To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,W1LL1AM H. MUzzr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State 5 of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adding-Machines, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in calculating vor similar machines, and more particularly to the recording mechanism for same.v
The principal object of this invention is to provideadjustable type carriers which may bemoved laterally so as to enable the printing of items in different vertical columns.
Another object is to provide a mechanisml so that a part of the t pe carriers may be independently adjusted: thereby enabling the listing of several items at a single opera- -tion of the machine. l
Another object is to provide mechanism for disabling the transfer between sections of the registering mechanism whenever the l type carriers are separated.

Described in general terms the machine comprises a Iplurality of banks of keys which determlne t e amount to be registered and recorded by the actuation of a main operating lever. Thc type carriers of the recording mechanism may be laterall shifted without disengaging them from their driving mechanism, so as to print in different columns upon a record sheet supported adjacent to said type carriers. The type carriers are arranged so as to be moved as a whole to enable the printing 1n columns at successive operations of the machine or in sections to allow the rinting of se arate columns during a single operation. 7henever the recording mechanism is split in sections, the transfer between the corresponding section of the registering mechanism is disabled.
Amount determining devices- These devices comprise a plurality of banks of numerical keys 1, which, when depressed, act as stops forv longitudinally movable bars 2, which are released upon the operation of the main o erating lever 3, and are drawn forwardly y springs 4 connected at their ends to lugs 2 projecting downwardly from bars 2, and to a suitable part of a casing 5 of the machine. The Shanks 6 of the keys 1 are provided with cam slots 7, which ter minate at their lower ends in horizontal slots 8. When the keys are depressed, the cam slots will engage with laterali projecting lugs 9, formed upon slides 10, one for each bank of keys), and move the same forwardly. At its forward end each slide 1() has pivoted thereto a latching pawl 11, which, as the slide moves forwardly, engages with a cross rod 12, and thereby latches the operated keys of each bank in their depressed position and the inoperated keys in their elevated position by the lugs 9 formed upon the slides 10,

The main operating lever 3 is secured to. an outer end of a shaft 20, which has projecting upwardly therefrom an arm 21 (see Fig. 8), that is connected by a link 22 to a downwardly extendin arm 23, secured at its upper end to a orizonta-l shaft 24. Rigidly mounted upon the shaft 24 are two arms 25, provided with cam ooves 26, in which play rollers 27 exten ing laterally from arms 28 ivoted to brackets-29 secured to the rear en of the casing 5. The lower end of each arm 28 has pivoted thereto a forwardly extending link 30 (see Figs'. 5 and 8), which, at its forward end, is connected to an ear3l projecting rearwardly from the cross bar 18.
1t will be seen from the above description that when the operating handle 3 is pulled forward, the arm 21 will move in the same direction, and, by means of the link 22 and the arm 23, rock the shaft 24 downwardly and forwardly. The cams 25 secured to the shaft 24 willrock in a similar direction, and move the transverse bar 18 forward through means of the levers 28 and links 30. The shaft 2O has centrally pivoted arms 2O*1 to the ends of which are suitably secured the ends of coil springs 21a and 22, which are putl under tension by the forward movement of the operating lever. 3, and which' are used to return the parts to normal position. A suitable dash pot may be used to retard a too rapid movement ofthe parts to normal position. 'i
Recording mechanism/. Attached to the bars 2 (see Figs. 1, 3 and 5) are upwardly extending arms 32', which have attached to their upper ends rack bars 33, which engage with pinions 34 upon opposite sides of casing 5. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the four right hand arms 32 'extend diagonally through openings 35 in the right hand frame of the casing 5, while the five remaining arms ex'- tend through similar openings upon the left Ahand side of the casing. The rack bars 33 carried by the four .right hand arms 32 mesh with the pinions secured to the four aosavss uppermost shafts 36, whilethe, rack bars 33 I' located on the left hand side of the machine mesh with the pinions 34 secured to the lower five shafts 36. These shafts 36 are mounted in an arc of a circle struck from the center of a. rotary shaft 37 suitably mounted in the casing 5.
