Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 7, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. KLooKo, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Chicago, in the county of Chicago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire Escapes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention. relates to fire escapes, and has for its object to provide a fire escape of. the platform. type, whichwill include a platform movable vertically, and will include also means for moving the platform.
Another object is to provide a structure which will be such that the platform may be held at any point of its movement, and which will also be such that the rate of descent of the platform may be controlled.
Another object is to provide an automatic means for regulating the rate of descent.
Other objects and advantages will be found in the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the various views :Figure 1 is an elevational view of the present invention attached to a building; Fig. 2, is a top plan; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, is a detailed view showing the connection be tween the guide wheels and the brake mecha- I11SII1.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a building to which there are attached a pair of outwardly extending brackets 7, having rollers 8 mounted therein as illustrated in Fig. 2. Cables 9 are connected with the ends of the platform 10, and these cables are extended over the rollers 8, and carried down to the platform. Upon the platform there are mounted bearing blocks 12, in which there is journaled a horizontal shaft 11. This shaft projects beyond one of'the bearing blocks as indicated at 13, and has mounted thereon a brake drum 14. This brake drum is surrounded by a brake band 15 with which there is connected a hand lever 16 pivoted to the platform and applicable to set the brake.
Mounted upon the shaft 11 between the bearing blocks 12, there are a pair of drums 15 to which the cables 9 are secured, and
rotation of these drums will wind the cable thereupon, or unwind it therefrom, according to the direction of such rotation. The opposite end of the shaft 11 from the brake drum 14 is j ournaled in the opposite bearing block, as will be understood, and adjacent thereto the shaft carries a gear 17, which is one of a train communicating with a gear 18 on the shaft 18 also journaled in the bearing blocks and extending oppositely beyond the sides thereof, this shaft 18 having at its outer end a fly wheel 19, provided with a handle 20 by which it may be turned.
Mounted upon the side of the plat-form 10 which lies adjacent to the building there are a pair of members 21 which extend diagonally outwardly, and these members 21 have connected therewith other diagonal members 22 which extend across the platform and are secured to the opposite side thereof. J ournaled at the free end of these two members 21 and 22 there is a wheel 23, and these wheels are adapted to rest against the surface of the building, thus preventing the platform from cutting into the building during its downward movement. As will be understood, the fly wheel may be rotated to turn the drums and wind the cables thereupon to raise the platform, and that, when it is desired to descend the rate of descent may be controlled by the brake 15.
Mounted adajcent to each of the wheels 23, and upon a shaft rotatable in a bracket,
secured to the members 21 and 22, this shaft being indicated at 24 and the bracket at 25, there is a clutch disk 26, which carries a drum 27, and mounted upon this shaft and in frictional contact with the wheel 23, there is a centrifugal device, indicated at 28, and carrying a clutch disk 29, which is brought into engagement with the clutch disk 26 of the drum 27 when the wheel has reached a predetermined speed. This drum 27 has connected therewith a cable 30 which is secured to the brake handle 16, and thus when the rate of descent of the platform becomes too great, the brake is automatically applied.
Mounted upon the shaft 11, adjacent to one of the bearing blocks there is a ratchet pinion 31, and pivoted to the bracket adjacent thereto there is a lever 31' carrying dog 32 arranged adjacent to the ratchet pinion to hold the same stationary.
From the foregoing the operation of the invention Will be clear Without additional description.
What is claimed is:
