opposite sides of the frame-work or carriage are booms 5 and 6 which are pivoted to the frame-work so that they may be raised and lowered as desired, such movements being controlled by cables 7 and 8 operated from any suitable drums run by the engine '9 or in any desired manner. The booms may be extensible to enable thom to be lengthened or shortened.
The boom 5 is-of the cross sectional shape shown in Fig. 4, being com osed of an intermediate timber 10 and ciannel irons 11 bolted thereto. Other constructions could be resorted to provided the tracks or flanges 12 are arranged on opposite sides of the boom as they constitute tracks for the carriage 13 which supports the scoop or scraper 14, the carriage being provided with wheels or rollers 15 hearing on said tracks 12.2md also having a sheave loover which the cable 17 passes that suspends the excavating scoop or scraper i l and .by which said scoop or scraper may be tilted or raised or let out as desired. A friction drum 1.8 on the engine 9 which is of well known construction, atfords means for takingup or letting out the cable 17. Another friction drum 19 controls a cable .20 by which the scoop or scraper 14 may be ulled toward the machine or let out, accorcing to the requirements of the work.
The carriage 13 is drawn to and fro on the boom 5 by a cable 21 which passesaround a sheave 22 on the .end of the boom. Suitable drums 23 operated by engine 9, operate the cable 21 and afford means whereby the to be capable of rotation thereabout. After the parts are assembled in operative position the end of the wire is bent or otherwise deformed to securely rivet these parts in place. The wire 7 is preferably made of a more or less resilient material and provided with a bent portion 13 adapted to co-act with cover 1 so as normally to exert pressure upon the carbon clip 8 to hold the same in engagement with the sheet of paper on which it rests.
The manner of use of this device is substantially as follows: Assuming the book to be held in substantially the position shown in Fig. 1, with the original sheet resting upon the carbon sheet, and it is desired to insert the carbon sheet between the leaves of another set, by pressing down on flange 11 the carbon paper clip with the paper carried thereby is raised to the position shown by the dotted lines, displacing the original sheet previously resting thereon. The leaves of the various sets may then be rapidly turned backward or forward until the desired set is reached, whereupon the carbon clip will be permitted to fall back into normal position and the device is again ready for use. Resilient means may be employed for returning the clip to normal position, although it is believed that the same is unnecessary for the satisfactory operation of the device. It may also be understood that the flange 11 may be placed at either the right or left hand side of the sales book angles hdlder, to be operated by the thumb or fingers, as desired, or for the convenience of either a right or left-handed writer.
Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 3, the sales book holder is substantially the same as that in the embodiment already described. Secured to the lower end of the cover or holder is a wire 14 bent at right to extend across the end of the cover or holder and run parallel to one of the sides thereof. This wire 1 1 is secured to the cover by suitable means such as fasteners 15. At the farther end of the wire 14 is pivoted a carbon holding clip 8, substan tially the same as that above described, having at one end a projecting flange 16 adapted to be engaged by the thumb or fingers of the operator. It will be obvious that if desired the transverse portion of the wire 14 may be journaled atthe upper instead of the lower end of the holder.
It may be noted that although the devices here shown are mounted upon a sales book cover or holder oft a well-known type and possess certain advantages in combination therewith, nevertheless in cerned, anydesirednform of mounting may be provided for the clip 8 and its associated parts, and the term sales book holder is used herein in a broad sense to denote any 1 versely across said cover,
I so far as the broader features of the invention are con member associated with a sales book and adapted to serve as a mounting for a device of this nature.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings sh all be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A manifolding device comprising a cover, a resilient member having two portions, one of said portions extending along an edge of said cover, the other of said portions being journaled and extending transand a clip disposed to rotate about the portion of said resilient member extending along the pad and to be raised upon'rotation about said member.
