HENRY C. MILLER, `OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
To all whom z't may concern:v 4 Be it known that I, HENRY C. MILLER, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of 'l\,/[ilw'a1kee, in the county of Milwaukee and eflicient loose-leafxbinders, each having in` the frame thereof certain advantageous novel features of construction, especially a box in which to cover and hold down folding sections of post-members that are`preferably made to provide seats. for one of a pair of parallel bar-members, as well as to prevent the turning of the posts in the bars and to facilitate manipulation of their folding sections. 1
The binder herein shown also discloses a 'spring-compressor Ifor bound leaves and meansfor holding the compressor out of working-position to facilitate the inserting of leaves invlaid binder or their removal from'the same.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a partly sectionalI view of a loose-leaf binder frame in which the 'novel features of my invention are embodied, the plane of the section being-indicated byline 1--1 in the igure'that is next in numerical order; Fig. 2, a planview of the box-bar member of the frame'uncovered and'other `parts of said frame therewith, the keeper of the hinged -cover portion of the bar being shown -in horizontal-section engaged by a lockingrod; Figs, 3 and 4 detail sectional views respectively indicated by lihes 3-3 and 4--4 y in Fig. 1, ancl Fig.'5, an elevation o f apostmember extending section partly ,broken away.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 6 indicates onev and 7 the other of a pair of parallel bars ofmy improved binder-frame.'
The bar 7 is necessarily hollow, andthe bar specification of Letter'sratet.. Application filed March 27, 1911. Serial No. 617,072.

Each `of the in rule-jointunion or otherwise articulated down into the box aforesaid where Vitisheld is such that there is nol leverage 'of the folding-section thereof upon the adjacent bar ,inde'linitely extended by m'ea'n's of'sections tensible posts being .common in theiart of -ratndoeha 1912.

However it is to be noted'that the 4 jointing and disposition of sa'id-post-sections when said folding'section is' swung down. 'It is also-to be noted that the posts may be similar to the one `14" shown byvFig. 6, ex-- the covers `being shown, lby dotted lines, in Fig.v 2. The upper'portion7 of the bar 7 is a cover-piece for the remainder4 of said The post-members of thebinderframe ex- ,A

osed by heads of screws 15 that -engage'the owermostjsec'tions vof the posts,`and these osts having .lower sections fthereof; V rigid 1n the lower vbarof the'v binder. \The post- -sections' 14, are ShQwn. horizontally 'shoul-i dered and flattened ony 'oneside adjacent to their .rule-joint Qu'nions -with thexpostsec' lit theangular portions o 'f the post-sections first aforesaid. and preferably .thickened tions 14 are alsoflattened tovmatch-the ap.
i' ertures :inthe bar 7, and the; post-sections 14 of. which latter they form l'oo ntinuations whenswung up. Because of the angular lit of the bindereposts in the bar 7, .said'postsare-prevented from" turning;` .'Io provide fer ready manipulation ofthe4 folding section of each post, the freeouter'end of the same is pointed so that va linger of .the operator may be readily inserted "under the point to elevate said post-sectionand said point may vbeupon a stop-cap 17 in screwthread connection with this post-section of which it forms a part,` as herein shown., Loose on the post-sections 14 below the lstop-seats 16-.of the same is a' leaf-compressor plate 18, and riveted or otherwise fastened to `this plate, midway of its ends,
` is' thevr central portion vof a Vflat spring 19 having the ends thereof inl oppositionv to the underside of the bar 7. A notched stem 20, rigid withthe plate, midway of its ends extends upward throughthe spring and the bottom of the adjacent bar, its
upper end beingpreferablybeveled to read-v ily clear a latch 21 pivoted to said bar inside the. same and held .against the stem by asuitably arranged spring 22 that expands to engage the latch with the stems notch 20 when opportunity is-aflorded. By the engagement of the stem by the latch, the compressor-plate is held out of working position so that leaves' may be readily inserted in the binder or withdrawn from the same, and to limit throw of the latchby expansion of the spring22, when the bar 7 is clear of saidstem, a stop 23 is arranged .in said bar. The compressor plate having been locked out of working position, theI boxbar 7 therewith will be limited in its descent upon the post-sections 14 by the stop-seats 16 of the same, and the same result loccurs if said plate is binder.
As is usual in the art, my improved binder-` framewill be covered with leather or other bookbinding material, the binding being employed to extend said post-s'`v of whichthe'y" are "virtually sections' and common in the art aforesaidf 'It is* .practical and yalso old `in thefart .to employ tions therein.
