To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lunwio GUBA, a sub ject oi the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Dejwitz, near Prague, Bohemia, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llleans for Securing Railway-Rails,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to pro vide a clamping device for securing railway rails, consisting of two parts adapted to be adjusted relatively to one another, so as to exert a jamming and wedging action, one of which parts bears against the rail head and the other both against the rail foot and also against the means for attaching the rail to the sleepers, such as spikes, treenails and the like.
The invention intended to prevent the rails shifting, the track spreading on curves, the spikes 'or treenails being forced or drawn out or loosened, the means, for securing the rail and also the bed plate or ground plate and the rail foot being knocked out laterally, as for example being ground or worn oil, the bed phte being prematurely pressed into the sleeper, more particularly where soft sleepers are used, and generally to improve the track structure by providing an. absolutely solid and compact attachmentof the rails to the sleepers.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which it is shown by way of exainple:-- Figure 1 being a cross section; and Figs. 2 and 3 side views of a rail provided in each case with anexample of construction of the improved rail clamp; while Iiig. 4: is a cross section; and Fig.5, aside v ew of another form of construct-ion of the" rail clamp in combination with a railway rail.

two clamps are very similar, the principal difference being that the clamp shown in Fig. 1 at the left of the rail and in Fig. 2, is adapted to cooperate with two spikes; while the clamp shown in Fig. 1 at the right of the rail and in Fig. 3, is intended. to cooperate with a single spike. 7

Between the memb'ers'a and b are screw' bolts-d d which are mounted in the member a and project into recesses e e in the-mem her I). These bolts [1 d carry nuts f f which engage the top of the member I) and serve to adjust the efi'ective length of the bolts (i (Z in order to vary the distance between the members a and Z). The member 15 has the:

In the form of clamp shown at the right of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 3, the. parts a, d and f are substantially the same as the corresponding parts a, d and f in the clamp on the other side of the rail. And the member o is similar to member Z) except for the fact that the member Z) is provided with a single notch or recess 9'' which is located near the middle of the bottom of said member and receives the head of the spike or treenail 72 The manner in which the clamps shown in Figs. 1 to 3 are applied w ll be obvious. In the form of construction according to Figs. t and 5 both the upper part a and also the lower part b of the clamping device are wedge-shaped, and the clamping device is used in the following way :The wedge-shaped lower part 5 of the clamping device isplaced, as in the forms of construe tion previously described, with its notches 9 ,9 on? the means for fastening the rails such'as spikes or treenails h if, and with its lower part on the rail footaud then the up per parta oithe clamping device is driven in laterally by means of a hammer, whereupon the relative position; of. both .parts is fixed by a "securing pin. whichiis passed through them. By the kicking or jamming set up in this Way between the rail and the meanscfor securing the rail, full security is afi'orded against t-heshi-Eting or creeping of the rails and, as-experiencehas shown, four clamping devices only are sufiicien-t for a rail ten meters in length, to prevent entirely shifting of the rail.