4 Pinions 38 are mounted upon the shafts 35 I which act as guides for type blocks 44. These blocks are provided with pins 45 y which limit the`inward movement of said blocks b contacting with the inner rib 43 and are eld in this positionl by c oil springs 46 which surround the stems 47 of the type Ablocks 44 'and abut against the pins 45-and the outer rib 43. Each carrier 42 is pro-- vided with ten type-blocks 44 with a zero type normally in rinting position. I
It will be seen rom the above description that as the parts move forward, they -will carry the arms 32 and the rack bars 33 with them and rotate the shafts 36 ,through means of the pinions 34 a corresponding-l distancegthev shafts 36,- in turn, rotating the type carriers 42, so as to bring the proper type blocks 44 into printing position through means of the pinions 38 carried by the shafts 36. The mechanism for taking an impres' sion from the positioned type blocks will now be described.
Extending downwardly from the shaft 20, to which the operating lever 3 is secured, is an arm 48 which has secured to its lower end one end of a link 49, the` other end of the latter being secured to the downward end of a lever 50, which is approximately centrally pivoted upon the casing 5 at 51', as shown in Fig. 1. The upper end of the lever 50-is formed into a segmental rack plate 52 which meshes with a pinion 53 loosely mounted upon the shaft 37 This pinion is provided with a collar'54 having two teeth 55 diametrically opposite each other (see Fig. 2), which are normally heldin notches 56 formed upon a collar 57, secured to the shaft 37, by a coil spring 58 interposed be-v tween said pinion 53 and a collar 59 secured to the outer end of the shaft 37. As the operating lever 3 is pulled forward, the seg- 'mental rack plate 52 of the lever 50 will also be rocked forward through means of the link 49, thereby rotating the pinion 53 and collar 54 in the direction of the arrow (Figs.
l and 2), and by means of the teeth 55, formed on said collar 54, rotatin the shaft 37. As the operating lever 8 an the lever are returned to `normal position, the teeth will be cammed out of the notches 56 in the collar 57 and rotate independentlyofA the shaft 37. As it reaches its normal position, the teeth 55 of the collar 54 will be forced back into engagement with the notches 56 by the coil spring 58.
The shaft 37, as shown in Fig. 9,is provided with a longitudinal groove 60, into which enters lines 61 of cams 62 mounted upon the shaft 37, which construction allows the cams 4to be moved laterally independently of the shaft 37, but compels the rotation of said cams with thev shaft. Contacting with the periphery of the cams 62, are the ends of upwardly extending arms 63, which form one part of a printing hammer for each type carrier 42. Each arm 63 is loosely mounted at its lower. end upon a horizontal shaft 64 rigidly-secured within the casing 5. Adjacent to each arm 63 is an upwardly extending arm 65, which is slightly bent so that its upper end will be in position to contact with the stem 47 of the type block 44 that is in position to print. The arms 63 and 65 of each hammer are provided with collars which have a recess 66 (see Fi s. 9 and 1l), which permit of a slight in ependent movement of the arms 65, so as to allow the latter to strike the stem 47 of the type block when the arm 63v is suddenly arrested. This lost motion between said arms 63 and 65 is normally taken up by a light coil spring 67. The upper end of each arm 63' is held in contact with its respective cam 62 by a coil spring 68,
lthe ends of which are secured to the arm 63 and a collar suitably mounted upon the shaft 37.
It will be seen from the above description that as the operating lever 3 is pulled forward, the type blocks 44 mounted upon the type carriers 42 will take up positions corresponding to the keys depressed, and as said lever 3 completes its forward movement, the shaft 37, carrying the cams 62, will have made a complete revolution, allowing the-arms 63 to spring rearwardly until they will be suddenly arrested by the upper ends of said arms contacting with the low portion of the cams 62. This sudden arresting of the arms 63 will allowA the arms v9), is arranged to be fed forward one space iupon each operation of the machine by the 65, through the recesses 66 to continue their rearward movements and force the positionedtype blocks 44 to take an impression upon v a record sheet 69 supported by a platen roller 70, through an intervening ribbon 71.
Eachpinion 38, mounted upon theshafts 36, is provided with a collar 72 that has an annular groove 73, into which plays prongs 74 of a bifurcated portion of an arm 75,
which is looselyimonted at its inner end upon the shaft 37. Loosely mounted u u,
the shaft 37 within the casing 5 and' u] 1 1 the outside of the ty carriers 4-2, are bell cranks 76, one of which is also mounted between the fifth and slxth type carrier counting from the richt (see Fig. 5). 'lhc ends of the horizonta arms of the bell cranks 76 are provided with handles 77, which have upwardly and downwardly extending arms I7 8 and 79 respectively, (see Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 9), the upwardly extending arms playing over an index 8O lformed upon the casing 5, while the downwardly extending arms 79 are provided with plunger pins 8 1 which engage in notches 82 to insure the proper alinement of the levers 76, and also to prevent accidental displacement thereof. The two end levers 76 are used for the displacement of all of the type carriers 42, while the central lever 76 is used to displace only a part of said type carriers, so that a plurality of items may be entered in separate columns and readily distinguished upon the record sheet69. A downwardly extending 90 arm of each of the bell cranlt levers 76 is guided by the horizontal rod 64.
It will be seen from the above that when all or part of the type carriers 42 are shifted laterally by the bell crank levers 76, their companion pinions 78 and printing hammers will be carried therewith. The downwardly extending arms of the two outer bell crank levers 7 6 extend slightly below the horizontal shaft 64, and have fastened thereto plates 83 extending toward each other (see Figs. 5 and 6). When thet-ype carriers are assembled so as to print as a whole, the plates 83 abut against each other, and an arm 84 carried by the left hand plate 83 (see Fig. 6),l is cammed upwardly and held in this position by a pin 84a against the tension of a coil spring 85, as shown in said ligure. Whenever the t-ype carriers are separated (as shown in Fig. 5) to print several items during a single operation of the niachine, the arm 84 carried by the plate 83 will be rocked downwardly by its spring 85 and disable the transfer mechanism between the fifth and sixth wheels of the register mechanism, as hereinafter described. The downward movement of the arm 84 is limited by a pin 86, around which the coil :spring is wound.
The record sheet 69 (see Figs. 2, 3 and following described mechanism- Forming a part of the collar 59, secured to the outer 4end of shaft 37, is a cam disk 87, which ensecured to the shaft and is arranged to said frame in front of the platen roller 70 'pao 4be fed forward Asta by step by apawl 92 carried by the plate` 9,;which is moved rear- Wardlyupon each rotation ofthe shaft 37 by the cam disk-,.87 engaging with the pin 88. `This plate 89''is returned to normal position by a light'coil spring 93. On the opposite side ofthe plate 39 from the pawl 92, is mounted a similar' pawl 94 which engages with a ratchet wheel 95 attached to a spool 96 around which the inkinv' ribbon 71 1s wound. This spool 96 isvhed in its adjusted position by leaf spring 97, one end of which 1s secured to oneof the side frames ofthe casing 5, while its other end abuts against the side of the ribbon spool, which is loosely mounted upon the shaft 90 and t-hereby frictionally holds ,said spool 96 in its adjusted position. The inking ribbon 71 passes from the spool 96 around a pin 98 extendingxhfrom one ofl the' side frames of the casing 5, and passes through a recess in the other end of said ribbon being wound around a similar spool 96 located upon the opposite side of the machine. The latter spool is not provided with a ratchet wheel, but is frictionally held in place by a spring similar to the spring 97. Feed rollers (see Fig. 9), 99, y100 and 101 are located about the platen roller andl between them the record sheet 69 is fed.
Registering mcczanem.-'-The registering mechanism herein shown is somewhat similai` to that shown in the patent granted to iF. C. Rinsche, dated February 2, 1904, No.
751,207, and comprises a series of register ing wheels 102, -(see Figs. 3,' 5 and 7), which are loosely mounted upon a. horizontal shaft 103, suitably supported in the register' casing. These wheels are provided with pinions 104, which are constantly in mesh with gear wheels 105 loosely mounted upon a horizontal shaft 106. The longitudinal movable bars 2 are provided with upwardly extending projections 107 to which are pivoted the forward ends of rack bars 108, which are arranged to move forwardly with said bars 2 and, at the end of their forward movement, to be thrown into engagement with the gear wheels 105, so that as the said bars 2 are returned to norma-l position by the horizontal bar 18 abutting against the downward projections 2a, they will turn the wheels 102 through means of the intermediate gear wheels 105 a distance correspending to the forward movement of said bars 2. These rack bars/108 are thrown into engagement with the `gears 105 at the eX- treme end of the forward movement of the operating handle 3, at which time the bars 2 have taken up their proper position by the following means. rllhe rock shaft 24 which is connected to the main rock shaft 20 by the previously described intervening mechanism (see Fig. 8), has fastened to it a down wardly extending arm 109, which carries at its lower end a roller 110, which at the end of the rocking movement of the shaft 24, contacts with the upper end of an upwardly extending arm 111 that is pivoted to a bracket 112 extending upwardly from the base of the machine, and rocks said arm 111 about its pivot. The upper end of the Harm 111 is connected to` the rearward end of a link 113, the forward end of which is connected to a lever 114, which at its lower end is fast to one end of a horizontal shaft 115, the latter being mounted in brackets 1 16 secured to the base of the machine. At the other end of the shaft .115 is secured a similar lever 114, which lis partially broken away in Fig. 8.
The upper end of the left hand lever 114 is provided with a segmental cam slot 117, while the right hand lever is only provided with a camming surface similar to the bottom of the slot 117 the purpose of which is to allow for the convenient assembling of the parts. Projecting into the slot 117 and resting upon the camming surface' of the pins 118, which extend laterally from for-y wardly projecting arms 119 mounted upon a horizontal shaft 120, the latter being suitably mounted in the side frames of the casing 5. Connecting the forward ends of the arms 119 is a transverse rod 121, which plays in 'longitudinal slots 122 in the rearward ends ofthe rack bars 108.
1t will be seen-from the above description that at the extreme end of the forward movement ofthe operating handle 3, the roller 110 mounted upon the lower end of arm 109, secured to the rock shaft 24, will contact with the upper end of the arm 111 and by mea-ns of the link 113, rock` the levers 114 forward, which movement will carry the rack bars 108 into engagement with the gear wheels 105 through means of the cam slot 117 and the camming surface of the levers 114 engaging with tthe pins 118, extending from the arms 119. At the eX- treme rearward movement of the operating handle 3, the arm 109, which moves in the contact with the upper end o-f an arm 123 suitably mounted at its lower end to a part of the casing 5v (see Fig. 8), and by means of a link 124, connecting the upper ends of the arms 123 and 111, rock the cam levers 114 rearwardly, and bythe previously described intervening mechanism withdraw the racks 108 out of engagement with the gear wheels 105.
Transfer mec7L`mz'sm.-By reference to Fig. 7, it will be seen that the pinions V104, which are in mesh with the gears 105, are only one-third of the size of the latter, so that upon a third of a revolution of the `gears 105, which is equivalent to a full revoright hand lever 114 (see Figs. 3 and 5) are same direction, will carry the roller 110 into lution of the registering wheels 102 and the pinions 104, the following described transfer mechanism will be set to add one upon the wheels 102 of the next higher denomination. Extending la-terally from each of the gear wheels 105 are three pins 125, thus, as said wheel makes a third 0f a revolution, one of said pins 125 will contact with a nose 126 formed upon a lever 127 and elevate said lever slightly against the tension of its spring 128 so that a pin 129 projecting laterally from each of the levers 127 will raise a latching pawl 130 against the tension of its spring 131, the other end of the spring being connected to a rearwardly extending arm of a bell crank pawl 132, so that the vertical arm of said bell crank pawl 132 will pass under its latching pawl 130 and hold said pawl elevated while the lever 127 is returned to normal position. Each of the levers 127 and its companion pawl 130 are mounted upon a shaft 133 suitably mounted within the registering frame.`
Each of the bell crank pawls 132 is mounted upon a. lever 134 which in turn is pivotally mounted upon a transverse shaft 135, the latter being mounted in the register frame. The movements of the pawls 132 are limited by pins 136 extending from the levers 134 into enlarged recesses in said awls. Each of the levers 134 is provided with a transfer pawl 137 which engages teeth of the gear wheel 105 of the next higher denomination than that wit-h which the lever 127 engages.
