To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDDIE J. Po'rvIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moosup, in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Drawing-Board, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drawing or drafting boards, and has for its` object to provide an improved board of this character embodying a rotating auxiliary board `disposed wit-hin the main board and adapted to carry the drawing paper or the like, and a straight edge mounted upon the main board and slidable over the yauxiliary board, whereby the drawing paper'may be swung to any desired angle relative to the straight edge, thus dispensing with the customary triangles and protractors.
To theabove and other ends, this invention is illustrated in the combination and construction of parts elicited in the following description and pointed out inthe apf pended claims, it being understood that this device is susceptible of alteration and deviations in its details within the scope of the appended claimswithout departing `from the spirit of the invention.
The preferred embodiment of the inven tion is embodied in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a drawing board embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof, partly shown in section. Fig.\3 is a fragmental perspective of I a detail.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the main board is designated by the` numeral 5, the same being rectangular in contour and constructed of wood or other similar material. This board 5 is provided with a circular opening 31 having an upper annular rabbet 30 and an auxiliary. upper annular rabbet 29 next outside the said rabbet 30,`
and a rotatable circular auxiliary board 24 is disposed in the opening 31 and tits inthe rabbet 30. A ring 21 litsl inthe auxiliary rabbet 29 and is provided with suitable graduations designating various degrees. A pointer or index 22 is secured to and is carried by the auxiliary board 24 and projects beyond the edge thereof to coperate with the graduations on the ring 21 thereby desfignating the angle to which the auxiliary board 24 is swung relative to the main board 5., A knob 23 is secured to the auxiliary board 24 adjacent the pointer 22and is `pref.d erably in the form of a screw passing through the `inner end of the pointer 22 and taking into the` auxiliary board 24 to retain the pointer in position.
Acone shaped spider 27 is securedto the bottom of thel main board 5 below the open-` ing 31 and a cone shaped spider 28 is arranged within and pivoted to the said spider 27 andis secured to the bottom of theA auxiliary board24. The spidery 27 has a ring 32V having arabbet 33 and the spider 28 has a ring 34 fittingV in the said rabbet 33 to assist in retaining the boards 5 and 24 in the same plane and flush at their upper faces. The spider' 27 is also provided with a hub 3.6 andthe other spider 28 isprovided with a depending pintle 35 fitting in and projecting through the said hub 36 having a nut 33 or other securing member screw-threaded or secured upon the lower end thereof to bear against the lower end of the hub 36. The hub 36 is provided with a plurality of legs 37 which are adapted to rest uponwthe base for the drawing board to support the drawing board, or the said legs, may be secured to the base or any other object. The spider 28 is pivotedto the spider. 27 by means of the pintle` 35 which fits into the hub 36, which permits. the auxiliary board 24 to be readily rotated or revolved relative to the main l board 5.
A rod,11 is mountedonthe main board 5 at one end thereof, the ends of the rod 11 j being turned downwardly. and being secured to the board 5 by means of suitablextures 10. A V-shaped bracket 14 is slidably and ,fpivotallyr mounted on the rod 11, the rod lj11 passing through the outer ends of the arms of the said bracket and a straight edge l or` ruler 2() is securedto theicrotch of the said bracket to be carried `by the bracket and Ito slide over the auxiliary board 24. A ypiece 13 connects the arms of the bracket 14 and has an arm 15 projecting therefrom and passing under the rod 11. A U-shaped leaf spring 12 has its extremities secured to the piece 13 and' has the intermediate portion thereof bearing against the rod 11, the s ring 12 having an outward tension to frictionally engage the rod 11 to retain the straight-edge at any position to which it is slid. A scale 6 is mounted on the board 5 on the side opposite the straight-edge 2O and is arranged parallel to the rod l1, the said scale having a plurality of graduations 7 8 and 9 according to any desired standards of measurement and scale. A plate or other similar` member 16 is hinged to the outer or free end of the arm 15 and has the pointers 17, 18 and 19 coperating with the respective graduations 7, 8 and 9, whereby the straightedge 20 may be adjusted accordingto any of these graduations.
In use, the drawing paper, or other material 25 is mounted upon the auxiliary board 24 by means of the usual thumb tacks 26 or other suitable means, and the mechanical, structural or other drawing may be readily made upon the drawing paper 25 in the usual fashion, the straight-edge 20 being slidable over the drawing paper, and
the auxiliary board 24 being rotatable or revoluble to swing t-he drawing paper 25 at any desired angle relative to the straightedge for drawing angular lines or the like, the adjustment of the auxiliary board 24 about its axis being expedited by means of the pointer 22 cooperating with the graduated ring 21. In this manner it will be seen that this invention obviates the necessity of the usual triangles and protractors, which are more or less cumbersome in the use thereof. The straight-edge 2O being slidably and pivotally mounted upon the rod 11 may be swung to and from the auxiliary board 24 when desired or necessary. When the straight-edge 2O is swung upward to free the auxiliary board 24 and the drawing paper from any obstruction, as for instance, when using a compass or the like, the member 16 swings relative to the arm 15 of the bracket 14 permitting the bracket 14 to swing upward and the spring 12 tending to retain the straight-edge at any position to which it is swung. The member 16 in being hinged to the arm 15 also swings against the scale 6 whereby the pointers 17. 18 and 19 eoperate with the graduations 7, S and 9 when the straight-edge is swung against the auxiliary board 24.
In the above manner, the object aimed at has been attained in a convenient, simple and efficient manner and a drawing board constructed in accordance with the present invention will be found beneficial for the various uses to which it may be put.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A drawing board embodying a main board, a rotatable auxiliary board therein, a straight edge slidably and pivotally mounted upon the main board to be slidable over the auxiliary board and to be swingable to and from same, a scale on the main board, and a member hingedly connected to the pivoted end of the straight edge and having a pointer coperating with the said scale.
2. A drawing board embodying a main board having a circular opening, a rotatable circular auxiliary board disposed in the said opening, a rod on the main board, a bracket slidably and pivotally mounted on the said rod, a' straight edge carried by the bracket to be slidable over and to be swingable to and from the auxiliary board, a scale on the main board having a plurality of graduations, and a member hinged to the bracket and having pointers to coperate with the respective graduations.
3. A drawing board embodying a main board having a circular opening, a rotatable circular auxiliary board disposed in the said opening, a rod on the main board, a bracket slidable and pivot-ally mounted on the rlod and having an arm proj ecting` under the rod, a straight edge carried by the bracket to be slidable over and to be swingable to and from the auxiliary board, a scale on the main board on the side of the rod opposite the straight edge and having a plurality of graduations, and a member hinged to the said arm and having pointers to cooperate with the respective graduations.
4. A drawing board embodying a` main board, a rotatable auxiliary board therein, a rod on the main board, a bracket slidably and pivotally mounted on the said rod, a straight edge carried by the bracket to be slidable over and to be swingable to and from the auxiliary board, and a U-shaped leaf spring secured at its extremities to the bracket and having its intermediate portion in engagement with the said rod to retain the straight edge in any position.
