EYEGLASSES.
1,040,105, Specification of Letters Patent. Patented O01; 1, 191?,
, Application filed October 6, 1911. Serial No. 653,214.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO F. An'r, of Albany,
ing a removable'bridge, and it'has for its ob ect to provide a simple and efficient mode of securing together the bridge and lens attaching portions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a firm and serviceable bearing for the guard lever that will maintain it against movement in any but its intended plane of operation. v
To these and other ends the' invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of an eyeglass constructed in ac-- cordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention, the left hand guard lever and its actuating spring being removed Fig. 2 is a top plan View; Fig. 8 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a collective view showing the various parts in perspective in a manner suggesting the method of assembling. I Similar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate the same parts. I
By Way of briefly explaining what is meant by stud eyeglass, it maybe said that this term is used in the trade to desig nate one in which the bridge is removable as a unit from the rest of the mounting, so that with an eyeglass of a given design the Optician in fitting the nose of the patient is enabled to use any of a plurality. of interchangeable bridges of different lengths and shapes, and after selecting a bridge of proper size and contour may quickly assemble the I rest, of, the, mounting, which is'the same in each case, about it asfa' nucleus In the practice of my present invention, I provide such a bridge 1,, and lens attaching portions,
comprising in the present embodiment" the usual ears 2 for the lens screw and edgeengaging ears 3, and as the mode of attaching each end of the bridge to one oi the lens attaching devices is the same, a description of one side'of the mounting will sufiice for both. In this view, one of the parts, in-the present instance the lens attaching portion, is provided with a box embodying a horizontal top wall 4 and vertical side walls 5 proceeding downwardly therefrom. The box so formed is adapted to receive a preferably similarly shaped attaching portion 6 on the other member or bridge that-is inserted therein in a lateral direction, and being rigidly supported against; movement forwardly and rearwardly by the side wallsof' the box, is clamped in place against disengagement through the open bottom opposite 5 the top horizontal wall by a suitable fastene'r 7. This fastener, in the present instance, embodies a headed screw that passes through an opening 8 in the top wall dot the box, and has an intermediate portion 9 that is threaded into an aperture 10 in the attaching portion 6 of the bridge. Above the threaded portion is a shoulder 11 that, i abuts against the exterior of the wall it" and aids in drawing the parts-closely toget-her. i
A nose guard of any suitable desi n-of the type mentioned, may be em loyed I prefer to construct it with a at intermediate bearing portion 12, having an aperture 13 therein for the pivot, the forwardly extending finger portion being indicated at 14 and the nose engaging portion at 15. The
coiiperating portions of the bridge and lens attaching portions form a support for the lever and the fastener 7 is utilized as a pivot. To this end, the lower extremity of the latter beyond the threaded portion 9 is reduced,
as indicated at 16, and projects downwardly beneath the said support so that the shoulder-17 thereon, that is formed at the uncture of the reduced portion 16 and the ,but
threaded portion 9, lies flush with the underside of the attaching portion 6 of the bridge and with the lower edges of the side walls 5 of the box. The aperture 13 in the lever 12 receives the reduced portion 16 of the fastener and one side of the lever, as the latter turns on the fastener assu pivot, is pro vided with an extended bearing by the-ad jacent surfaces of the shoulder 17, the attaching. portion 6 of the bridge and the walls 5 of the box, It is held against this hearing by the engagement with its opposite side of a projection 18, arranged in the present instance on the lens attaching portion. This projection presents a broad bearing surface also, parallel with that on the, support and preferably coextensive,so that in efiect a laterally opening pocket 19 is provided in which the lever may be inserted .edgewise or, 1 transversely before the fastener 7 is applied,
and then secured by the latter as the f'as tener advances during the process offastening the bridge and lensv attaching portions together. The spring 20 for actuating the lever toward the nose is removed from the vicinity of the lever and preferably mount edon the fastener 7 In the present embodiment it is coiled about the latter to be retained between the head thereof and the wall. 4 of the box with one end hooked at 21 to cooperate with theguard 12 while the other end 22 engages the bridge or any convenient portion of the support. The ,re-
moval of the fastener thus reduces the mounting to its component parts attaching I the bridge lens attaching portions spring and guard. The'reduced end 16 preferably continues through the guard lever an aperture 23 in the projection 18.
- that the construction above described en ables the guard to be readily positioned duringtassemtling, and when in its position within. thepocket it so supports the securing portion 6 on the bridge within the box on the lens attaching portion that the parts;
are easily held against disarrangement during, the insertion of the fastener, and furthermore, as the spring 20 may be first applied to the fastener to come into place with .theapplication of the latter, its ends are easily interlocked with both the uard lever s and a statlonary part without distortion of veither the spring or the lever, as is necessary in a great many mountings.
I claim asmy invention:
1. In eyeglasses, the combination with a lens attaching portion and a bridge separate-therefrom, of a fastener for securingsaidparts together extending through both" of them, a shoulder, on the fastener acting against one side of one of them, a bearing" -port1on on. the fastener extending beyond v the opposite side of both,

In eyeglasses, the combination with a lens; attaching portion and a bridging portion separate therefrom, of a fastener for securing said parts together to form a support and having, portions projecting from opposite sides of both of them,a shoulder on one -such projecting portion spaced from the support, a spring coiled about the same between ,the shoulder and support and a guard lever pivoted .on the other projecting portion and actuated by the spring.
6,'In eyeglasses, the combination with a lens attaching portion and a bridging portion, one of said parts being provided with abox having vertical side walls and a horizontal wall, the side opposite the latter being open, and the other part being provided.
with an attaching portion adapted to lie within the box, of a projection on one of the parts arranged in spaced relation to the open side of the box and a guard lever operating between such projecting ortion and the edges of the vertical walls 0 the box.
7. In eyeglasses, the combination with a lens attaching portion and a bridge separate therefrom, of a fastener for securing said parts together extendin through one of them and having a threa ed portion engaging the other, said fastener'being prov ded with a cylindrical reduced portion beyond the threaded portion and a guard lever pivoted on. such reduced portion.