Springs 138, the ends of which are connected to pins 139 projecting from the levers/134 and to fingers stamped from a sleeve 140 suitably mounted in the registering frame, pull the levers 134 forward to effect the transfer. The levers 134 are normally held in check by the bell crank pawls 132 engaging with the latching levers 130 and said levers are moved slightly rearward by mechanism hereinafter described, before the gear Wheels 105 have started to rotate. On the left hand end of rock shaft 24 (see Fig. 8), is a segmental plate 141 provided with a cam slot 142 into which projects a pin 143 mounted in one end of a triangular shaped plate 144 which is pivoted at 145 upon the casing 5. Attached at 146 to the plate 144 is one end of a link 147the forward end of which is connected to a lever 148 (see Fig. 7 which has a laterally extending rod 149 connected at its other end toa lever somewhat similar to lever 148, these levers 148 being mounted upon the shaft 135.
Upon the rocking of the shaft 24 by the operating lever 3, the segmental cam plate 141 will rock the triangular-shaped plate 144 rearwardly, drawing the frame comprising the levers 148 and rod 149 rearwardly also by means of the link 147, thereby recocking `forward by their sprin any' of the transfer levers 134 that have been previously tripped, all of which is done before the registration is commenced. The levers 134 are drawn farther rearlwardly by rod- 149 than the position show in Fig. 7 in which position they are held by fingers 150 projecting rearwardly from the sleeve 140 that are drawn into engagement with shoulders 151 formed upon the levers 134 by the springs 138. As the parts are returned to normal position a roller 152 carriedy by the upper end of the left hand lever 148 contacts with a finger 153, extending upwardly from the sleeve 140, and rocks the rearwardly extending fingers 150 of said sleeve out of engagement with the shoulders 151, and thereby allow any of the levers 134, whose companion latching pawls 130 have been previously tripped to be drawn s 138 to effect the transfer, all of whichis fully shown and described in the aforesaid patent to Rinsche. y
Whenever it is desired to list a plurality of items during a single operation of the machine,the type carriers 42 are separated by the central bell crank lever 76, as previously described. When this is done it is also desirable to split the registering mechanism in sections, so as to accumulate separately the totals of the different groups of items listed. The splitting of the registering mechanism is accomplished by the cutting out of the transfer between the several sections, which is done in the following manner.
As the t-ype carriers 42 are separated by the center bell crank 76, the plates 83 connected to the downwardly extending arms of the outer bell crank 76 are vseparated which allows the arm 84, Icarried by the left hand plate 83, to be rocked downwardly by its spring 85, carrying a foot 154 projecting from the arm 84, into contact with a transverse rod 155 supported by the rear ends of two arms 156 located upon opposite .sides of the machine, the forward ends of which are secured to a shaft 157 mounted in the casing 5, and rock said shaft 157 and arms 156 rearwardly and downwardly against `the tension of a coil spring 158, which keeps the rod 155 into contact with the foot 154 of the arm 84 (see Figs. 3, 7 and 9). lt will be seen that the machine shown has several possible modes of o-peration. llt may be used as a single column adding machine, printing on the long narrow strip Zonovv in common use. llt may also be used as a Wide carriage machine, printing in any one of several lateral columns on a Wide sheet of paper, serving thereby for many useful kinds of tabulation. Lastly it may be used as a so-called split and normal machine, printing and adding at once tvvo separate columns, Which columns may be adjacent ormay be variably separated by any desired lvvidth of space Within the limits of the machine. These various modes of operation enable the' machine to perform functions and to achieve results entirely outside the scope of the single column machines now on the market. For instance, it is believed to be broadly novel to provide a construction in a split and normal machine permitting a variable separation through any desired Width of space of the printed columns, and this function is of 40 evident utility. The self contained printing device may also be noted as a distinct improvementin the art, especially in connection with the lateral adjustment of the printing elements. lf the variable separaa5 tion above referred to -Was desired in the prior machines, much .difficulty would be experienced in shifting the hammers on account of the great space they occupy,
which space would clearly have to be left 5o vacant of other mechanism to permit such shifting. 1With the self contained structure this objection does not arise.
`While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to 'fulfil the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to coniine the invention to the one form of embodiment herein disclosedvfor it is susceptible of means for adjusting the type carriers indenosas/ea pendent of movement `ef, their` operating mechanism, and relative to a record strip so as to print thereon in different columns,
