To all whom'v'it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES L. EICHELE, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust- 'ers for Vacuum-Cleaners; vand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to dusters, more particularly to dusters designed to be used in connection with vacuum cleaners. v
An object of the present invention is to provide a feather duster for dusting fragile china and other valuable articles,
A furtherl object is to provide a hollow handle and wire mesh protector forthe inlet end thereof,that may be applied to ordinary feather dusters now in use without extensive alterations.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a handle that may be readily disconnected to facilitate cleaning and further will be so constructed as to outlive several duster heads, the duster being so constructed as to prevent packing together of the feathers due to suction through the hollow handle so that the article being dusted is more thoroughly dusted than with devices of this character hitherto constructed.
With the above objects in view the invention resides specifically in the hollow handle and protectorv hereinafter described, and more generally in the novel details of construction and combination parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.-
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a lon gitudinal sectional view lthrough a duster constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the duster with the feathers removed.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a tubular handle preferably formed of aluminium or similar'V light non-rusting material, the'handle being externally threaded lat one end as shown at 11 to facilitate connection with the flexible coupling carried by the usual vacuum cleanlng mechanism (not shown). The opposite end of the handle is internally threaded and receives an externally threaded short tube 12. A reticulate or wire mesh globular protector 13 formed of intersecting circles of wire is arranged upon the exposed end portion of the tube 12, the terminals of the wires forming this protector being inserted through suitable openings in the tube and then clenched as shown. A circular stock 14 is provided centrally with a suitable opening to snugly receive the handle 10, and is provided with the usual duster feathers, these feathers surrounding the protector and projecting considerably therebeyond.
ln dusting china and similar fragile articles, by virtue of the globular contour of the protector, the feathers will be so spread apart at their secured ends by the protector, that' there will be a considerable space in alinement with the handle that will be free from feathers as is indicated in Fig. 1, this space permitting of air being freely drawn through the handle, the feathers dislodging particles of dust from the article as the duster travels over the article and the draft through the handle sucking the dust through the protector andhandle as will be readily understood. By virtue ofthe globular contour of the protector, packing of the feathers over the leading end of the protector is prevented, so that the article is more thoroughly dusted than with similar devices of this l character.
By virtue of the.threaded tube 12 the protector may from time to. time be removed from the handle to facilitate cleaning of the handle and protector without entirely disconnecting the duster head from the handle.
What is claimed, is
A duster including a hollow lhandle having one end portion adapted for engagement with a vacuum cleaning mechanism, a substantially globular're'ticulate protector formed of intersecting circles of Wire,a hollow stem attached to said protector and removably engaged in the bore of said handle, and a duster stock surrounding s'aid handle yand having a exilole dusting 'element sur.- rounding and progecting considerably beyond said protector.
