U. B. KLINB.
JOINTED SPRING GUARD N0. 104,039. Patented June '7, 1870.

diluted sum patent epic.
.Tlettcrs Patent No. 104,039, dated June 7, 1870 emtcdutezl J unc 3, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN J'OINTED SPRING-GUARD.
'The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, URIAS B. Kmsnmf Reamstown, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvauia, have invented certain Improvements in Staying Elliptic Springs on Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
.The nature and object of my invention is to guard or twisting of elliptic springs so liable to break them on striking a large stone orgutter in the road, to which end various devices have been and guides, differing substnntiully from my jointed guard or stay-rod.
The accompanying drawing clearly shows the construction and application of my invention.
Figure 1 shows the construction of my triple-jointed stay-rod A B O D, with its foot-plate E and upright F.
. This plate is bolted firmly to the coupling G, fig. 2.
The three shouldered joints 0, b, and c.
Figure 2, a side view illustrating part.
The dotted lines show the relative position when the spring is up, and when pressed down in a vertical of the rodare marked the operation in course indicated by the dotted lines from d to d.
The terminal piece D is so constructed as to adapt it, with the supporting cross-piece d, to the under side or top of the spring H, and will yield sufficiently to allow the springs to play freely up and down on smooth roads, and yet stay it as firmly as a fixed brace.
In order to prevent swaggiug laterally, twisting,
' purpose specified.
or to swing backward and forward, from which cause the most damage is done to springs, the joints a I: 0
are brought into requisition in proportion as the conncctiou with the spring is borne down more or less, and yield to accommodate the rod 'or stay to the vertical motion of the springs H.
vertical motion, and effectually guarding and preventing the springsfrom twisting laterally, and, consequently, of marked utility; besides, when ascending or descending a. hill, this kind of brace prevents the pressure on the springs of the weight within the WP hicle or the body of the vehicle itself, when inclined vaccording to the angle or inclination of the hill, and
thereby perform an important function to relieve the springs from such pressure in front or rear.
What I claim as my invention is- The combined jointed stay or guard A B U D, with its footwpiece E 1 applied in the manner and for the URIAS B. KLINE.
